Book Synopsis Best Practice Guidelines for the Prevention and Mitigation of Conflict Between Humans and Great Apes by : Kimberley Hockings
Download or read book Best Practice Guidelines for the Prevention and Mitigation of Conflict Between Humans and Great Apes written by Kimberley Hockings and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2009 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Executive summary: One of the challenges facing great ape conservation is the rising level of interaction between humans and great apes, and the resulting conflicts that emerge. As human populations continue to grow and human development makes deeper incursions into forest habitats, such conflicts will become more widespread and prevalent in the natural ranges of great apes, especially considering that the majority of great apes live outside protected areas. It is essential that we develop a comprehensive understanding of existing and potential conflict situations, and their current or future impacts on both great apes and humans. This will require the integration of quantitative and qualitative data on multiple aspects of human and great ape behaviour and ecology, along with a good understanding of local people's perceptions of the situation. Such knowledge can then be used to develop effective, locally-adapted, management strategies to prevent or mitigate human-great ape conflicts, whilst respecting both conservation objectives and socio-cultural-economic contexts. These guidelines outline a sequence of logical steps that should be considered prior to any form of human-great ape conflict intervention, and propose possible counter-measures to be used in the management of human-great ape conflicts.

Book Synopsis Project Appraisal and Valuation of the Environment by : P. Abelson
Download or read book Project Appraisal and Valuation of the Environment written by P. Abelson and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-06-12 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The book is a pioneering attempt to see exactly what difference economic valuation of environmental effects would have made to six actual, on-going, development projects, if it had been done at the time of appraisal. It combines theoretical rigour with applied economic skills, presented with robust common sense.' - James Winpenny, Overseas Development Institute This book is a practical and readable guide to valuing the environment and the implications for public investment and policy, useful for students as well as professional economists, policy-makers, engineers, environmental and social planners. It describes how the environment can be valued and how these valuation concepts can be applied to investment decisions. The book provides first a general introduction to the key issues and concepts, considering the nature and magnitude of environmental problems, the cost-benefit method of evaluation and detailed methods for valuing the environment. It then analyses in detail six case-studies, based on actual or proposed major investment projects by the UK Overseas Development Administration or the World Bank. These include water quality in China, the supply of electricity in Bangladesh, slum improvements in India, mass transit in Nigeria, forest conservation in Kenya and soil quality in Bolivia. Thus the book is expected to be of special interest to professionals and students in developing countries, although much of the material has general application in developed as well as in developing countries.
