Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After about 1300, most schools in the Netherlands came under secular rule. It managed to create good and accessible schools, causing a hey-day for education in the 14th, 15th and 16th century. As a result, more than half of the children participated in basic instruction and literacy rate went relatively high. A contemporary Italian visitor noted with awe that 'in the Low Countries everybody could read and write, even the peasants'. In the 16th century, the curriculum changed because of the Reformation and the availability of printed texts. In this book, the favourable situation in the Netherlands is compared with the rest of Western Europe. Medieval and Renaissance schools have been studied before, but never from the perspective of those who experienced it on a daily basis. Recent excavations on the sites of late-medieval schools and boarding houses revealed the objects used by pupils and teachers for reading, writing, mathematics, and school life in general. Combining those finds with texts and hundreds of depictions of school scenes in manuscripts, frescoes, sculpture, stained glass and early prints, the practice of education could be reconstructed. The book gives a detailed overview of the material school culture, allowing a rare glimpse into a late-medieval classroom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Failing schools. Underprivileged schools. Just plain bad schools.” That’s how Eve L. Ewing opens Ghosts in the Schoolyard: describing Chicago Public Schools from the outside. The way politicians and pundits and parents of kids who attend other schools talk about them, with a mix of pity and contempt. But Ewing knows Chicago Public Schools from the inside: as a student, then a teacher, and now a scholar who studies them. And that perspective has shown her that public schools are not buildings full of failures—they’re an integral part of their neighborhoods, at the heart of their communities, storehouses of history and memory that bring people together. Never was that role more apparent than in 2013 when Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced an unprecedented wave of school closings. Pitched simultaneously as a solution to a budget problem, a response to declining enrollments, and a chance to purge bad schools that were dragging down the whole system, the plan was met with a roar of protest from parents, students, and teachers. But if these schools were so bad, why did people care so much about keeping them open, to the point that some would even go on a hunger strike? Ewing’s answer begins with a story of systemic racism, inequality, bad faith, and distrust that stretches deep into Chicago history. Rooting her exploration in the historic African American neighborhood of Bronzeville, Ewing reveals that this issue is about much more than just schools. Black communities see the closing of their schools—schools that are certainly less than perfect but that are theirs—as one more in a long line of racist policies. The fight to keep them open is yet another front in the ongoing struggle of black people in America to build successful lives and achieve true self-determination.

The nearby tree suddenly dumped the snow from its branches, sending up a cloud of powdery white. The chilling load plopped onto the back of Ben, who stood beneath. With a startled yelp, the red-and-white patched border collie shot forward, directly underneath Snowstorm. Chaos ensued. Whinnying shrilly, Snowstorm lurched backward. Instinctively, Josephine dodged sideways right to the ridge's edge to avoid a collision, and one of her groping hooves found nothing but thin air behind. Slipping on the wet rocks, the mare lunged forward. She succeeded in regaining her footing, but not before the sudden, jolting movements dislodged Father's one-handed grip on her mane. Clawing desperately for a handhold, Father tumbled from Josephine's back and disappeared over the edge of the ridge. Following five peaceful years, foreclosure threatens the Whitlock family's farm. After Father's accident, Nathanael and William take upon themselves the responsibility of coming up with a solution. Their ideas, however, are continually thwarted by an unseen opponent, and a ferocious predator threatens the farm throughout the duration of the thirty-day trial.
