Book excerpt: Much as she loves her Key West birthplace, Everly Meyers dreams of living in New York City. Everything about the Big Apple appeals to her: the lights, the history, the glamour, and most recently, the presence of Drew Wallace. Everly meets Drew when he comes to the Keys to celebrate his sister's wedding. She gladly offers to play tour guide to the handsome New York journalist, and by the end of his short visit, she's absolutely smitten. She's also disappointed. Drew has a special someone waiting for him back home. Romance isn't an option, but Drew proves to be a loyal friend when Everly moves to the city-a little too loyal, in the opinion of his girlfriend, Peyton. Much as Everly loves being in the city of her dreams, she quickly runs into difficulties. She struggles to find an apartment, develops a crush on Drew's roommate, and quickly makes an enemy of a chauvinistic coworker. Life in New York is more complicated than Everly would like, leaving her dazed, but she's not ready to pack it in just yet. But she wonders if moving to her dream city might have been a mistake. As for Drew, well, he has his own ideas-ideas Everly might find surprising.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current crisis in policing can be traced to failures of reform. “Sparrow surely is right to condemn policing directed only at crime rates rather than community satisfaction.” –The New York Times Book Review In the past two years, America has witnessed incendiary milestones in the poor relations between police and the African-American community: Ferguson, Baltimore, and more recently Baton Rouge, St. Paul, and Dallas. Malcolm Sparrow, who teaches at Harvard Kennedy School of Government and is a former British police detective, argues that other factors in the development of police theory and practice over the last twenty-five years have also played a major role in contributing to these tragedies and to a great many other cases involving excessive police force and community alienation. Sparrow shows how the core ideas of community and problem-solving policing have failed to thrive. In many police departments these foundational ideas have been reduced to mere rhetoric. The result is heavy reliance on narrow quantitative metrics, where police define how well they are doing by tallying up traffic stops, or arrests made for petty crimes. Sparrow's analysis shows what it will take for police departments to escape their narrow focus and perverse metrics and turn back to making public safety and public cooperation their primary goals. Police, according to Sparrow, are in the risk-control business and need to grasp the fundamental nature of that challenge and develop a much more sophisticated understanding of its implications for mission, methods, measurement, partnerships, and analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a river of light, pure intelligence and love within each of us. When the river flows in its fullness, unimpeded from head to toe, we feel successful, happy, fulfilled and awake to our true nature as eternal, timeless beings. Unfortunately, often the river is merely a trickle. Returning to Oneness reveals the limitations that restrict the flow of light in the body and mind and shows us how to awaken more permanently to our full potential by using a series of simple keys, which are based in the ancient teachings of non-duality.Presented here in a clear, easy, user-friendly form, the Seven Keys (now Eight) offer a path out of our confusion and angst. Never before have the teachings of love, wisdom and unity consciousness been so greatly needed as they are now, as tools for navigating these extraordinary times of rapid, accelerating change. As revealed in this much-anticipated third edition, Earth and humanity are opening to new levels of spiritual power and awareness. We are experiencing a complex re-working of our old energy system into a dramatically new one that allows the physical body to tap fully into its vast multidimensionality. This radical overhaul of the body's subtle-physical anatomy heralds the emergence of both a completely new, integrated human being and a whole new planetary energy system. By activating and developing our direct connection to Source, we can not only survive but thrive amidst the challenges of today, including the assaults of our increasingly stressful, chaotic and toxic environment. This book contains many practical exercises, prayers and meditations to help us reach new, ascended states of consciousness-and live healthy, productive and fulfilling lives.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • This is the ultimate Jimmy Buffett philosophy on life and how to live it, “like sitting with Buffett at a beachside bar, listening to him spin tales” (Time). “Buffett took his family on a three-week trek around the Caribbean. . . . His colorful travelogue is interspersed with memoirs of his youth and music career—both of which revolve around his continuing search for the perfect fishing spot.”—USA Today For Parrotheads, armchair adventurers, and anyone who appreciates a good yarn and a hearty laugh, here is the ultimate backstage pass. You’ll read the kind of stories Jimmy usually reserves for his closest friends and you'll see a wonderful, wacky life through the eyes of the man who's lived it. Jimmy takes us from the legendary pirate coves of the Florida Keys to the ruins of ancient Cartegena. Along the way, we hear a tale or two of how he got his start in New Orleans, how he discovered his passion for flying planes, and how he almost died in a watery crash in Nantucket harbor. We follow Jimmy to jungle outposts in Costa Rica and on a meandering trip down the Amazon, through hair-raising negotiations with gun-toting customs officials and a three-year-old aspiring co-pilot. And he is the inimitable Jimmy Buffett through it all.

Book excerpt: “An extraordinary novel . . . a triumph of insight and storytelling.” —Associated Press “A true masterpiece.” —Glennon Doyle, author of Untamed An extraordinary story set in the first century about a woman who finds her voice and her destiny, from the celebrated number one New York Times bestselling author of The Secret Life of Bees and The Invention of Wings In her mesmerizing fourth work of fiction, Sue Monk Kidd takes an audacious approach to history and brings her acclaimed narrative gifts to imagine the story of a young woman named Ana. Raised in a wealthy family with ties to the ruler of Galilee, she is rebellious and ambitious, with a brilliant mind and a daring spirit. She engages in furtive scholarly pursuits and writes narratives about neglected and silenced women. Ana is expected to marry an older widower, a prospect that horrifies her. An encounter with eighteen-year-old Jesus changes everything. Their marriage evolves with love and conflict, humor and pathos in Nazareth, where Ana makes a home with Jesus, his brothers, and their mother, Mary. Ana's pent-up longings intensify amid the turbulent resistance to Rome's occupation of Israel, partially led by her brother, Judas. She is sustained by her fearless aunt Yaltha, who harbors a compelling secret. When Ana commits a brazen act that puts her in peril, she flees to Alexandria, where startling revelations and greater dangers unfold, and she finds refuge in unexpected surroundings. Ana determines her fate during a stunning convergence of events considered among the most impactful in human history. Grounded in meticulous research and written with a reverential approach to Jesus's life that focuses on his humanity, The Book of Longings is an inspiring, unforgettable account of one woman's bold struggle to realize the passion and potential inside her, while living in a time, place and culture devised to silence her. It is a triumph of storytelling both timely and timeless, from a masterful writer at the height of her powers.
