Book Synopsis Axiomatics of Classical Statistical Mechanics by : Rudolf Kurth
Download or read book Axiomatics of Classical Statistical Mechanics written by Rudolf Kurth and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2019-03-20 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph constructs classical statistical mechanics as a deductive system, based on the equations of motion and the basic postulates of probability. The treatment consists chiefly of theorems and proofs that are expressed in a manner that reveals the theory's logical structure. Requiring only familiarity with the elements of calculus and analytical geometry, Axiomatics of Classical Statistical Mechanics is geared toward advanced undergraduates and graduate students in mathematical physics. An opening chapter on mathematical tools makes the text as self-contained as possible. Subsequent chapters explore the phase flows of mechanical systems, the initial distribution of probability in the phase space, and both time-dependent and time-independent probability distributions. A final chapter covers statistical thermodynamics.

Book Synopsis Statistical Mechanics of Classical and Disordered Systems by : Véronique Gayrard
Download or read book Statistical Mechanics of Classical and Disordered Systems written by Véronique Gayrard and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings of the conference Advances in Statistical Mechanics, held in Marseille, France, August 2018, focus on fundamental issues of equilibrium and non-equilibrium dynamics for classical mechanical systems, as well as on open problems in statistical mechanics related to probability, mathematical physics, computer science, and biology. Statistical mechanics, as envisioned more than a century ago by Boltzmann, Maxwell and Gibbs, has recently undergone stunning twists and developments which have turned this old discipline into one of the most active areas of truly interdisciplinary and cutting-edge research. The contributions to this volume, with their rather unique blend of rigorous mathematics and applications, outline the state-of-the-art of this success story in key subject areas of equilibrium and non-equilibrium classical and quantum statistical mechanics of both disordered and non-disordered systems. Aimed at researchers in the broad field of applied modern probability theory, this book, and in particular the review articles, will also be of interest to graduate students looking for a gentle introduction to active topics of current research.
Book Synopsis Statistical Mechanics by : J. Woods Halley
Download or read book Statistical Mechanics written by J. Woods Halley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-16 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the author's graduate course taught over many years in several physics departments, this 2006 book takes a 'reductionist' view of statistical mechanics, while describing the main ideas and methods underlying its applications. It implicitly assumes that the physics of complex systems as observed is connected to fundamental physical laws represented at the molecular level by Newtonian mechanics or quantum mechanics. Organised into three parts, the first section describes the fundamental principles of equilibrium statistical mechanics. The next section describes applications to phases of increasing density and order: gases, liquids and solids; it also treats phase transitions. The final section deals with dynamics, including a careful account of hydrodynamic theories and linear response theory. This textbook is suitable for a one year graduate course in statistical mechanics for physicists, chemists and chemical engineers. Problems are included following each chapter, with solutions to selected problems provided.

Download or read book Probing the Structure of Quantum Mechanics written by Diederik Aerts and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002-06-11 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade, scientists working in quantum theory have been engaging in promising new fields such as quantum computation and quantum information processing, and have also been reflecting on the possibilities of nonlinear behavior on the quantum level. These are challenging undertakings because (1) they will result in new solutions to important technical and practical problems that were unsolvable by the classical approaches (for example, quantum computers can calculate problems that are intractable if one uses classical computers); and (2) they open up new 'hard' problems of a fundamental nature that touch the foundation of quantum theory itself (for example, the contradiction between locality and nonlinearity and the interpretation of quantum computing as a universal process). In this book, one can distinguish two main streams of research to approach the just-mentioned problem field: (1) a theoretical structural part, which concentrates on the elaboration of a nonlinear quantum mechanics and the fundamentals of quantum computation; and (2) a theoretical experimental part, which focuses on the theoretical aspects of applications that arise from new technology and novel research perspectives such as quantum optics and quantum cryptography. Particular attention is also paid to the measurement problem, the classical limit and alternative interpretations (such as the hidden measurement approach). Download or read book Statistical Physics I written by M. Toda and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume of Statistical Physics is an introduction to the theories of equilibrium statistical mechanics, whereas the second volume (Springer Ser. Solid-State Sci., Vol. 31) is devoted to non equilibrium theories. Particular emphasis is placed on fundamental principles and basic con cepts and ideas. We start with physical examples of probability and kinetics, and then describe the general principles of statistical mechanics, with appli cations to quantum statistics, imperfect gases, electrolytes, and phase tran sitions, including critical phenomena. Finally, ergodic problems, the me chanical basis of statistical mechanics, are presented. The original text was written in Japanese as a volume of the Iwanami Series in Fundamental Physics, supervised by Professor H. Yukawa. The first edition was published in 1973 and the second in 1978. The English edition has been divided into two volumes at the request of the publisher, and the chapter on ergodic problems, which was at the end of the original book, is included here as Chapter 5. Chapters 1,2,3 and part of Chapter 4 were written by M. Toda, and Chapters 4 and 5 by N. Saito. More extensive references have been added for further reading, and some parts of the final chapters have been revised to bring the text up to date. It is a pleasure to express my gratitude to Professor P. Fulde for his detailed improvements in the manuscript, and to Dr. H. Lotsch of Springer Verlag for his continued cooperation.

Book excerpt: Sets: Naïve, Axiomatic and Applied is a basic compendium on naïve, axiomatic, and applied set theory and covers topics ranging from Boolean operations to union, intersection, and relative complement as well as the reflection principle, measurable cardinals, and models of set theory. Applications of the axiom of choice are also discussed, along with infinite games and the axiom of determinateness. Comprised of three chapters, this volume begins with an overview of naïve set theory and some important sets and notations. The equality of sets, subsets, and ordered pairs are considered, together with equivalence relations and real numbers. The next chapter is devoted to axiomatic set theory and discusses the axiom of regularity, induction and recursion, and ordinal and cardinal numbers. In the final chapter, applications of set theory are reviewed, paying particular attention to filters, Boolean algebra, and inductive definitions together with trees and the Borel hierarchy. This book is intended for non-logicians, students, and working and teaching mathematicians.

Book Synopsis Philosophy of Physics by : Jeremy Butterfield
Download or read book Philosophy of Physics written by Jeremy Butterfield and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007 with total page 1481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ambition of this volume is twofold: to provide a comprehensive overview of the field and to serve as an indispensable reference work for anyone who wants to work in it. For example, any philosopher who hopes to make a contribution to the topic of the classical-quantum correspondence will have to begin by consulting Klaas Landsman's chapter. The organization of this volume, as well as the choice of topics, is based on the conviction that the important problems in the philosophy of physics arise from studying the foundations of the fundamental theories of physics. It follows that there is no sharp line to be drawn between philosophy of physics and physics itself. Some of the best work in the philosophy of physics is being done by physicists, as witnessed by the fact that several of the contributors to the volume are theoretical physicists: viz., Ellis, Emch, Harvey, Landsman, Rovelli, 't Hooft, the last of whom is a Nobel laureate. Key features - Definitive discussions of the philosophical implications of modern physics - Masterly expositions of the fundamental theories of modern physics - Covers all three main pillars of modern physics: relativity theory, quantum theory, and thermal physics - Covers the new sciences grown from these theories: for example, cosmology from relativity theory; and quantum information and quantum computing, from quantum theory - Contains special Chapters that address crucial topics that arise in several different theories, such as symmetry and determinism - Written by very distinguished theoretical physicists, including a Nobel Laureate, as well as by philosophers - Definitive discussions of the philosophical implications of modern physics - Masterly expositions of the fundamental theories of modern physics - Covers all three main pillars of modern physics: relativity theory, quantum theory, and thermal physics - Covers the new sciences that have grown from these theories: for example, cosmology from relativity theory; and quantum information and quantum computing, from quantum theory - Contains special Chapters that address crucial topics that arise in several different theories, such as symmetry and determinism - Written by very distinguished theoretical physicists, including a Nobel Laureate, as well as by philosophers

Download or read book The Study of Time written by J. T. Fraser and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First Conference of the International Society for the Study of Time was held at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut at Oberwolfach in the Black Forest, Federal Republic of Germany from Sunday, 31 August to Saturday, 6 September, 1969. The origin of this conference and the formation of the Society goes back to a proposal due to J. T. Fraser that was discussed at a conference on "Interdisciplinary Perspectives of Time" held by the New York Academy of Sciences in January, 1966. It was unanimously agreed than that an international society should be formed on an interdisciplinary basis with the object of stimulating interest in all problems concerning 'time and that this object could best be attained by means of conferences held at regular intervals. J. T. Fraser was elected Secretary, S. Watanabe Treasurer, and I was elected President. It was agreed, at my suggestion, that the organization of the first conference of the newly formed Society be left to a committee of these three officers, on the understanding that they would invite authorities on the role of time in the various special sciences and humanities to form an Advisory Board to assist them. One of the main difficulties in seeking support for an interdisciplinary conference is that most foundations confine their interest exclusively either to the sciences or to the humanities.
