Book Synopsis Water Demand Management by : David Butler
Download or read book Water Demand Management written by David Butler and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A common characteristic of water demand in urban areas worldwide is its inexorable rise over many years; continued growth is projected over coming decades. The chief influencing factors are population growth and migration, together with changes in lifestyle, demographic structure and the possible effects of climate change (the detailed implications of climate change are not yet clear, and anyway will depend on global location, but must at least increase the uncertainty in security of supply). This is compounded by rapid development, creeping urbanization and, in some places, rising standards of living. Meeting this increasing demand from existing resources is self-evidently an uphill struggle, particularly in water stressed/scarce regions in the developed and developing world alike. There are typically two potential responses: either "supply-side" (meeting demand with new resources) or "demand-side" (managing consumptive demand itself to postpone or avoid the need to develop new resources). There is considerable pressure from the general public, regulatory agencies, and some governments to minimise the impacts of new supply projects (e.g. building new reservoirs or inter-regional transfer schemes), implying the emphasis should be shifted towards managing water demand by best utilising the water that is already available. Water Demand Management has been prepared by the academic, government and industry network WATERSAVE. The concept of the book is to assemble a comprehensive picture of demand management topics ranging from technical to social and legal aspects, through expert critical literature reviews. The depth and breadth of coverage is a unique contribution to the field and the book will be an invaluable information source for practitioners and researchers, including water utility engineers/planners, environmental regulators, equipment and service providers, and postgraduates. Contents Water consumption trends and demand forecasting techniques The technology, design and utility of rainwater catchment systems Understanding greywater treatment Water conservation products Water conservation and sewerage systems An introduction to life cycle and rebound effects in water systems Developing a strategy for managing losses in water distribution networks Demand management in developing countries Drivers and barriers for water conservation and reuse in the UK The economics of water demand management Legislation and regulation mandating and influencing the efficient use of water in England and Wales Consumer reactions to water conservation policy instruments Decision support tools for water demand management

Book Synopsis Human Resource Management by : David G. Collings
Download or read book Human Resource Management written by David G. Collings and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite over three decades of debate around the nature of human resource management (HRM), its intellectual boundaries and its application in practice, the field continues to be dogged by a number of theoretical and practical limitations. Written by an international team of respected scholars, this updated textbook adopts a critical perspective to examine the core management function of HRM in all its complexity – including its darker sides. Human Resource Management: A Critical Approach opens with a critique of the very concept of HRM, tracing its development over time, and then systematically analyses the context of HRM, practice of HRM and international perspectives on HRM. New chapters commissioned for this second edition look at HRM and the issues of diversity, migration, global supply chains and economic crisis. This textbook is essential reading for advanced and inquisitive students of HRM, and for HRM professionals looking to deepen their understanding of the complexities of their field.
Book Synopsis The Global Challenge by : Paul Evans
Download or read book The Global Challenge written by Paul Evans and published by McGraw-Hill Europe. This book was released on 2011 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through its focus on human resource management and organization, The Global Challenge: International Human Resource Management, provides a broad guide on how to manage the process of internationalization, with a particular focus on the transnational firm. In this edition, authors Evans, Pucik and Björkman discuss the "people implications" of traditional strategies for internationalization and how such strategies get executed through human resource management (HRM). They discuss such important topics as: how to manage expatriates from the parent country; how to go about adapting management practices to circumstances abroad; how to localize management; how to recognize and ultimately avoid obstacles in joint ventures; how to expand across borders through acquisitions; how to respond to the contradictory pressures of the transnational firm, where HRM has a critical role to play in enabling managers to resolve these paradoxes in innovative ways; how global competition is changing the nature of management and organization, even for firms operating in domestic markets. The book draws on practical examples from companies that have experienced the real challenges of international HRM. The authors carefully balance these real business applications with a wide scope of academic research. The issues presented in the first edition of this book have been updated throughout with new information from research and practice.

Book Synopsis Redefining Prosperity by : Isabelle Cassiers
Download or read book Redefining Prosperity written by Isabelle Cassiers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Society today faces a difficult contradiction: we know exactly how the physical limits of our planet are being reached and exactly why we cannot go on as we have before – and yet, collectively, we seem unable to reach crucial decisions for our future in a timely way. This book argues that our definition of prosperity, which we have long assimilated with the idea of material wealth, may be preventing us from imagining a future that meets essential human aspirations without straining our planet to the breaking point. In other words, redefining prosperity is a necessary and urgent task. This book is the fruit of a long debate among 15 scholars from diverse fields who worked together to bring the depth and nuance of their respective fields to questions that affect us all. The result is a rich, transdisciplinary work that illuminates the philosophical and historical origins of our current definition of prosperity; identifies the complex processes that gave rise to the problems we face today; elucidates the ways in which our contemporary environmental, social, nutritional, economic, political, and cultural crises are interconnected; and explores why a half-century of economic growth has neither increased life satisfaction in the West nor vanquished world poverty. Approaching these broad-ranging questions from the specific standpoints of their disciplines, each of the authors offers thoughts for the future, considering possible escape routes and proposing changes to the way we live, behave, and organise society and public action – changes that actually respond, in an equitable way, to our deepest aspirations. Ultimately, in laying the groundwork for a public debate on this subject, this book poses a question to its readers: what is your definition of prosperity, and what can be done to promote it?
