Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 15 summers, Rosalind Scott and her husband went cruising, usually in the company of her mother-in-law Lilian. Invariably Lilian managed to put her own inimitable stamp on the holiday by means of everything from staged accidents, exaggerated bouts of sickness and luggage mix-ups to queue-jumping and run-ins with customs officials. Now Rosalind (or 'Roslin' as Lilian always insisted on calling her) has woven together her memories of those cruises, along with stories of encounters with everything from gypsies and self-appointed aristocrats to dragons and hurricanes.ÿ

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Girl Who Came through Vickery Gate is a true story of a rare romance that travels through a couples love and incredible life beginning from the first moment Dottie Williamson enters the gate at Kings Point Academy and meets Jim Plessinger until her last breath, when she passes through another gate. Jim and Dottie were soul mates and were happily married for almost sixty-one years. Dottie comes to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in New York to meet Jim on a blind date put in motion by a chance meeting of their fathers and attend the Saturday activities consisting of a football game, tea, and dance on October 30, 1948. When Dottie walks through Vickery Gate, Jim is done for. She saw me there, so she came up and put her right hand up and said, Im Dottie. I put my hand out and I held her hand. I looked in her eyes and said to myself, I will never, ever let go of this hand in this world and the next. I was absolutely smitten, just blown away. So much so that on that first date, the skinny young man summoned the nerve to give Dottie a lingering kiss, profess his love, and propose marriage during the last dance. Stunned, she ran. I didnt know where I was, Jim said, spending the next few days in a heartbroken stupor. I had poured out my heart. But then there came a letter from Mount Ida College, where Dottie was studying, to say that she had a wonderful time and would very much like to see him. The poor Jim met Dotties wealthy family and was surprised when she happily drove to his familys flat to meet his parents. Dating right up until Jims graduation from Kings Point, they married nine days after on December 22, 1951. This relationship survives Jim spending a year at sea; becoming a Naval Officer; unemployment; moving; the loss of their first child, Susan; having two other daughters Diane and Sally; and becoming a lawyer at almost forty years old in Connecticut and later on in California. Dottie, who never failed to get a job within an hour, managed to be a doting mother, charming hostess, and eventually a real estate agent. Then that shattering day comes. Dottie dies in Jims arms, leaving this world here on earth from complications of Alzheimers disease.

These examples demonstrate why pronunciation and spelling can be difficult for English learners. English has many words that sound the same -- or almost the same -- but are spelled differently (homophones). There are also words that sound differently and have different meanings but are spelled the same (heteronyms). Collected here are many of these words along with International Pronunciation Alphabet (IPA) pronunciations, definitions and parts of speech. Section I contains more than 1,100 homophone groups, each having two or more words, for a total of more than 2,400 words. Section II contains over 200 heteronyms. The IPA pronunciations are those most likely heard in everyday American speech. Many synonyms are provided with usage examples. Some words are used more often than others -- some you may never need to use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short subject films have a long history in American cinemas. These could be anywhere from 2 to 40 minutes long and were used as a "filler" in a picture show that would include a cartoon, a newsreel, possibly a serial and a short before launching into the feature film. Shorts could tackle any topic of interest: an unusual travelogue, a comedy, musical revues, sports, nature or popular vaudeville acts. With the advent of sound-on-film in the mid-to-late 1920s, makers of earlier silent short subjects began experimenting with the short films, using them as a testing ground for the use of sound in feature movies. After the Second World War, and the rising popularity of television, short subject films became far too expensive to produce and they had mostly disappeared from the screens by the late 1950s. This encyclopedia offers comprehensive listings of American short subject films from the 1920s through the 1950s.

Book excerpt: For decades, Screen World has been the film professional's, as well as the film buff's, favorite and indispensable annual screen resource, full of all the necessary statistics and facts. Now Screen World editor Barry Monush has compiled another comprehensive work for every film lover's library. In the first of two volumes, this book chronicles the careers of every significant film actor, from the earliest silent screen stars – Chaplin, Pickford, Fairbanks – to the mid-1960s, when the old studio and star systems came crashing down. Each listing includes: a brief biography, photos from the famed Screen World archives, with many rare shots; vital statistics; a comprehensive filmography; and an informed, entertaining assessment of each actor's contributions – good or bad! In addition to every major player, Monush includes the legions of unjustly neglected troupers of yesteryear. The result is a rarity: an invaluable reference tool that's as much fun to read as a scandal sheet. It pulsates with all the scandal, glamour, oddity and glory that was the lifeblood of its subjects. Contains over 1 000 photos!

Book excerpt: The official sequel to the 1982 hit film, An Officer and a Gentleman‘s Daughter is a brilliant story of struggle and redemption written by Academy Award–nominated screenwriter, Douglas Day Stewart. Thirty-five years after the events of An Officer and a Gentleman, Zack Mayo finds himself facing a very different kind of struggle. His beloved wife died tragically over a decade ago, his daughter—severely impacted by the death of her mother—disappeared after turning to drugs, and now he is being forced into retirement after a heroic career. Convinced his daughter had died two years ago in a fire, Mayo is shocked when she shows up as a student in the last class he will teach before retirement. Shannon Mayo must accomplish the impossible if she is to pass her father’s class and prove to herself that she has fully conquered her demons. Jet school is an unforgiving gauntlet for student and teacher, and their own personal journey is fraught with guilt, grief, and secrets that must be faced by both father and daughter before it’s too late. It’s up to an old mentor to help them navigate their way forward, allowing a daughter to forgive herself for the past and regain her love of life, and a father to prove to himself that he truly is an officer and a gentleman.

Book excerpt: ATTENTION, CONSERVATIVES Forget everything you think you know about the courts—and arm yourselves with this brand-new, urgently needed battle plan to defeat the Left’s legal assault on America. How to Bring the Reagan Revolution to America's Courts . . . FINALLY With the Harriet Miers fiasco a distant memory and John Roberts and Samuel Alito sitting on the Supreme Court, conservatives can finally stop worrying about the courts, right? Wrong. Dead wrong. America’s courts, legal culture, and law schools remain solidly in the Left’s camp. Decades of liberal legal precedents fill volumes of law tomes. Absent a sweeping change—precisely what bestselling author Mark W. Smith calls for in Disrobed—liberals will ruthlessly exploit their dominant position in the law to continue advancing their radical agenda, as they have for the past seventy years. Smith, a nationally recognized attorney, lays out an aggressive new battle plan to thwart the liberal assault on America by turning the courts into allies of the conservative movement. Be warned, Disrobed is not for the fainthearted. Smith implores conservatives: Toss out practically everything you think you know about courts, judges, and American law—because it’s naive, anachronistic, and self-defeating. Fearlessly challenging the conventional conservative wisdom, Disrobed reveals: • Why conservatives must immediately embrace—not decry—judicial activism • A bold new model for finding strong conservative judges—behold the “Judicial Reagan” • Why litmus tests, so often vilified, represent the only way to pick reliable conservative judges • How to get sitting judges to “evolve” (finally!) to the right • How the Right can sue more to advance the conservative agenda—on guns, taxes, immigration, the right to life, you name it • How conservatives can turn liberals’ favorite court rulings against them • The hard truth that who wins in the courts often depends more on politics and ideology than on the rule of law Smith reminds us that courts, judges, and lawyers need not be enemies of the Right, and can even serve as valuable allies in the war against liberalism. But as his groundbreaking book shows, conservatives must force this change by taking swift action. Disrobed issues a call to arms to all conservatives, revealing that the courts are far too important to be left to the devices of academics, lawyers, and politicians. “Conservatives,” Smith writes, “must accept—and adapt our strategies to—the reality of the modern law, even when the truth is uncomfortable. Otherwise the conservative political agenda and the American way of life will keep getting destroyed—legal case by legal case—in the courts.” Also available as an eBook From the Hardcover edition.
