Book excerpt: On New Year's Eve 1922/23, the (first) Goetheanum--an architectural marvel and the "House of the Word" intended to stand as the fully realized physical, artistic embodiment of Anthroposophy on Earth--was deliberately destroyed by fire. This was an unfathomably heavy blow to Steiner and the entire anthroposophic movement. Afterward, however, he was adamant that not a single lecture or event scheduled to take place at the destroyed Goetheanum should be canceled or postponed. He himself carried on with an even more determined, fiery resolve. The course of lectures in this book began on January 5, 1923, as living testament to that resolve. As truly relevant today as they were in 1923, this volume is an exceptionally urgent, heartfelt articulation of what could be considered Steiner's core message and plea to modern humanity: For the sake of the future, wake up

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rudolf Steiner's perspectives on technology are manifold and prophetic. He not only critiqued the technology of his day, but foretold new forms of technology that would inevitably arise, technologies that would be connected to the makers' very attitudes of soul, either the good or bad within them --in other words, their deepest motivations. How we, as evolving human beings, approach technology and its development will be instrumental in determining how ultimately human evolution will turn out. Our future as human beings and the future of technology are intimately connected." --Gary Lamb Illuminating, compelling, challenging, at times staggering in its breadth, A Road to Sacred Creation is above all the definitive text for gaining a hold on Rudolf Steiner's nuanced perspectives on technology. Charting both an inner and outer course --part pilgrimage toward greater perception and knowledge, part dramatic, unfolding plot line of the future of humans and machines, the metaphoric "road" of the title is exactly where humanity finds itself today, though the exact route and destination are still to be determined. The map is not yet drawn, but here is a beginning. Taken together, the relevant concepts, ideas, and insights of Steiner --deftly brought into sequence and dialogue as the editor has done in this book --reveal how the work to arrive at a more spiritually imbued technological future not only involves all domains and fields of spiritual science and anthroposophic work, but has its origins in the very core of our being, fundamentally entwined with our moral progress toward freedom and selfless love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What Christ Jesus taught is not what is most important, but rather what he has given humanity. His resurrection is the birth of a new faculty within human nature." -- Rudolf Steiner There are many books on sacramental theology --some of which focus on a specific denomination, while others aspire to rigorous academic objectivity. Some also serve as an introduction to a particular branch of Christianity, and Michael Debus's book serves that purpose well. Nevertheless, the author's integration of theological developments through the centuries with a discussion of the evolution of consciousness makes this book unique. He addresses the fact that anyone looking for a new or renewed relationship to Christian religiosity must come to understand the center of religious cognitive consciousness and practical life --the sacraments. Is baptism merely a symbolic act, or is it a reality that affects one's life? Does a final unction affect a person's future stages of destiny? How should we understand the transformation of bread and wine? What spiritual processes are expressed in "rituals"? The Christian Community --working since 1922 as a conscious movement for religious renewal --offers answers to these and other crucial questions. Michael Debus speaks to readers who wish to understand more deeply the spiritual foundations of The Christian Community and its place in theological history and its role in Christianity today. In Sacramental Theology for a Modern and Future World, Michael Debus makes complex topics and concepts accessible to all who wish to understand the background and sacraments of The Christian Community and the Movement for Christian Renewal. This book is a translation of Auferstehungskräfte im Schicksal: Die Sakramente der Christengemeinschaft (Urachhaus, 2011). Book excerpt: The Ku Klux Klan has received much attention for its violent activities, but comparatively little research has been done on its musical legacy. The printed music that still exists is spread throughout the nation in both public and private collections. This work presents, chronologically, the music associated with the Klan from 1867 to 2002, thus enabling readers to sense the arguments and attitudes of the Klan as they developed and changed over time. Because of the relative scarcity of Klan–related music, non–Klan music that mentions the word “Klan” is included. These obscure references help place the Klan in a larger social perspective and are very important in documenting anti–Klan musical reaction. In instances where a song merely mentions the Klan, usually in only one verse or in the chorus, then only that verse containing the Klan reference, plus appropriate context, is included. The catalogue also includes Klan–related music that does not have lyrics, such as marches, waltzes, two-steps, and several Klan–related pieces that were published in Europe. Sheet music was virtually nonexistent after the 1930s, so in order to capture a feeling of Klan–related music today, a limited discography of Klan–related recordings from 1920 to 2002 is also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date, constructive theology hasn’t been viewed or conceptualized as a movement or trend in theology on its own as a whole. Questions arise as to what constructive theology is, where it came from, why it considers itself “constructive,” and why constructive is something different from the ways in which theology has been done in the past. This book traces the overall historical arc of constructive theology, from proto-movement through the present. Inklings of constructive theology emerged well before it began to take any formalized shape. At the same time, an important shift occurred when a group of theologians decided to create the Workgroup on Constructive Theology. Further, even as the workgroup continues to work collectively, producing textbooks, statements, and methodologies concerning theology, many theologians who are not part of the workgroup or may not even know it exists have adopted the moniker of “constructive theologian.” The book also considers the term “constructive” itself, offering possible reasons and historical contexts that led to this distinction being made in contrast to “systematic” theology and its subcategories. Constructive theology speaks to a very specific, historically situated emergence in the academy generally and in theology’s attempts to engage those shifts specifically.

Book excerpt: This “interesting and excited to read” spiritual sequel to The Man in The High Castle focuses on the New Japanese Empire—from an acclaimed author and essayist (io9) Decades ago, Japan won the Second World War. Americans worship their infallible Emperor, and nobody believes that Japan’s conduct in the war was anything but exemplary. Nobody, that is, except the George Washingtons—a shadowy group of rebels fighting for freedom. Their latest subversive tactic is to distribute an illegal video game that asks players to imagine what the world might be like if the United States had won the war instead. Captain Beniko Ishimura’s job is to censor video games, and he’s tasked with getting to the bottom of this disturbing new development. But Ishimura’s hiding something . . . He’s slowly been discovering that the case of the George Washingtons is more complicated than it seems, and the subversive videogame’s origins are even more controversial and dangerous than the censors originally suspected. Part detective story, part brutal alternate history, United States of Japan is a stunning successor to Philip K Dick’s The Man in the High Castle. The articles may be of substantial length, and include critical notices of major books. OSAP is now published twice yearly, in both hardback and paperback. 'The serial Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy (OSAP) is fairly regarded as the leading venue for publication in ancient philosophy. It is where one looks to find the state-of-the-art. That the serial, which presents itself more as an anthology than as a journal, has traditionally allowed space for lengthier studies, has tended only to add to its prestige; it is as if OSAP thus declares that, since it allows as much space as the merits of the subject require, it can be more entirely devoted to the best and most serious scholarship.'
