En AVATARES HISTÓRICOS DEL TORO DE LIDIA vemos cómo el toro pasa de ser simplemente un animal salvaje, a convertirse en un auténtico profesional del espectáculo. Las referencias sobre la evolución del toro de lidia han sido siempre de tipo tangencial y subordinado: se estaba narrando la historia de la Fiesta y se hacía una referencia al toro de un determinado momento histórico. En esta obra, donde todo gira alrededor del toro, la mecánica es la inversa, y a través del toro y sus vicisitudes se irán conociendo las distintas etapas por las que ha atravesado el toreo. Numerosas fotografías cuidadosamente seleccionadas refuerzan los argumentos del autor y complementan una obra que supone la defensa y rehabilitación del toro contemporáneo, tan atacado y tan desprestigiado por todos, y que, sin embargo, es el más bravo de la historia de la Fiesta.

There is of course something to the widespread idea, so memorably put into words by Max Weber, that modernity is characterized by the "progressive disenchantment of the world." Yet what is less often recognized is the fact that a powerful counter-tendency runs alongside this one, an overwhelming urge to fill the vacuum left by departed convictions, and to do so without invoking superseded belief systems. In fact, modernity produces an array of strategies for re-enchantment, each fully compatible with secular rationality. It has to, because God has many "aspects"--or to put it in more secular terms, because traditional religion offers so much in so many domains. From one thinker to the next, the question of just what, in religious enchantment, needs to be replaced in a secular world receives an entirely different answer. Now, for the first time, many of these strategies are laid out in a single volume, with contributions by specialists in literature, history, and philosophy.

Miller shows how African migrants and their political fraternities played a formative role in the history of Cuba. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, no large kingdoms controlled Nigeria and Cameroon's multilingual Cross River basin. Instead, each settlement had its own lodge of the initiation society called Ékpè, or “leopard,” which was the highest indigenous authority. Ékpè lodges ruled local communities while also managing regional and long-distance trade. Cross River Africans, enslaved and forcibly brought to colonial Cuba, reorganized their Ékpè clubs covertly in Havana and Matanzas into a mutual-aid society called Abakuá, which became foundational to Cuba's urban life and music. Miller's extensive fieldwork in Cuba and West Africa documents ritual languages and practices that survived the Middle Passage and evolved into a unifying charter for transplanted slaves and their successors. To gain deeper understanding of the material, Miller underwent Ékpè initiation rites in Nigeria after ten years' collaboration with Abakuá initiates in Cuba and the United States. He argues that Cuban music, art, and even politics rely on complexities of these African-inspired codes of conduct and leadership. Voice of the Leopard is an unprecedented tracing of an African title-society to its Caribbean incarnation, which has deeply influenced Cuba's creative energy and popular consciousness.
