O método que está em evidencia, e também mais utilizado é o do Retorno Social no Investimento (Social Return on Investment - SROI), do qual derivam o Índice de Valor Presente (IVP) e o Índice Benefício Custo (IBC). Quando os recursos são provenientes de doações ou públicos a fundo perdido o método predominante é o IBC. Sendo os recursos provenientes de uma parceria do setor público e privado, é melhor utilizar os dois índices IVP e IBC, sendo os dois índices positivos os projetos são viáveis. Quando o total dos recursos são provenientes de investidores privados o método principal é o IVP.

Neste sentido, surge a Avaliação de Impactos Ambientais com o objetivo de evitar, reduzir, neutralizar ou compensar os efeitos negativos de um produto ou empreendimento sobre o meio ambiente: a fim de conservar os recursos naturais, indispensáveis à sobrevivência humana, num contexto sustentável (econômico, ambiental e social), sendo imprescindível que o empreendimento seja compatível com o meio ambiente. Para tal, existem várias ferramentas que auxiliam neste processo. Baseado nestas premissas, os alunos da disciplina de Avaliação de Impactos Ambientais do curso de Pós-Graduação em Agroecologia e Sustentabilidade do Instituto Federal do Espírito Santo – campus de Alegre, propuseram-se a formular o presente livro, envolvendo as perguntas mais recorrentes.
