Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "The need to transliterate large numbers of historical Arabic documents into machine-readable form has motivated new work on offline recognition of Arabic script. Arabic script presents two challenges: orthography is cursive and letter shape is context sensitive. This dissertation presents two techniques to achieve high word recognition rates: the segmentation-free technique and the segmentation-based technique. The segmentation-free technique treats the word as a whole. The word image is first transformed into a normalised polar image. The two-dimensional Fourier transform is then applied to the polar image. This results in a Fourier spectrum that is invariant to dilation, translation, and rotation. The Fourier spectrum is used to form the word template, or train the word model in the template-based and the multiple hidden Markov model (HMM) recognition systems, respectively. The recognition of an input word image is based on the minimum distance measure from the word templates and the maximum likelihood probability for the word models. The segmentation-based technique uses a single hidden Markov model, which is composed of multiple character-models. The technique implements the analytic approach in which words are segmented into smaller units, not necessarily characters. The word skeleton is decomposed into a number of links in orthographic order, it is then transferred into a sequence of discrete symbols using vector quantisation. The training of each character-model is performed using either: state assignment in the lexicon-driven configuration or the Baum-Welch method in the lexicon-free configuration. The observation sequence of the input word is given to the hidden Markov model and the Viterbi algorithm is applied to provide an ordered list of the candidate recognitions."

Book excerpt: Automatic handwriting recognition is the process of converting online and offline letters or words as a graphical form into its text format. Automatic Arabic Handwriting words recognition using deep learning neural networks is still in the early stages in terms of research. There are no general, complete, and reliable Arabic Handwritten Words (AHW) database (lexicon) that can be used as a reference or a benchmark for all researchers who want to extend the work on automatic Arabic handwriting word recognition. Also, many historic Arabic manuscripts have deteriorated because of inappropriate storage and most of them have not been digitized due to the lack of reliable database that can be used to recognize the words of Arabic manuscripts. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) can be used to solve the problems of automatic Arabic handwriting words recognition. In this work, a new DCNN algorithm applied to a new dataset of Handwritten Arabic words representing the seven days of the week named Arabic Handwritten Weekdays Dataset (AHWD) has been programmed, tested, and analyzed.

Book excerpt: Cross-Word Modeling for Arabic Speech Recognition utilizes phonological rules in order to model the cross-word problem, a merging of adjacent words in speech caused by continuous speech, to enhance the performance of continuous speech recognition systems. The author aims to provide an understanding of the cross-word problem and how it can be avoided, specifically focusing on Arabic phonology using an HHM-based classifier.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arabic is a morphologically rich language which rarely displays diacritics. These two features of the language pose challenges when building Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems. Morphological complexity leads to many possible combinations of stems and affixes to form words, and produces texts with high Out Of Vocabulary (OOV) rates. In addition, texts rarely display diacritics which informs the reader about short vowels, geminates, and nunnations (word ending /n/). A lack of diacritics means that 30% of textual information is missing, causing ambiguities in lexical and language modeling when attempting to model pronunciations, and the context of a particular pronunciation. Intuitively, from an English centric view, the phrase th'wrtr wrt n thwrt with 'morphological decomposition' is realized as, th wrtr wrt n th wrt. Including 'diacritics' produces, the writer wrote in the writ. Thus our investigations in this thesis are twofold. Firstly, we show the benefits and interactions between modeling all classes of diacritics (short vowels, geminates, nunnations) in the lexicon. On a Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) corpus of broadcast news, this provides a 1.9% absolute improvement in Word Error Rate (WER) (p

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are one of several techniques in the family of Evolutionary Algorithms - algorithms that search for solutions to optimization problems by "evolving" better and better solutions. Genetic Algorithms have been applied in science, engineering, business and social sciences. This book consists of 16 chapters organized into five sections. The first section deals with some applications in automatic control, the second section contains several applications in scheduling of resources, and the third section introduces some applications in electrical and electronics engineering. The next section illustrates some examples of character recognition and multi-criteria classification, and the last one deals with trading systems. These evolutionary techniques may be useful to engineers and scientists in various fields of specialization, who need some optimization techniques in their work and who may be using Genetic Algorithms in their applications for the first time. These applications may be useful to many other people who are getting familiar with the subject of Genetic Algorithms.

The launch of a number of national translation projects, policies and awards in a number of Arab countries, together with the increasing translation from Arabic in a wide range of subject areas outside the Arab World – especially in the aftermath of the Arab Spring – have complicated and diversified the dynamics of the translation industry involving Arabic. The Routledge Handbook of Arabic Translation seeks to explicate Arabic translation practice, pedagogy and scholarship, with the aim of producing a state-of-the-art reference book that maps out these areas and meets the pedagogical and research needs of advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as active researchers.
