Book excerpt: This report describes the procedures used to calibrate the automated mass properties measurement system, a system consisting of various components that together measure the mass, center of mass location, magnitudes of the principal mass moments of inertia, and orientation of the principal axes of a given test object. This system, located at the Armstrong Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, can determine the mass properties of test objects weighing from 0.5 to 450 pounds. It is used for a variety of applications including measuring the properties of manikin segments for modeling purposes or evaluating newly developed helmets and night vision goggles to determine the effects of adding their mass to the head-neck system. As the system is actually composed of a number of devices that measure different aspects of the mass properties, each of these components must be calibrated separately. A description of the use of each component and the procedure used to calibrate it is presently for all of the devices. After each of these separate elements are calibrated, the accuracy of the entire system is then verified using an aluminum test block. The procedure described herein should be repeated at least once a month and before and after every test series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document describes an automated procedure to measure the mass, center of gravity, and principal moments of inertia of objects weighing up to 100 pounds. The procedure uses three-sided, orthogonal support boxes - to secure the test objects during testing and to provide a method for relating test object features to a known coordinate system, a digital balance and moment table - to determine the mass and center of gravity, a torsional pendulum - to determine the moments of inertia, a three-dimensional digitizer - to specify various axes systems and location of discrete landmarks, and a computer - for data acquisition and analysis. The procedure consists of measuring the mass properties of the test object secured within a support fixture and then subtracting the contribution of the support fixture, resulting in the mass properties of the test object alone. The inertial properties of the test object are then referenced to the center of mass of the test object through the location of reference points on the test object which form a test object based coordinate axis system.

In order to accurately assess the effects of such equipment, reliable measurements of mass, center of mass, and mass moments of inertia must be obtained. The Manikin Testing Laboratory at the Armstrong Laboratory has developed the Standard Automated Mass Properties (STAMP) system to experimentally determine the inertial properties of various objects. It is necessary to quantitatively determine the accuracy and repeatability of measurements obtained by the STAMP system to confidently use these values in analytical models, in correlations between observed empirical response and the inertial properties of head-mounted equipment, and in determining compliance with inertial properties specifications of new helmet- mounted systems.

Book excerpt: The Pilot Program for mass measurement is the result of a consideration in which the values produced are thought of as the products of a mass measurement process. The collective performance of elements of the mass measurement process results in establishing the process precision which, under certain conditions, can be described quantitatively by pertinent performance parameters. The uncertainty attached to the product of the process, the measured value, is computed from these parameters and reflects the total performance of the process rather than the immediate measurement which might have produced the value.Interpretations of uncertainty and surveillance tests are discussed. The Pilot Program in mass measurement, whereby suitable process performance parameters can be established for precise mass measurement processes in other facilities, is discussed.(Author).

Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory performs mass properties testing with the KSR330-60 Mass Properties Instrument (MPI). For man- mounted equipment, it is important to define and measure the mass properties in order to accurately develop math models, understand human performance impacts, and to conduct comparative evaluations. Determining mass properties requires a thorough theoretical understanding of the center-of-mass and mass moments of inertia. This report provides the operating theory and procedures to measure mass properties with the MPI ... Center-of-mass, Mass moments of inertia, Impacts, Man-Mounted equipment.

Book excerpt: Elastic devices such as load cells and proving rings, when used with comparison measurement techniques, yield uncertainties orders of magnitude smaller than generally accepted.Their use, in direct reading application, is affected by numerous characteristics of materials, as well as the techniques of application and interpretation of data. This paper is intended to present progress made in the evaluation of calibration techniques, to the end that such transducers may be used with a predictable uncertainty in direct reading applications.Attempts are being made to formulate calibration procedures which are consistent with application procedures. The confusion existing in the derivation and application of practical force units is considered sufficient justification for a brief discussion of forces derived from mass standards and gravitational acceleration.(Author).

To scientists and engineers, however, the answer is far from simple, and determining the answer demands consideration of an almost overwhelming number of factors. With an intriguing blend of history, fundamentals, and technical details, the Handbook of Mass Measurement sets forth the details

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technical Documentation for the Mass Calibration Laboratory Balance Automation The balance automation software was written to improve and ease the process of mass calibrations. Previously, mass calibration staff would measure a set of weights and record, manually on paper, the balance readings for each weighing step in the weighing process. This introduces dust into the measuring environment and inaccuracies in data collection. The weighing steps are dictated by the measurement design chosen by the staff according to the weight set. Proper sequencing of the measurements must also be done by hand most likely for long and tedious designs. Environmental values of air temperature, atmospheric pressure and relative humidity are recorded twice once before the weight measurements and once after also manually. Note as well that although the balances are electronic and capable of serial communications with computer equipment, they were used manually. The automation software's function allows one to four operators, each at any of the four stations, to perform measurements simultaneously. The software coordinates the balance and environmental readings by connecting the computer to the instruments via the coms boxes for each mass measurement. It communicates with the thermometer, barometer, hygrometer and balance through links between the ports of the coms boxes to get their readings, records the data values in files on the data disk, and instructs the operator on when to place weights on the balance pan. After the measurement of the weights is completed, the software filters the data for operator-rejected measurements, combines the data from previous series if they exist, and creates an input file that is formatted for the Mass Code software program. The Mass Code runs (and was developed) separately from this automation software. Note that the input file is created only after a single-series design measurement or after the last series of a design is complete. Also, the data file may be read into a Spreadsheet program for custom analysis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
