Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major modern edition of the wartime correspondence of General William T. Sherman, this volume features more than 400 letters written between the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and the day Sherman bade farewell to his troops in 1865. Together, they trace Sherman's rise from obscurity to become one of the Union's most famous and effective warriors. Arranged chronologically and grouped into chapters that correspond to significant phases in Sherman's life, the letters--many of which have never before been published--reveal Sherman's thoughts on politics, military operations, slavery and emancipation, the South, and daily life in the Union army, as well as his reactions to such important figures as General Ulysses S. Grant and President Lincoln. Lively, frank, opinionated, discerning, and occasionally extremely wrong-headed, these letters mirror the colorful personality and complex mentality of the man who wrote them. They offer the reader an invaluable glimpse of the Civil War as Sherman saw it.

Book Synopsis Home Letters of General Sherman by : William Tecumseh Sherman
Download or read book Home Letters of General Sherman written by William Tecumseh Sherman and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1909 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years after General William Tecumseh Sherman attained the height of his military achievement he published (in 1875) his Memoirs, an outspoken record of his career in peace and war. Ten years later he revised the Memoirs in the light of the abundant comment and criticism which they called forth. When nearly two more decades had passed, one of his children gave the public (in 1904) a liberal portion of the life-long correspondence between the General and his brother, the Hon. John Sherman. Both the Memoirs and the Sherman Letters brought to the readers of such books an animating knowledge of General Sherman as a writer-forcible, individual, fearless, the very counterpart in expression of everything which the history of his country records of him in action.

Download or read book Acting Out written by John Rohrbach and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cabinet cards were America’s main format for photographic portraiture throughout the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Standardized at 6½ x 4¼ inches, they were just large enough to reveal extensive detail, leading to the incorporation of elaborate poses, backdrops, and props. Inexpensive and sold by the dozen, they transformed getting one’s portrait made from a formal event taken up once or twice in a lifetime into a commonplace practice shared with friends. The cards reinforced middle-class Americans’ sense of family. They allowed people to show off their material achievements and comforts, and the best cards projected an informal immediacy that encouraged viewers to feel emotionally connected with those portrayed. The experience even led sitters to act out before the camera. By making photographs an easygoing fact of life, the cards forecast the snapshot and today’s ubiquitous photo sharing. Organized by senior curator John Rohrbach, Acting Out is the first ever in-depth examination of the cabinet card phenomena. Full-color plates include over 100 cards at full size, providing a highly entertaining collection of these early versions of the selfie and ultimately demonstrating how cabinet cards made photography modern. Published in association with the Amon Carter Museum of American Art.
