Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography of Sir Walter Scott, BartIf this were owing merely to the accidents of fortune, it would be scarcely worthy of remark; but it is to be attributed far less to these, than to a native amiableness of character, and to a uniform equanimity which he has struggled to preserve in every situation. Itis to be attributed also to a steady pursuit of those objects which he determined in the outset to make the business of his life; to an anxious care in avoiding useless controversies into which men, frequently before the public, and espe cially literary men, are apt to plunge themselves; and to a just and modest consciousness, that, as a member of society, there were duties to be per. Formed, and relations to be maintained, from which no elevation of genius could release him.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of Sir Walter Scott, Bart: With Critical Notices of His Writings At a proper age he was sent to the High School of Edinburgh, then under the superintendence of Dr Alexander Adam. In this school he passed through the different forms without exhibiting any of those extraordinary owersgof genius which are seldom remembered til the person to whom they are ascribed has become, by the maturity of his talents, an 0 'ect of distinction. It is said that he was conside in his boyhood rather heavy than otherwise, and that the late Dr Hugh Blair had discernment enough to predict his future eminence when the master of the school Lamented his dulness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Sir Walter Scott, Bart On this ground alone (namely, just ap preciation of character), the merits of the following sketch, if it has any, must rest. In the mere statement of events and dates (which, comparatively, are unimportant), there may be errors, which the writer, up to the present hour, had no opportunity to correct, if he had been solicitous to do so. But, instead of feeling anxious on that ao count, some anachronisms were, in one chapter, purposely introduced for the sake of promoting the author's wish (at the out set) to remain anonymous. N o introduction to Scott would be worth much in which that course was not followed. Indeed, excepting Sir Walter's own writ ings, there is hardly any other great source of information about him; and that is so full, that hardly anything need ful to illustrate the subject of Scott's life remains un touched. As regards the only matters of controversy, Scott's relations to the Ballantynes, I have taken care to check Mr. Lockhart's statements by reading those of the representatives of the Ballantyne brothers; but with this exception, Sir Walter's own works and Lockhart's life of him are the great authorities concerning his character and his story. Book Synopsis When Novels Were Books by : Jordan Alexander Stein

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literary scholar explains how eighteenth-century novels were manufactured, sold, bought, owned, collected, and read alongside Protestant religious texts. As the novel developed into a mature genre, it had to distinguish itself from these similar-looking books and become what we now call “literature.” Literary scholars have explained the rise of the Anglophone novel using a range of tools, from Ian Watt’s theories to James Watt’s inventions. Contrary to established narratives, When Novels Were Books reveals that the genre beloved of so many readers today was not born secular, national, middle-class, or female. For the first three centuries of their history, novels came into readers’ hands primarily as printed sheets ordered into a codex bound along one edge between boards or paper wrappers. Consequently, they shared some formal features of other codices, such as almanacs and Protestant religious books produced by the same printers. Novels are often mistakenly credited for developing a formal feature (“character”) that was in fact incubated in religious books. The novel did not emerge all at once: it had to differentiate itself from the goods with which it was in competition. Though it was written for sequential reading, the early novel’s main technology for dissemination was the codex, a platform designed for random access. This peculiar circumstance led to the genre’s insistence on continuous, cover-to-cover reading even as the “media platform” it used encouraged readers to dip in and out at will and read discontinuously. Jordan Alexander Stein traces this tangled history, showing how the physical format of the book shaped the stories that were fit to print.
