Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses of Fifty Years: The Autobiography of an American Woman I have been asked by the publishers of this Autobiography to write the Introduction. I am very glad to be asked. There is no woman in the world whose book I would rather introduce than that of my friend and co-worker, Frances E. Willard. From the first hour of my acquaintance with her, now more than sixteen years ago, she has been to me the embodiment of all that is lovely, and good, and womanly, and strong, and noble and tender, in human nature. She has been my queen among women, and I have felt it to be one of the greatest privileges of my life to call her my friend. I have been inspired by her genius, I have been cheered by her sympathy, I have been taught by her wisdom, I have been led onward and upward by her enthusiastic faith. We have met on almost every point of human interest, and have been together in joy and in sorrow, in success and in apparent failure; she has been a member of my household for weeks together, and I have seen her tried by prosperity and flattery, by misunderstanding and evil report; and always and everywhere she has been the same simple-hearted, fair-minded Christian woman, whose one sole aim has been to do the will of God as far as she knew it, and to bear whatever of apparent ill He may have permitted to come upon her, with cheerful submission, as being His loving discipline for the purpose of making her what, above all, she longs to be, a partaker of His holiness. In regard to her public work she has seemed to me one of God's best gifts to the American women of the nineteenth century, for she has done more to enlarge our sympathies, widen our outlook, and develop our gifts, than any man, or any other woman of her time. Every movement for the uplifting of humanity has found in her a cordial friend and active helper. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Autobiography of a Happy Woman It need hardly be stated here - these are the random thoughts of a busy woman, and of a woman who is happy because she works. Woman in industry is no new phenomenon in the world. Women have been in industry since time began, since Adam delved and Eve span. Only in modern days industry has gone out of the home; and woman has followed it out. Industrious women have been in indus try from creation. It is no new problem. It is an old problem projected out into the complex ities of a fearfully complicated modern world. Nor are these thoughts a series of fairy stories, of theories as to how things ought to be. They are narratives of fact, as to how things are, disguised so slightly as not to dis guise in the least, the thread of absolute truth. For disguises there are. Each chapter is a record of a segment from a life. These records could not have been given except on condition that the persons should remain anonymous. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rita: An Autobiography My dear mother was not a wise woman. She wanted energy to master the position of our affairs, and to try and better them and tact to gain an influence over her husband. I never saw her out of temper in my life and she was sore ly tried. But upon the other hand tears and reproaches from a sofa were the least available arguments for a man of my father's temperament, who, after a night's dissipation, rose up ready as a lion to run his course. And that course was often fatal to domestic unity. My mother lay on the sofa, and mended our clothes; receiving the few fine ladies who still, for the sake of old acquaintance, took the trouble, when they came to Paris, of climbing up four pair of stairs to see that poor Mrs. Percival, with a courtly grace that would not have ill-fitted some royal lady conferring the hon ors of the tabouret on her distinguished visitors in the old palace yonder. We shall not, God willing, lose our sturdier virtues in our pursuit of culture - rather let us sweep aside the mist of crudeness which hides them from the world. Let us add to our courage and our idealism and our kindliness a love of beauty and harmony in ourselves and our surround ings. Let us learn to express our pioneer virtues through the medium of charming manners. Then, indeed, we shall have made a lasting contribution of culture to the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Valerie: An Autobiography Although a persistent and successful match-maker for her friends, Valerie's views against marriage for herself are of the strongest. Here are some of them. For my part, I would not cross the street for the best man that ever was created. As friends, they are all very well; as advisers, in some cases they are useful; but when you talk Of marrying one and becoming his slave, that is quite another affair. This to Adele Chabot, ' who is about to marry a man whom she knows does not care for her, in the hope of winning his love. And again What is it in women that I do not fee], which makes them so mad after the other sex? Instinct, certainly, for reason is against it. Well! I have no Objec tion to seeing others commit the folly, provided that I am not led into it myself. When Valerie is awaiting the arrival Of her brother Auguste, from whom she has been separated for many years, and to whom she is devoted, these lines occur - I thought of the future. 'yes, ' thought I, 'marry I never will. That is decided. Nothing should ever in duce me!' We have heard, of course, of other girls who have made like resolutions, and have lived to break them; but surely Marryat meant to leave Valerie a happy Old maid, a pic ture of an independent, self-reliant woman, earning her own living, and asking help from no one. Must it not be the other band who is responsible for the marvellous Count de Chavannes, who appears at the end Of the book? Marryat would never have drawn so immaculate a man; he would not have believed in him. Such chivalry, right mindedness, and tact are not found in ordinary human beings, and if they were, would be too far above us to be attractive. However, the Count appears, instantly fascinating every one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Oliphant In this quiet confidence that everything had been so perfectly arranged for her, with her mind clear, even a little flicker of fun in her eyes at times, always a tender smile and word for those she loved, a great writer passed away from us, leaving a blank that there is certainly no one capable of filling. There have been, perhaps there are (and she herself would have been the first to say it with full belief), greater novelists, but who has ever achieved the same variety of literary work with any thing like the same level of excellence? A great deal of her very best remains at present anonymous - bio graphical and critical papers, and others dealing with an extraordinary variety of subjects. But merely to divide her books into classes gives some little idea of the range of her powers. Her novels, long and short. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Acquaintances, Old and New, Among ReformersThis little book is sent out in the hope that it may add a mite to the interest and success of the cause to which it is dedicated. In former years my children and other friends have often asked me to write some account of my work and the people that I have known but press of duties has always occupied my entire time and I have felt that it was better to let the dead past bury its de while I pressed forward to meet the de mands of the hour. When the Woman's Suflrage bill was presented to the voters last May, Mrs. Emma Smith Devoe and others interested in the cause urged me to write some account of the early reformers and others with whom I have worked from time to time. They thought that such a book would be a great help to the cause both by awaken in g a personal interest in reformers and by adding something to the treasury to meet the needs of the present campaign. Thus urged, I set about the writing. My time has been limited and I have been able to give only spare moments snatched from household duties, a large correspondence, planning the campaign and filling appointments. I have had no time to con sult records or verify statements. I have hastily written from memory those things which I hope will interest the younger advocates of the cause and inspire them to new endeavor.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
