Book excerpt: Excerpt from Authorised Report of the Church Congress: Held at Brighton, October, 6, 7, 8,& 9, 1874 IN issuing the Report of the Fourteenth Church Congress, the Committee believe that they are justified in adopting the state ment with which their President commenced his address to the working men of Brighton, that by general consent, none of the thirteen previous Congresses have excelled this, either in the numbers attending them, or in the interest excited by their discussions. They feel that the contents of the present volume, for which the best thanks of the Congress are due to the Readers and Speakers, enable them to point with equal satis faction to the value of these contributions to the better under standing of many important topics. In selecting and defining the subjects of discussion, it was the object of the Subjects' Committee to secure fresh treatment for these topics, as far as possible, partly by marking out the exact form under which it seemed desirable to deal with them, and partly by procuring the reports of personal experience on the success of recent efforts and experiments in Church organi astion, and Church work of various kinds. For details on the way in which they sought to carry out these objects, the Com mittee would refer to their President's inaugural address. They must appeal to the contents of the present volume for the success with which their design was realized. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to our perception of the centrality of the churches in English life in the nineteenth century, the disappointing results of the 1851 Religious Census led religious leaders to seek a variety of ways to increase religious allegiance as the century progressed. The apparent apathy and lack of interest in formal religion on the part of the working classes was particularly galling, and the various denominations tried hard to attract them through evangelical missions as well as social and charitable ventures which sometimes competed with religious concerns, to the latter’s detriment. This book traces the motivations, concerns and efforts of the churches, particularly in the period between 1870 and 1920, and the ambivalent responses of ordinary people. The Education Act of 1870 led to the churches losing their hold on the education of the young, a consequence foreseen by many church leaders, but unable to be prevented. By 1920 it was apparent that the churches’ optimism regarding an increased role with a war-weary population would not be fulfilled. The focus is on the city of Leeds, representative of the industrialised urban areas with burgeoning populations which proved to be such a challenge to the churches, at the same time stimulating them to ever-greater efforts.

Book excerpt: Over the course of nearly forty-five years of pastoral ministry, Octavius Winslow (1808–1878) effectively demonstrated the practice of applying doctrine to life through his experimental preaching. In Heart to Heart: Octavius Winslow’s Experimental Preaching , Tanner G. Turley surveys Winslow’s life and ministry and demonstrates how a strong theology of preaching provided the foundation for his preaching methodology. Turley highlights the doctrinal precision and Christological focus of Winslow’s preaching, revealing an aim at holistic change in hearers through the use of application, discrimination, inquiry, illustration, exhortation, and persuasion. By introducing us to this influential preacher of the past, this study shows the significance of Winslow’s homiletic for the church of today. Table of Contents: 1. Life and Ministry 2. Theology and Method of Preaching 3. Preaching Grounded in Doctrine 4. Preaching Centered in Christ 5. Theory and Practice 6. Contemporary Significance Appendix 1: Sermon on Psalm 130:3 Appendix 2: Sermon on Galatians 2:20 Appendix 3: Annotated Bibliography of Winslow’s Works

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 2003 and selected from papers given at the third biennial conference on Music in Nineteenth-Century Britain, this volume, in common with its two predecessors, reflects the interdisciplinary character of the topic. The introductory essay by Julian Rushton considers some of the questions that are key to this area of study: what is the nineteenth century, what is British music, and did London influence the continent? The essays that follow are divided into broad thematic groups covering aspects of gender, church music, national identity, and local and national institutions. This collection illustrates that while nineteenth-century British music studies is still in its infancy as a field of research, it is one that is burgeoning and contributing to our understanding of British social and cultural life of the period.
