Book excerpt: This is the fascinating story of Mary Maguire, a 1930s Australian ingenue who sailed for Hollywood and a fabulous life, only to have her career cut short by scandal and tragedy. Packed with celebrity, history and gossip, AUSTRALIA'S SWEETHEART is perfect for readers of SHEILA and THE RIVIERA SET. Mary Maguire was Australia's first teenage movie star and she captivated Hollywood in the mid 1930s. Mary lived on three continents and was celebrated in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Los Angeles and London. Her life was lived in parallel with seminal incidents of the twentieth century: the Spanish Flu; the Great Depression; the Bodyline series; Australia's early radio, talkies and aviation; Hollywood's Golden Era; the British aristocracy's embrace of European fascism; London's Blitz; and post-war American culture and politics. Mary knew everyone, from Douglas Jardine, Don Bradman, Errol Flynn and Ronald Reagan, to William Randolph Hearst, Maureen O'Sullivan, Judy Garland and Queen Elizabeth II. AUSTRALIA'S SWEETHEART in an irresistible never-before-told story that captures the glamour of Hollywood and the turbulent times of the twentieth century, with a young woman at its centre. If you loved THE AMAZING MRS LIVESEY, Robert Wainwright's SHEILA and MISS MURIEL MATTERS, you will adore AUSTRALIA'S SWEETHEART.

After leaving the military, Major Blanchard moved to Papillon, Louisiana, to be with his aging father, where he's taken a deputy position with the sheriff’s department. Now that he’s settling into life on the bayou, he’s trying out the dating scene. Every single woman in town seems to be pining after the handsome newcomer. But so far, nothing’s worked out, and he’s had some spectacularly bad dates. Major’s getting ready to give up on love when a new lady roars into town to film a movie and turns his world upside down. Actress Brynn Pearson is trying to make a successful transition from child star to leading lady. Now that she’s landed her first lead in a major film, nothing can stop her. She's committed to focusing solely on her work, so romance is the last thing she needs—too bad she can’t get her mind off the dreamy deputy she keeps running into. He’s gorgeous, and something about him makes her feel safe. As Brynn’s feelings for Major deepen, she starts to wonder if maybe there’s more to life than her career. When a family crisis throws Major’s life into a tailspin, he turns to Brynn for support, and hopes their budding relationship will shine brighter than Hollywood lights.

Book excerpt: Gretchen Lowell, the world's most beautiful serial killer, has escaped from prison in Chelsea Cain's unpredictable, edge-of-your-seat thriller, Sweetheart. With Heartsick, Chelsea Cain took the crime world by storm, introducing two of the most compelling characters in decades: serial killer Gretchen Lowell and her obsessed pursuer Portland Detective Archie Sheridan. The book spent four weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and garnered rave reviews around the world. But the riveting story of Archie and Gretchen was left unfinished, and now Chelsea Cain picks up the tale again. When the body of a young woman is discovered in Portland's Forest Park, Archie is reminded of the last time they found a body there, more than a decade ago: it turned out to be the Beauty Killer's first victim, and Archie's first case. This body can't be one of Gretchen's—she's in prison—but after help from reporter Susan Ward uncovers the dead woman's identity, it turns into another big case. Trouble is, Archie can't focus on the new investigation because the Beauty Killer case has exploded: Gretchen Lowell has escaped from prison. Archie hadn't seen her in two months; he'd moved back in with his family and sworn off visiting her. Though it should feel like progress, he actually feels worse. The news of her escape spreads like wildfire, but secretly, he's relieved. He knows he's the only one who can catch her, and in fact, he has a plan to get out from under her thumb once and for all. Chelsea Cain has topped her own bestselling debut thriller with this unputdownable, unpredictable, edge-of-your-seat read.

Book excerpt: After Scarlett Morgan—aka pop star Ruby—collapses on stage, she doubts whether she will ever be able to sing again. So she heads to the small town of Hope Springs—her safe place, the place where she found her voice all those years ago—in the hope of saving her career. Scarlett doesn't even know who she would be if she could no longer be Ruby. Archer Paterson recognised Scarlett the moment he saw her. He’d been following her career for years and he knew that behind the wig and the makeup was the same girl who’d won the Hope Springs talent quest all those years ago. But the last thing he expected was for her to pretend that she wasn’t the mega-popular recording star everyone knew as Ruby. He went along with it, because why not? She wanted to be incognito and he didn’t want the status quo of his small town to be disrupted by a horde of media. But then things got complicated. *This book is set in Australia and uses Australian/UK English

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixties was a decade of safari suits, shift dresses, capri pants and droopy moustaches. Of multi-purpose French onion soup, junket, tripe and Bloody Marys. Of success on the world's sporting stage and social and political stirrings at home, as Baby Boomers and their parents began to see the world differently. Award-winning and much loved actor Noeline Brown cut a groovy figure in the sixties. She confesses to us early on in "Living the 1960s" that she: 'was a bit of a snob...I preferred to listen to jazz and performance poetry, to appreciate the lyrics of Bob Dylan and to watch foreign films. I wore a lot of black and dramatic eye makeup, and frequented windowless coffee lounges where people smoked heavily and played chess'. When she caught sight of The Rolling Stones in Sydney's Hilton cocktail bar one night during their 1965 tour to Australia, she coolly noted their drink of choice, bartender Eddie Tirado's newly introduced Bourbon and Coke, before returning to sip her classic Martini, 'hoping to look cosmopolitan and sophisticated'. Noeline also found time to be a committed weekend hippy, to entertain us on the ground-breaking satirical "The Mavis Bramston Show" and to frequent Vadim's restaurant till dawn, discussing the state of the world with artists, journalists and dissenters, under the watchful gaze of ASIO operatives. With her trademark dry sense of humour and story-teller's gift, Noeline is our knowledgeable guide into the smoke-filled bars and cafes, the pastel lounge rooms and boardrooms of 1960s Australia. She explains the different social tribes: a hippy 'could live off the smell of an oily rag, and appeared to be wearing it as well'; a beatnik, according to DJ John Burls, was someone who 'had a little beard, drank wine from a goatskin and called everybody man'. Young people identified as Sharpies, Mods, Rockers and Surfies, depending on the fashions they wore and the music they listened to. She takes us along the supermarket shopping aisles, to the family dinner table: 'I found a recipe in a magazine for Greek moussaka, which featured minced lamb and potatoes, not an eggplant in sight. The list of ingredients included garlic, the use of which was 'optional'. The white sauce topping was made from yoghurt, flour and egg yolks. Many dishes called for stock cubes and even monosodium glutamate. A recipe for 'Neapolitan pizza' dough in The Australian Women's Weekly in 1968 included copha and Deb Instant Potato Flakes. But the nation was changing as young Australians woke up and switched on and our cities became more diverse. New smells of garlic and rosemary - and other herbs - wafted through suburban back lanes and people took to the streets to protest conscription and to let the government know that they were not all the way with LBJ. Containing more than 160 images, and combining entertaining social history, fact boxes and lively anecdotes, "Living the 1960s" paints a picture of a decade that didn't just swing; it twisted, stomped and screamed. For Noeline, as for a generation of Australians, it was the most important decade of her life.

Book excerpt: Everyone knows Mrs Danvers as a byword for menace in Hitchcock's Rebecca and as a poster girl for lesbians in the movies. But only dedicated fans know her brilliant creator. This book tells Judith Anderson's life story for the first time. It recovers her career as one of the great stars of stage and television and an important character actress in film. Born in Adelaide, Australia, in 1897, brought up by a determined single mother, she parlayed her rich, velvety voice and ability to give reality to strong emotional roles into stardom on Broadway in the 1920s. Not a conventional beauty, she was alluring, with her beautiful body, perfect dress sense, and striking, volatile personality. After playing glamorous roles, she was recognised as a Leading Lady of the American Stage under the direction of Guthrie McClintic in Hamlet and co-starring with Laurence Olivier and Maurice Evans in Macbeth. Her reputation as a great actress was confirmed by her landmark performance in 1947 in the ancient Greek Medea, adapted for her by her friend, poet Robinson Jeffers. In a long career, she appeared in Medea again in 1982 at the age of 85, playing the Nurse to fellow-Australian Zoe Caldwell's Medea. Ambitious and driven, Anderson toured extensively, made numerous highly praised appearances on television, and, after her unforgettable role as Mrs Danvers, was a sought-after character actress in film, playing her last role as Vulcan High Priestess in Star Trek III at the age of 87. She won many awards and was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1960 and Companion of the Order of Australia just before her death in 1992. She had a stormy private life and two short marriages, which, she remarked, were 'much too long.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Horne famously called Australia &‘ the lucky country' . So how did we become the locked-up country and how might the future look different? Australia has changed enormously since Horne' s 1960s, but its response to the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrates the enduring truth of his thesis that our &‘ luck' was undeserved and wouldn' t last. By closing its borders and imposing a nationally coordinated lockdown, Australia unexpectedly eliminated COVID-19 in 2020, achieving one of the world' s lowest excess mortality rates. But as governments proceeded to bungle key planks of the pandemic response, by mid-2021, Australia was &‘ locked up' &– closed off to the world and fragmented along state and territory borders, with its major cities enduring repeated and extended lockdowns. It soon became clear that Australia' s regulatory state had let us down. But these failures were not inevitable, and we can manage future crises more successfully. In The Locked-up Country, political experts Tom Chodor and Shahar Hameiri identify the source of Australia' s recent challenges and suggest a better way forward.

Made less than a decade after the events it is based on, using many of the people involved in those events as actors, the film explored Melbourne’s ‘postpunk’ counterculture of share houses, drugs and decadence. Amongst its ensemble cast was Michael Hutchence, one of the biggest music stars of the period, in his acting debut. This book is a collection of essays exploring the place, period and legacy of Dogs in Space, by people who were there or who have been affected by this remarkable film. The writers are musicians, actors and artists and also academics in heritage, history, urban planning, gender studies, geography, performance and music. This is an invaluable resource for anyone passionate about Australian film, society, culture, history, heritage, music and art.
