Book excerpt: Dr William Wyatt emigrated to the new colony of South Australia in 1837. He became a notable pioneer and briefly held government positions including coroner and protector of Aborigines, but his major interests and influence were in the fields of cultural development, medicine and education. KEEPING A TRUST tells the story of the life of William Wyatt, and how when he approached the end of his days without an heir, he arranged to place his assets into a trust and instructed that it be used for South Australians experiencing poverty. The Wyatt Benevolent Institution was formed and since then has grown to become one of Australias leading philanthropic institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of South Australia investigates South Australia's history from before the arrival of the first European maritime explorers to the present day, and examines its distinctive origins as a 'free' settlement. In this compelling and nuanced history, Paul Sendziuk and Robert Foster consider the imprint of people on the land - and vice versa - and offer fresh insights into relations between Indigenous people and the European colonisers. They chart South Australia's economic, political and social development, including the advance and retreat of an interventionist government, the establishment of the state's distinctive socio-political formations, and its relationship to the rest of Australia and the world. The first comprehensive, single-volume history of the state to be published in over fifty years, A History of South Australia is an essential and engaging contribution to our understanding of South Australia's past.

Book excerpt: The entire Australian continent was once covered with networks of Indigenous placenames. These names often evoke important information about features of the environment and their place in Indigenous systems of knowledge. On the other hand, placenames assigned by European settlers and officials are largely arbitrary, except for occasional descriptive labels such as 'river, lake, mountain'. They typically commemorate people, or unrelated places in the Northern hemisphere. In areas where Indigenous societies remain relatively intact, thousands of Indigenous placenames are used, but have no official recognition. Little is known about principles of forming and bestowing Indigenous placenames. Still less is known about any variation in principles of placename bestowal found in different Indigenous groups. While many Indigenous placenames have been taken into the official placename system, they are often given to different features from those to which they originally applied. In the process, they have been cut off from any understanding of their original meanings. Attempts are now being made to ensure that additions of Indigenous placenames to the system of official placenames more accurately reflect the traditions they come from. The eighteen chapters in this book range across all of these issues. The contributors (linguistics, historians and anthropologists) bring a wide range of different experiences, both academic and practical, to their contributions. The book promises to be a standard reference work on Indigenous placenames in Australia for many years to come.

This book was released on 1863 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First edition: John McDouall Stuart’s fifth and sixth expeditions across central Australia. The expedition of 1861, Stuart’s fifth major venture into the interior, was a failure. Nonetheless Stuart set forth on his sixth expedition in October 1861 and won the distinction of leading the first successful expedition from the south of the continent to the Indian ocean in the north – and living to tell the tale. Burke and Wills, in their over-hasty dash from Cooper’s Creek had in fact beaten Stuart in crossing the continent but paid a heavy price for their impatience. Notwithstanding, Stuart himself was debilitated by fatigue and scurvy; he spent much of the return journey strung on a stretcher between two horses before returning to a hero’s welcome at Adelaide in December 1862. Of special interest is the large Melbourne-printed lithographed map that accompanies this volume. The map was prepared by the Government printer from Stuart’s journals, tracing the paths of the expeditions of 1861 and 1862 (and previous exploration of the region by Ludwig Leichhardt). The 1862 expedition transects the map from south to north, its torturous path beginning at the Ashburton ranges, then northwards to Daly waters followed by the Roper and Adelaide rivers. Sketch details are provided of the coastline and Melville Island, including the location near Cape Hotham where Stuart’s expedition reached the sea and planted their flag. Australian Rare Books notes that the paper stock used for this edition is prone to heavy foxing: ‘Experience has shown that the text of most – if not all – copies of the 1863 Melbourne Stuart is badly foxed and discoloured, and so collectors should not shun what may seem at first sight an inferior copy.’

Book excerpt: In August 1844 a heavily-laden party led by Captain Charles Sturt set out from Adelaide to head into the unexplored vastness of central Australia. Amongst their equipment was a boat: as well as carrying out his mission of scientific investigation and mapping the topography, Sturt was convinced he would find the inland sea that was reputed to lie in the middle of the continent and so make his reputation. This is the first full publication of Sturt's original journals of the trip. They record the hardships of the journeying through the parched landscape, but also show how his efforts helped reveal the nature of much of the mysterious interior of Australia, and how, in a manner uncharacteristic of his times, he established respectful and co-operative relations with the Aborigines he encountered along the way.
