Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study examined the publicly-funded vocational education and training (VET) system in South Australia (SA) in 1997. Background information indicated SA is a geographically large state with a relatively small population that is older compared to the rest of Australia, with 14 percent aged over 65 compared with 12 percent nationally. Findings were that SA accounts for about 8 percent of the Australian population, 10 percent of publicly-funded VET students, and about 8 percent of apprentices and trainees. Of the population aged 15-64 years, 11.6 percent undertook some kind of VET, above the national average of 10.5 percent. SA has the highest proportion of female students with 53 percent, well above the national average of 48.1 percent. Female VET students had a slightly higher module completion rate. Technical and further education (TAFE) qualifications increased the chances of finding work, and more than one quarter of all TAFE graduates named "to get a job" their main reason for undertaking study. Manufacturing, construction, and retail industries accounted for nearly three quarters of all apprenticeships and traineeships in SA. Employers cited these three areas of change as most likely to affect future training needs: advancing technology and automation, the need for workers to be more qualified or skilled, and government policies and legislation. SA students and employers were generally satisfied with VET provision. (YLB)

Book excerpt: This study compares vocational education and training (VET) in Australia, Germany and the United Kingdom, with a view to providing information for consideration by policy-makers. The initial focus on industry involvement in VET highlights how all three systems, which are dedicated to improving relevant workforce skills and providing industry-relevant training for young people, have looked to increasing the involvement of industry in training. Also highlighted are the importance of apprenticeship pathways, especially for Australia and Germany, and a focus on restoring such pathways in the United Kingdom. The introduction of assessment-only pathways to qualifications, observed in the United Kingdom and Australia, and the importance of institutional pathways to vocational qualifications are also explored. Similarities are observed in approaches to quality assurance and the effect of European harmonisation (such that systems across countries are compatible) policies on the transfer of students and credits between institutions. In comparing these countries, the author argues that there are more similarities than there are differences. The convergence of approach is, however, much more evident in the conceptual underpinnings of training policies, rather than in their practical implementation. Nevertheless, moves to âharmoniseâ European education and training may also mean increasing convergence of practice. [p.7, ed].

Not only does the story present a chronological account of events, people and institutions, it also offers an explanation of how the system actually works and this has application well beyond the Territory. The mix of historical accounting and operational analysis comes from a unique perspective. It is proposed that the best way to understand the behaviour of the government ministers who have responsibility for vocational training is to compare their decisions and actions with those of wealthy philanthropists.

Book excerpt: Rethinking a Sustainable Society Alan Mayne The world has already passed the midway point for achieving by 2015 the eight Millennium Development Goals for a “more peaceful, prosperous and just world” that were set by the United Nations in the wake of its inspirational Millennium Dec- 1 laration in 2000. These goals range from combating poverty, hunger, and disease, to empowering women, and ensuring environmental sustainability. However Ban Ki-Moon, the United Nations Secretary-General, conceded in 2007 that progress to date has been mixed. During 2008 the head of the United Nations World Food P- gramme cautioned that because of the surge in world commodity prices the program had insuf?cient money to stave off global malnutrition, and the World Health Or- nization warned of a global crisis in water and sanitation. Depressing news accounts accumulate about opportunities missed to achieve a fairer world order and ecolo- calsustainability:themanipulationofelectionresultsinAfrica, humanrightsabuses in China, 4000 Americans dead and another nation torn apart by a senseless and protracted war in Iraq, and weasel words by the world’s political leadership in the lead-up to negotiations for a climate change deal in 2009 that is supposed to stabilize global carbon dioxide emissions. It is clear that the parameters of the debates that drive progressive policy change urgently require repositioning and energizing. As is shown by the contributors to Rethinking work and learning, experts in the humanities and social sciences (HASS) couldhaveanimportantroletoplayinthisprocess.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problem Solving for Teaching and Learning explores the importance of problem solving to learning in everyday personal and social contexts. This book is divided into four sections: Setting the scene; Conceptualising problem solving; Teachers’ knowledge and beliefs about problem solving; and Fostering students’ problem-solving capabilities, allowing readers to gain an insight into the various sub-topics that problem solving in learning and teaching introduce. Drawing together diverse perspectives on problem solving located in a variety of educational settings, this book explores problem solving theory, including its cognitive architecture, as well as attending to its translation into teaching and learning in a range of settings, such as education and social environments. This book also suggests how effective problem-solving activities can be incorporated more explicitly in learning and teaching and examines the benefits of this approach. The ideas developed in Problem Solving for Teaching and Learning will act as a catalyst for transforming practices in teaching, learning, and social engagement in formal and informal educational settings, making this book an essential read for education academics and students specialising in cognitive psychology, educational psychology, and problem solving.

Book excerpt: Librarians must now work at a different level from that required 20 years ago, but the training available is not always appropriate or accessible to all. The authors of this volume have responded to this significant and continuing change within the profession by offering a much-needed guide to best practice for staff training and development in library and information work. This handbook addresses new aspects of service provision both in the UK and abroad, and provides an up-to-date review of the current developments that are becoming increasingly important to librarians through the influence of the electronic age and the widening of areas of professional involvement. The Handbook of Library Training Practice and Development will be invaluable to those responsible for the development of staff and line managers as well as providing a crucial insight into the information profession for anyone new to this career path or looking to develop their knowledge within it.

Book excerpt: Inequality is a marked and persistent feature of education systems, both in the developed and the developing worlds. Major gaps in opportunity and in outcomes have become more critical than in the past, thanks to the knowledge economy and globalization. The pursuit of equity as a goal of public policy is examined in this book through a series of national case-studies. The book covers many different global contexts from the wealthiest to some of the poorest nations on earth. It therefore offers a broad range of different theoretical and methodological approaches, and brings together extensive international experience in equity policy.
