Book Synopsis The Action Plan for Australian Lizards and Snakes 2017 by : Nicola Mitchell
Download or read book The Action Plan for Australian Lizards and Snakes 2017 written by Nicola Mitchell and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 1378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lizards and snakes (squamate reptiles) are the most diverse vertebrate group in Australia, with approximately 1000 described species, representing about 10% of the global squamate diversity. Squamates are a vital part of the Australian ecosystem, but their conservation has been hindered by a lack of knowledge of their diversity, distribution, biology and key threats. The Action Plan for Australian Lizards and Snakes 2017 provides the first comprehensive assessment of the conservation status of Australian squamates in 25 years. Conservation assessments are provided for 986 species of Australian lizards and snakes (including sea snakes). Over the past 25 years there has been a substantial increase in the number of species and families recognised within Australia. There has also been an increase in the range and magnitude of threatening processes with the potential to impact squamates. This has resulted in an increase in the proportion of the Australian squamate fauna that is considered Threatened. Notably over this period, the first known extinction (post-European settlement) of an Australian reptile species occurred – an indication of the increasingly urgent need for better knowledge and management of this fauna. Six key recommendations are presented to improve the conservation management and plight of Australian squamates. This Action Plan represents an essential resource for research scientists, conservation biologists, conservation managers, environmental consultants, policy makers from Commonwealth and State/Territory governments, and the herpetological community.

Using a vast array of artful strategies, lizards have managed to find a home in virtually all terrestrial habitats. Australian Lizards: A Natural Historytakes the reader on a journey through the remarkable life of lizards. Book excerpt: A Complete Guide to Reptiles of Australia has been the most comprehensive field guide available for Australian reptiles since the first edition was published in 2003. This fifth edition includes images, descriptions and maps for all 1,011 species of reptiles described up until the end of December 2016. Some of these are pictured in life for the first time, and many are represented by several images to depict geographical and sexual differences. The book features easy to use diagnostic illustrations to explain anatomical features, a comprehensive glossary, and the more significant reptile habitats are pictured. Each species has a clear and concise text description to aid identification, with diagnostic differences from confusion species given in bold font. Each species has a distribution map and image(s) on the facing page. For ease of use, indexes to both scientific and common names are provided. Designed as field guide, with a sturdy plastic cover and compact layout, the target readership for this book is anyone with an interest in reptiles, whether scientists or amateurs. Previous editions are regarded as the standard reference guide for professionals working in the field and have also been popular with general naturalists.
Book Synopsis New Zealand Lizards by : David G. Chapple
Download or read book New Zealand Lizards written by David G. Chapple and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume is a timely and comprehensive summary of the New Zealand lizard fauna. Nestled in the south-west Pacific, New Zealand is a large archipelago that displays the faunal signatures of both its Gondwanan origins, and more recent oceanic island influences. New Zealand was one of the last countries on Earth to be discovered, and likewise, the full extent of the faunal diversity present within the archipelago is only just starting to be appreciated. This is no better exemplified than in lizards, where just 30 species (20 skinks, 10 geckos) were recognized in the 1950s, but now 104 are formally or informally recognized (61 skinks, 43 geckos). Thus, New Zealand contains one of the most diverse lizard faunas of any cool, temperate region on Earth. This book brings together the world’s leading experts in the field to produce an authoritative overview of the history, taxonomy, biogeography, ecology, life-history, physiology and conservation of New Zealand lizards.

Book Synopsis Varanoid Lizards of the World by : Erick Pianka
Download or read book Varanoid Lizards of the World written by Erick Pianka and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-21 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monitor lizards (genus Varanus) have attracted a great deal of interest--these large and impressive lizards are often the centerpiece of reptile house exhibits. Monitors tend to be fairly wary and difficult to observe--therefore they are not particularly tractable research subjects, but they have nevertheless received an extraordinary amount of attention from devoted students.Varanoid Lizards of the World is a comprehensive account of virtually everything important that is known about monitor lizards, beginning with detailed species accounts and proceeding to various modern comparative analyses. Where possible, people who have had detailed field experience with a particular species have assembled species accounts. In the process of reporting what is known, we also identify what remains to be learned about these lizards. We hope to establish a prototype showing how such a diverse monophyletic group can be exploited both to identify and to understand the actual course of evolution. As such, this effort becomes a protocol for future workers to follow for other groups of closely-related species.
