Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia and the Global Trade System provides a comprehensive account of Australia's role in developing and maintaining the multilateral trade system from its origins in 1947 to the present day. Australia was one of the 23 original signatories to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), and its participation was vital to the success of international efforts to reconstruct a multilateral trade system after the disastrous experiences of the 1930s. Since then, Australia has wielded far more influence in the GATT, and its successor, the World Trade Organization (WTO). This 2001 book, based on archival sources and oral interviews, makes a significant contribution to our understanding of Australia's trade policies, its commercial diplomacy, and its role and position in the global political economy. It provides a perspective on debates about the capacity of small nations to be agents as well as subjects of history.

What are the implications of this accession? Leading scholars and practitioners from the US, Europe, China, Australia and Japan argue that China's membership will affect the WTO's decision-making, dispute resolution and rule-based structures. It will also spur legal and economic reform, have far-reaching social, political and distributional consequences in China, facilitate a new role for China in international geo-political affairs, and alter the shape, structure and content of the international trading system as a whole. Of interest to scholars of China, as well as trade lawyers and economists.

Book excerpt: With increased interest in Canada and Australia over the last decade, students of foreign policy have produced an increasingly diverse range of scholarly material concerning the role and issue-orientation of these two countries. But until now there has been no study that bridges the mode of analysis found in the distinctive sets of comparative and international relations literature. In Between Countries fills this gap by providing a detailed study of the similarities and differences between Australia and Canada relating to agricultural trade negotiations.

Book Synopsis Economic Relations Between Australia and the European Union by : Gonzalo Villalta Puig
Download or read book Economic Relations Between Australia and the European Union written by Gonzalo Villalta Puig and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union (EU) is the largest economic partner of Australia: the EU is Australia's second largest trading partner and the EU is Australia's largest investment partner. Yet, the EU remains the only major trading and investment partner with whom Australia does not have an Economic Integration Agreement or even a Preferential Trade Agreement, either in force or under negotiation. Without one, the legal and policy systems that regulate trade and investment between Australia and the EU must function in the complexity of different levels of political economy: non-unitary internal and external market constitutions against bilateral sectoral and multilateral general agreements on trade and investment. This book is the first to present a monographic study of the law and policy of trade and investment between Australia and the EU. Prof. Gonzalo Villalta Puig argues that a trade and investment agreement is necessary to remove the agricultural tariffs and quarantine requirements and to harmonize the regulatory divergences that bar bilateral trade. It is further necessary to facilitate and guarantee two-way investment. The book critically discusses: the Partnership Framework Agreement between Australia and the EU; the Mutual Recognition Agreement, Wine Agreement, and other sectoral agreements between Australia and the EU; the World Trade Organization (WTO) Trade Policy Reviews of Australia and the EU and disputes between them; Australia's biosecurity system of quarantine requirements and food safety standards, its Luxury Car Tax, Wine Equalization Tax rebate, use of geographical indications, and the effect of Australian Industry Participation rules on government procurement market access; the EU's agricultural protection system of tariff rates, export refunds, and Common Agricultural Policy direct payments and the consistency of its standards and technical regulations; the economic constitutions of Australia and the EU and their judicial interpretation; and the key provisions of a prospective trade and investment agreement between Australia and the EU. Original, significant, and rigorous, Economic Relations between Australia and the European Union: Law and Policy is certain to influence the development of both the bilateral relationship and the WTO as a multilateral forum for trade and investment liberalization. It is, thus, an essential reference for lawyers, customs brokers, freight forwarders, government officials, academics, and all professionals with an interest in the regulation of economic globalization.
Book Synopsis Relocating Middle Powers by : Andrew F. Cooper
Download or read book Relocating Middle Powers written by Andrew F. Cooper and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fall of the Berlin Wall and the disintegration of the Soviet Union were only two of the many events that profoundly altered the international political system in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In a world no longer dominated by Cold War tensions, nation states have had to rethink their international roles and focus on economic rather than military concerns. This book examines how two middle powers, Australia and Canada, are grappling with the difficult process of relocating themselves in the rapidly changing international economy. The authors argue that the concept of middle power has continuing relevance in contemporary international relations theory, and they present a number of case studies to illustrate the changing nature of middle power behaviour.

Book Synopsis Australia and International Trade Law by : Andrew D. Mitchell
Download or read book Australia and International Trade Law written by Andrew D. Mitchell and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter examines the prominent role that Australia has played in the multilateral trading system, with a specific focus on the WTO and Australia's preferential trade agreements (PTAs). Australia has been actively involved in the WTO, through GATT and WTO negotiations, WTO committee work, WTO disputes, and WTO review of Australian trade law and policy. In WTO negotiations, Australia is a respected and active player, and has even led the way in certain areas. Australia has also been involved in a significant number of WTO disputes covering a broad range of matters, and in this context it has contributed to the development of WTO law and practice. Like many other countries, Australia has vigorously pursued the conclusion of PTAs with a range of trading partners, particularly in recent years. This has created tensions between Australia's approach to international trade law and its interaction with domestic regulation.
