This book was released on 1971-07-02 with total page 1698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 2 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.

Book Synopsis Adult Learning in the Language Classroom by : Stacey Margarita Johnson
Download or read book Adult Learning in the Language Classroom written by Stacey Margarita Johnson and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores connections between the fields of foreign/second language teaching and adult learning. This interdisciplinary approach serves as a framework in order to: (a) understand the teaching methods that promote the deeper, more critical sort of language learning advocated by scholars and professional organizations, (b) understand how adult students learn and transform through language study, and (c) reinforce the immense value of beginning language courses. Johnson studies a classroom of adult language learners for one semester, exploring issues of motivation and perceived value for these short-term learners as well as touching on issues around intercultural communication teaching and learning. The book will be of interest to adult language teachers as well as researchers studying adult education and second language learning.

Book Synopsis Lost to Desire by : Wolfgang Lassmann
Download or read book Lost to Desire written by Wolfgang Lassmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-28 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the work of psychoanalysts in post WWII France with patients beset by somatic problems with little manifest fantasy life, and how their concept of opératoire continues to inform the theory and practice of working with patients in crisis. The author explores what the new concept has elicited in a community of practitioners – close to the École Psychosomatique de Paris – over a period of some sixty years. As a 'skin for thought' it facilitated change while preserving coherence, gradually beginning to attract further considerations. Important themes have included: the early groundwork necessary for the configuration of fantasy, the importance of a shared imaginary, the role of denial and obliterated memories as a bond between people, emergency measures of a Me cut off from revitalisation, the effects of the rhythms and atmosphere at the workplace on family life, and the consequences of a crisis suppressed for lack of a holding frame. As psychoanalytic discourse adapted to the challenges, the original perspective changed aspect, moving from a systematic evaluation of what the patients did not produce to what the analyst had to fill in to make sense of the situation. Clashing with the terrain, French psychoanalysts raised important problems about psychic anaemia that are stimulating and deserve cross-cultural discussion. This book will appeal to psychoanalysts in practice and training who wish to learn more about this ground-breaking work on memory and trauma, and how to apply it to their own practice.
Book Synopsis Scenes of Seduction by : Jann Matlock
Download or read book Scenes of Seduction written by Jann Matlock and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jann Matlock's study of prostitution, hysteria, and the novel in nineteenth-century France considers, for the first time, the three topics together with their links to constructions of female marginality and desire. Made increasingly accessible to a large public by inexpensive printing methods, new forms of circulation like the roman-feuilleton, and rising literacy rates among women and workers, the novel became the medium for exchanges over women's bodies and desires. Matlock reveals the coincident traffic of the novel in the subjects of women on the fringe of society - prostitutes, hysterics, and madwomen- and the invitations extended to its new readers to explore new worlds of sexuality and intrigue. In addition, Matlock examines debates on the tolerance of prostitution, sexual continence, the relationship between female sexuality and madness, and the "dangers" of literature by incorporating into her study material from a myriad of archives, including medical case studies, police reports, newspaper editorials, and memoirs. Against this rich background, she discusses the novels of Balzac, Dumas fils, Sand, Soulié, and Sue, many of which were directed at a female audience.

Book Synopsis Swiss Men of Letters: Twelve Literary Essays by : Alex Natan
Download or read book Swiss Men of Letters: Twelve Literary Essays written by Alex Natan and published by Berg Publishers. This book was released on 1970 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature of a nation reflects the history of the country concerned. Although Switzerland is only a small nation she can look back upon a long and fascinating history. The Swiss Confederation was not brought about in any spectacular way but can best be described as the end product of prevailing common sense which welded four distinctly different ethnic groups together and safeguarded their independent cultural development. The ways and means of this achievement were complicated and intricate, and mirrored successfully solutions which the rest of Europe, facing similar problems, never mastered. In this indigenous evolution of Switzerland the reader will find the explanation why there is no history of Swiss literature but a history of the literatures of all four national languages, each of which can claim special and adequate attention by literary historians. While the literature of other countries brought the testimonies of literary achievement forward like a huge wave which began in times immemorial, reached the present and flows on into the future, one feels rather inclined to speak of four different rivers in Swiss literature, each taking its own and individual course.
