Book excerpt: A three-dimensional, three-fluid simulation (ions, electrons, and neutrals) was explicitly parallelized, facilitating the study of small-scale magnetospheric-ionospheric (M-1) coupling processes. The model has ionization and recombination, self-consistently (semi-empirically) determined collision frequencies, and a height resolved ionosphere. Inclusion of ion inertial terms in the momentum equation enables the propagation of Alfvén waves. Investigation at small scales required large system domains, and thus fast parallel computers. The model was explicitly parallelized--enabling investigations of M-1 coupling processes on very small temporal and spatial scales. The generation, reflection, and propagation of Alfvén waves is of importance to the understanding of M-1 coupling processes--it is, in fact, the primary means of communication of physical processes in the coupled system. Alfvénic reflections were modeled for two different boundary conditions, and it was shown that the deformation of the current layer was Alfvénic in character. Visualizations of the data obtained appear to be consistent with the visual characteristics of actual discrete aurora in nature. The model reproduces qualitatively, and semi-quantitatively, in a self-consistent manner, some the behaviors of the formation and time-evolution of discrete arcs. These include the narrowness of arcs; electric fields extending parallel outward from the arcs; and fast (plasma) flows in the region of discrete arcs. Large-scale models--due to inevitable limitations of computational resources--need to make large-scale averages of computed properties. In regions of active small-scale structure, significant under-representation of the Joule heating occurs. It has been shown that the under-representation of the Joule heating in the region of active aurora can be as large as a factor of 8. This work includes a computer-based study of a quantitative approximation of this underrepresentation of the Joule heating by global, large-scale models and experimental observations.

Book excerpt: In this work, processes which couple the Earth's magnetosphere and ionosphere are examined using observations of aurora from ground-based imaging, in situ electron measurements, and electron transport modeling. The coupling of these regions relies heavily on the energy transport between the two and the ionospheric conductances, which regulate the location and magnitude of the transport. The combination of the datasets described are used to derive the conductances and electron energy populations at the upper boundary of the ionosphere. These values are constrained using error analysis of the observation and measurement techniques and made available to the global magnetosphere modeling community for inclusion as boundary conditions at the magnetosphere and ionosphere coupling region. A comparative study of the active aurora and incident electron distributions was conducted using ground-based measurements and in-situ sounding rocket data. Three narrow-field (47 degree field-of-view) electron-multiplying charge-coupled device (EMCCD) imagers were located at Venetie, AK which took high spatio-temporal resolution measurements of the aurora using different wavelength filters (427.8 nm, 557.7 nm, and 844.6 nm). The measured emission line ratios were combined with atmospheric modeling in order to predict the total electron energy flux and characteristic electron energy incident on the atmosphere. These predictions were compared with in-situ measurements made by the Ground-to-Rocket Electrodynamics-Electrons Correlative Experiment (GREECE) sounding rocket launched in early 2014. The GREECE particle instruments were modeled using a ray-tracing program, SIMION, in order to predict the instrument responses for different incident particles. Each instrument model was compared with data taken in the lab in order to compare and update the models appropriately. A rocket emulation system was constructed for lab testing prior to and during instrument integration into the rocket and used throughout the project to test instrument response and output. EMCCD imagers were calibrated using known light sources in order to find the imager response at each pixel prior to and during deployment. Electron transport models were modified to use the most recent versions of empirical atmospheric models and chemical reaction rates. The electron transport models showed less than 20% and 50% error for intensity measurements 10 degrees and 20 degrees from magnetic zenith, respectively. An inversion technique was developed in order to derive the characteristics of the in situ electron populations using only the spectral ground-based imaging. The electron populations and atmospheric conductances were characterized, using the inversion technique and the modified Robinson relation, during the St. Patrick's Day storm on 18 March 2015. Discrete arcs contained the most energetic electrons and highest conductances, followed by pulsating aurora and then diffuse aurora. These techniques can be used to constrain the electrons and ionospheric conductances responsible for different types of aurora using imaging data taken over long time periods, when in situ measurements are unavailable.

But the Earth is unique among planets because its atmosphere, magnetic eld, and rotation rates are each signi cant, though not dominant, players in the formation of its magnetosphere and its reaction to solar-wind inputs. An intriguing fact is that no matter what the time scale of solar-wind variations, the Earth’s response has a de nite pattern lasting a few hours. Known as a magnetospheric substorm, the response involves a build-up, a crash, and a recovery. The build-up (known as the growth phase) occurs because of an interlinking of the geom- netic eld and the solar-wind magnetic eld known as magnetic reconnection, which leads to storage of increasing amounts of magnetic energy and stress in the tail of the mag- tosphere and lasts about a half hour. The crash (known as the expansion phase) occurs when the increased magnetic energy and stresses are impulsively relieved, the current system that supports the stretched out magnetic tail is diverted into the ionosphere, and bright, dynamic displays of the aurora appear in the upper atmosphere. The expansion and subsequent rec- ery phases result from a second magnetic reconnection event that decouples the solar-wind and geomagnetic elds.
