Aulus encouraged Sophi-An to follow a nontraditional path in life after she received a master’s degree in nursing. Aulus was shocked when his daughter told him that she was going to travel abroad to provide medical care to people in a country that was torn apart by civil war. Even though he didn’t approve of her decision, Aulus let Sophi-An go. Once in country, Sophi-An cared for the victims of the conflict between the army and the rebels. Sophi-An was kidnapped and tortured by the rebels. Throughout her ordeal, Sophi-An relied on her faith in God, the help of others, and her wits and smarts to survive. As she recounted her story, she realized that there are great people everywhere, even in hell.

Book excerpt: Aulus is committed to fulfilling his promise to his late mother, Martine, by searching for his twin brother who was separated from him through adoption. In his quest, Aulus takes on a challenging project in a foreign country to dismantle armed gangs. Although his wife, Sophie, expresses concern for his safety, their daughter, Sophi-Angelique (nicknamed Sophi-An), eagerly joins her father, having survived a kidnapping and near-death experience during her time as a nurse with Médecins Sans Frontières in that same country. Unbeknownst to Aulus, the gangs have been monitoring his activities closely, leading to his betrayal and subsequent kidnapping with the assistance of a corrupt police chief. However, he manages to escape thanks to a man who bears a striking resemblance to his twin brother, Sauul, who had created an advanced spy network for the gangs to track Aulus and his team. He is soon revealed to be his long-lost sibling through a DNA test. Together, Aulus and Sauul devise a cutting-edge, high-tech anti-gang Artificial Intelligent system with the objective to systematically dismantle the gang networks. Their mission takes an unexpected turn when they orchestrate a cyber-attack inspired by Robin Hood, forcefully seizing the stolen money amassed by politicians, gangs, and their associates. In a remarkable turn of events, they managed to return a staggering $58.5 billion back to the country. The reclaimed funds are then prioritized for significant improvements in crucial sectors, such as agriculture, education, healthcare, infrastructure, the judicial system, and overall security. Aulus concluded that despite of the horrifying and dehumanizing state of security in that country, there will inevitably be some positive outcomes arising from it.

The Roman North Cotswolds, Summer AD 370 In the dying years of Roman Britain’s golden age, a great villa stands in a sheltered coomb near a vineyard on the western edge of the hills. Canio now owns this villa estate, bought with illicitly acquired gold. And with the villa came his mistress, the beautiful and enigmatic Trifosa. Antoninus has just inherited magnificent Villa Censorini, where he and Trifosa once lived when they were children (and then lovers?). Now returned after seven traumatic years in the army, he is about to host a splendid homecoming party. Canio and Trifosa are both invited. And then, riding slowly up the coomb out of the golden light of the setting sun, comes the government agent Macrinius Lunaris – and walking unseen beside him is the daemon Thanatos, whom the Greeks knew as the bringer of death...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise Broadview anthology of primary source materials is unique in its focus on Romantic literature and the ways in which the period itself was characterized by wide-ranging, self-conscious debates about the meaning of literature. It includes materials that are not available in other Romantic literature anthologies. The anthology is organized into thirteen sections that highlight the intensity and sophistication with which a variety of related literary issues were debated in the Romantic period. These debates posed fundamental questions about the very nature of literature as a cultural phenomenon, the extent and role of the reading public, literature’s relation to the sciences and the aesthetic, the influence of contemporary commercial pressures, and the impact of perceived excesses in consumer fashions. The anthology foregrounds the ways that these literary debates converged with broader social and political controversies such as the French Revolution, the struggle for women’s rights, colonialism, and the anti-slave trade campaign. This anthology includes an impressive range of writings from the period (including literary criticism and philosophical, political, scientific, and travel writing) which embodies the collection’s broad approach to Romantic literature. Both lesser-known and more canonical writings are included, and the selections are organized by topic in such a way as to dramatize the debates and exchanges which characterize the Romantic period.

Book excerpt: Ephesus (Ephesos): An Abbreviated History from Androclus to Constantine XI. The reader is provided with what is known about the city of Ephesus, its people, and its place within the larger framework of ancient and medieval Mediterranean history. Beginning with the Ionian migration and the founding of Ephesus on the west coast of Asia Minor around 1050 B.C., the story moves quickly through periods when the city was ruled successively by local tyrants, Persian kings and satraps, Athenian and Spartan generals, Antigonid, Ptolemaic and Seleucid kings, Roman emperors and Pergamene dynasts, Byzantine emperors and Greek patriarchs, Arab caliphs, Latin popes and crusaders, Seljuk and Beylik Turks, Mongols, and ending with the conquest by the Ottoman Turks in A.D. 1453. Throughout emphasis has been placed on the lives of Ephesian individuals and groups, and their respective contributions to architecture, law, literature, painting, medicine, philosophy, poetry, politics, religion and sculpture, often at times characterized by political and territorial power struggles and ecclesiastical doctrinal controversies and disagreements. The history of Ephesus is of ongoing interest to historians, archaeologists and students of classical literature, science, religion and philosophy, as well as to amateurs and laymen who are keenly interested in Mediterranian antiquity. It is documented with excerpts, biographical references, explanatory footnotes and a few illustrations.
