Book Synopsis Etymological Dictionary of Egyptian, Volume 2 by : Gábor Takács
Download or read book Etymological Dictionary of Egyptian, Volume 2 written by Gábor Takács and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multi-volume Etymological Dictionary of Egyptian by Gábor Takács "promises to open a new chapter in Egyptian and Afro-Asiatic comparative lingustics" (A. Dolgopolsky, in Israel Oriental Studies). The amount of material offered, the extensive treatment of scholarly discussions on each item, and the insights into the connections of Egyptian and the related Afro-Asiatic (Semito-Hamitic) languages, including many new lexical parallels, will make it an indispensable tool for comparative purposes and an unchallenged starting point for every linguist in the field. This second volume is in fact the first volume of the very etymological dictionary. It comprises the Egyptian words with initial b-, p-, and f-. The reader will find the etymological entries even more detailed than those of the introductory volume, due to the full retrospective presentation of all etymologies proposed since A. Erman's time, and thanks to an extremely detailed discussion of all possible relevant data even on the less known Afro-Asiatic cognates to the Egyptian roots.

Book Synopsis A Fulfulde (Maasina) - English - French Lexicon by : Donald W. Osborn
Download or read book A Fulfulde (Maasina) - English - French Lexicon written by Donald W. Osborn and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lexicon brings together lexical material from a wide range of published and non-published sources to create an extensive compilation of the vocabulary of Fulfulde as it is spoken in that part of central Mali known as Masina (in Fulfulde, Maasina). The Lexicon is intended primarily for non-Fulfulde speakers who are learning the language at the intermediate or advanced levels and who need access to a comprehensive reference source on Fulfulde vocabulary. Scholars, development workers, and others whose research or fieldwork involves use of the Fulfulde of Masina may find it helpful as well in clarifying nuances of meaning and standardized spelling for the less familiar terms they might encounter. It is also intended that the present work, beyond the matter of organizing vocabulary, will contribute significantly to the expanding lexicographical and linguistic investigations of Fulfulde.

Book Synopsis Performance in the Texts of Mallarmé by : Mary Lewis Shaw
Download or read book Performance in the Texts of Mallarmé written by Mary Lewis Shaw and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1992-09-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance in the Texts of Mallarmé offers a new theory of performance in the poetic and critical texts of Stephane Mallarmé, a theory challenging the prevailing interpretation of his work as epitomizing literary purism and art for art's sake. Following an analytical presentation of the concepts of ritual and performance generally applied, Mary Shaw shows that Mallarmé perceived music, dance, and theater as ideal languages of the body and therefore as ideal forms of ritual through which to supplement and celebrate poetic texts. She focuses on previously unexplored references to supplementary, extratextual performances in four of Mallarmé's major poetic texts—Herodiade, L'après-midi d'un faune, Igitur, and Un coup de des—revealing the consistent formal expression of his original conception of literature's relationship to the performing arts. Shaw then discusses Mallarmé's monumental project, Le Livre, a metaphysical book designed to be performed in a series of ritual celebrations. She analyzes and describes the intrinsic structure and contents of this unfinished work as the fullest realization of the text-performance relationship elaborated throughout Mallarmé's corpus. Shaw offers Le Livre as a prototype of avant-garde performance, drawing important parallels between Mallarmé's literary experimentation and crucial developments in twentieth-century arts.

Book Synopsis Haitian laughter by : Georges Anglade
Download or read book Haitian laughter written by Georges Anglade and published by Educa Vision Inc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Mosaic of Ninety Miniatures in French and English, translated from the French by Anne Pease McConnell. Haitian Laughter is constructed around the lodyans, a narrative genre that has blossomed in Haiti as an art of miniatures. The substantial reduction in scale that presides over their creation allows only the significant features to remain, like a medieval illumination, a Japanese bonsai, or simply a small sized map of an immense territory. This makes each miniature a "dwarf sized saga," which lets us glimpse the larger dimension of the original of which it is a reduced model. Bilingual, French and English.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this classic tale, Richard Kim paints seven vivid scenes from a boyhood and early adolescence in Korea at the height of the Japanese occupation, 1932 to 1945. Taking its title from the grim fact that the occupiers forced the Koreans to renounce their own names and adopt Japanese names instead, the book follows one Korean family through the Japanese occupation to the surrender of the Japanese empire. Lost Names is at once a loving memory of family and a vivid portrayal of life in a time of anguish.

Book Synopsis Collected Poems and Other Verse by : Stéphane Mallarmé
Download or read book Collected Poems and Other Verse written by Stéphane Mallarmé and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-11-13 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'sense too definite cancels your indistinct literature' Stéphane Mallarmé was the most radically innovative of nineteenth-century poets. His writings, with their richly sensuous texture and air of slyly intangible mystery, perplexed or outraged many early readers; yet no writer has more profoundly influenced the course of modern poetry - in English as well as in French. In both form and content, his poems created new ways of conveying existential doubt, fragmentation, and discontinuity. This is the fullest collection of Mallarmé's poetry ever published in English, and the only edition in any language that presents his Poésies in the last arrangement known to have been approved by the author. Apart from verse, it includes all the prose poems and the unique, unclassifiable Un Coup de dés... (A Dice Throw...). The lucid, wide-ranging introduction and invaluable notes help an understanding of this astonishing poet's work. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
