Book excerpt: The Social Area Analysis of Eshref Shevky was applied to empirical data which reflected attitudes of Kansas City, Missouri residents toward their local governments and schools. Areas of the city were measured and categorized according to the social characteristics of respondents. Each area had three disignations--segregation, urbanization and social rank. Segregated areas had a majority population of blacks while non-segregated areas had a majority population of whites. Highly urbanized areas were comprised of more working women, fewer single family dwelling units and proportionately fewer children than were areas of average or low urbanization. And high social rank areas incorporated fewer blue collar workers, and more heads of households with eight or more years of formal education than did middle or low social rank areas. The expressed attitudes of these respondents were associated with the preceeding measurements of particular social characteristics. Social rank and segregation were expected to share a high association with overall satisfaction-dissatisfaction to local government and schools; and urbanization was expected to share a moderate to low association with this overall satisfaction-dissatisfaction. Random respondents from non-segregated high social rank areas were hypothesized to express approving attitudes toward local government and schools. Interviewees from a segregated high social rank area or a non-segregated middle social rank area were hypothesized to express moderately approving attitudes. The highest rates of disapproval were hypothesized to come from fegregated middle social rank respondents. And both segregated and non-segregated low social rank individuals were hypothesized to be moderately diapproving in their expressed attitudes. The highest rate of approval for both local government and schools was not exhibited by respondents from white high social rank areas, but from low social rank interviewees. This may possibly be accounted for by a small sampling of low social rank individuals. White high social rank individuals were more moderate than approving in their attitudes. Black high social rank and white middle social rank respondents were found to express higher rates of dissatisfaction than had been expected for either group. And disfavorable attitudes among black middle social rank respondents were just as prevalent as they had been hypothesized to be. Attitudes were not found to have stringent social ecologies. Many of the empirical variations were found to be justifiable through application of Amitai Etzioni's macrosociological cybernetic model which recognizes that persons possess power not only as classes, but also as collectivities. And the latter can be formed according to common social goals, interests, etc., often irrespective of class lines.
