Book excerpt: The primary focus of this study is to explore the underlying reasons for the negative attitudes that mental health professionals harbor toward clients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Of main concern is a problem that involves a lack of desire on the part of the clinicians to treat individuals with an Axis II diagnosis, specifically Borderline Personality Disorder. Much of this attitude can be attributed to the fact that clients presenting with symptoms of BPD exhibit extremely destructive personality characteristics that cause others to distance themselves.

Book excerpt: Given the intense and destructive behaviors that individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) often engage in, mental health treatment providers tend to be reluctant to work with this population. Current research suggests that mental health providers maintain negative attitudes toward treating the BPD population. According to McMain and Wiebe (2013), a therapist's negative reactions toward BPD patients are often related to the therapist's own personality traits. Marsha Linehan, the founder of dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), identified specific characteristics of treatment providers necessary to successfully treat BPD patients, one of which is tolerance for ambiguity. As such, this dissertation explores the relationship between treatment providers' attitudes toward patients diagnosed with BPD and tolerance for ambiguity. Moreover, this dissertation will explore the relationship between treatment providers' attitudes toward patients diagnosed with BPD and their ability to regulate emotions. Through surveying a widespread sample of mental health treatment providers, including psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, social workers, and practicum students, this dissertation will look to determine if a treatment provider's tolerance for ambiguity and emotion regulation skills predict their attitudes toward treating BPD patients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an ideal resource for general readers who want a clear understanding of people suffering with chaotic emotions, and for clinicians treating patients for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). The patterns of behavior of those with borderline personality disorder (BPD) are often frustrating and mystifying to both clinicians and family members, despite several decades of study and research on this form of distress. Borderline Personality Disorder: New Perspectives on a Stigmatizing and Overused Diagnosis presents a thorough critical and historical review of the diagnosis of BPD and explores—through academic and clinical narratives—the different processes that occur in borderline behavior patterns. The authors offer new perspectives that emphasize the whole person rather than a diagnosis, addressing the emotional storms and mood instability of BPD, providing guidance on managing emotional chaos in the therapeutic relationship, and explaining how to use one's own feelings as a clinical tool. Their approach gives an intimate experiential feel for the interpersonal processes that occur in psychotherapy for both the patient and therapist. The result: readers will better understand who the person behind the diagnosis is, and comprehend what it really feels like to be someone struggling with these difficult interpersonal patterns.

Book excerpt: This research focused on attitudes of mental health clinicians toward Borderline Personality Disorder patients. The results indicate that greater awareness among the clinicians is needed regarding the harm the negative attitudes toward this group of mental health clients can cause. Majority of clinicians, regardless of their age, gender, years of experience, or specialty were willing to treat BPD patients. The responses were more varied with regard to stereotyping patients, feeling intentionally manipulated, or believing that BPD patients can achieve a good quality life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, there has been a burgeoning of interest in understanding and treating borderline personality disorder, a disorder characterized by extreme emotional reactivity, impulsivity and serious interpersonal difficulties resulting in frequent loss of relationships. Individuals with borderline personality disorder comprise a substantial proportion of the psychiatric outpatient population, are often seen in emergency rooms and have major functional impairment (e.g. unemployment). Suicide occurs in 3-9% of the population. Furthermore, non-suicidal self injury (e.g. cutting without the intent to die), eating disorders and substance abuse are frequently seen in the context of borderline personality disorder. Not only do the individuals with the disorder suffer , their family members also experience distress and can feel burdened and overwhelmed. Once thought to be nonexistent or a 'grab bag' diagnosis, borderline personality disorder is now understood as a significant emotional disorder with its own neurobiological and psychosocial correlates. At the same time, the disorder is still poorly understood and stigmatized with limited resources available to the novice clinician and mental health professional trainees (e.g. psychiatry residents, psychology doctoral students, social work students). The aim of this primer on borderline personality disorder is to fill this void and provide an accessible, easy-to-use , clinically-oriented, evidenced-based guide for early stage clinicians. We present the most up to data about borderline personality disorder by leading experts in the field in a format accessible to trainees and professionals working with individuals with borderline personality disorder and their family members. The volume is comprehensive and covers the etiology of BPD, its clinical presentation and co-morbid disorders, genetics and neurobiology of BPD, effective treatment of BPD, the role of advocacy and special subpopulations (e.g.forensic)in the clinical management of BPD.
