Book excerpt: Federal mandates over the last forty years have required that school districts educate all students in the least restrictive environment. For many school districts, that meant moving to an inclusion and co-teaching model of service delivery for students with disabilities. The purpose of this study was to explore the skills and attributes co-teachers felt were necessary to a positive co-teaching relationship. In addition, study participants shared their knowledge and use of the six styles of co-teaching, as defined by Friend & Cook (2010). The literature review included articles identifying effective co-reaching practices, studies analyzing student learning in co-taught environments, and success and limitations of the co-teaching method. Results and conclusions from the study indicate that teachers in the surveyed district find con-teaching to be a positive experience that most would volunteer for again. Social and academic benefits for both general education students and student with disabilities were perceived by survey respondents. Futhermore, areas of further research were identified, including : the development of administrative support, relationship building between co-teachers, and training within the six identified models of co-teaching.

Book excerpt: The Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) component of IDEIA 2004, NCLB requirements, and research indicating increased achievement for students with disabilities in the general education environment, have led to the inclusion of students with disabilities into the general education classroom and the use of co-teaching model is increasing throughout the United States. Research indicates that, for inclusion to be successful, administrators and general education teachers need to receive adequate training in special education, supports, and resources to implement successful integration and inclusion of students with disabilities in the general education setting (Ainscow, 2000; Burton & Pace, 2009; Cox, 2008; Praisner, 2003; Villa, Thousand, Meyers, & Nevin, 1996). Co- teaching has shown to be an effective model of inclusion that can support the requirements of NCLB and IDEIA (Bryant-Davis, Dieker, Pearl, & Kirkpatrick, 2012; Friend, 2008; Villa et al., 1996). The purpose of this single case study was to determine the fundamental attitudes, practices, relationships, structures, programs, and supports that contribute to successful co-teaching partnerships in a high school setting. This study used a survey, classroom observations, and semi-structured interviews to gather data to determine what characteristics contribute to successful co-teaching. This case study utilized purposeful case sampling. Participants were chosen from one of the highest performing high schools in a large urban school district in Southern California. The research showed that small schools that incorporate small group work with consistently scheduled meetings for collaboration foster community and contributes to the success of co-teaching. Curriculum that lends itself to small group work is a factor in successful co-teaching. Additionally, having adequate materials, supplies, and access to the latest technology supports successful co-teaching program. Furthermore, special educators staying with students for 4 years was found to be beneficial for both general and special education students and co-teaching partnerships. Experience and time in a co-teaching partnership was shown to be a factor in the success of the co-teaching model. Overall, the co-teachers attitudes were positive and the research showed that all of the teachers worked well together, had respect for the special educators, and all but one felt that co-teaching had improved their teaching practice. Respect and trust were shown to be the most important aspects for a successful co-teaching partnership. Similar to the research for the past 40 years, all the co-teachers requested more training on co-teaching and the general educators wanted more training on special education strategies and co-teaching.

Book excerpt: With current federal mandates in place, school districts have faced challenges in ensuring all students receive access to the general education curriculum (Cook, Chamberlain, Friend & Shamberger, 2010; Murawski & Dieker, 2013). To aid in alleviating requirements of federal mandates, many school districts have implemented the inclusion model of co-teaching to ensure special educations students are receiving access to the general education curriculum at least 80% of their school day (Friend, 2018; Murawski & Dieker, 2013). However, co-teaching has many misconceptions, specifically regarding teacher and administrator attitudes (Cook et al., 2010; Friend, 2018; Harris, 2014; Murawski & Dieker, 2013). This embedded mixed methods study investigated and explored attitudes of stakeholders regarding co-teaching. Co-teaching is multi-faceted and therefore is recommended to be implemented incrementally to address any misconceptions tied to the inclusion model. The study explored the dimensions of co-teaching tied to the components of cognitive, behavioral and affective attitude (Boehner & Schwartz, 2001; Breckler, 1984). The embedded mixed methods study addressed seven research questions; five quantitative and two qualitative. During the quantitative phase, a questionnaire was administered to all building level administration, guidance counselors and teachers in grades 6-12 within a school district in the Northeast. The quantitative survey was distributed to investigate stakeholder attitudes regarding co-teaching. In the qualitative phase, four interviews were conducted to explore and interpret the attitudes’ of stakeholders in regards to the data from the quantitative survey. The findings from this embedded mixed methods study included the need for administrative support, continuous professional development, intentionality behind scheduling, and understanding the instructional model to effectively benefit all students. The results from this study may benefit school leaders, guidance counselors, and teachers in identifying the supports needed to create an effective co-teaching model, which in turn may lead to student academic success and may help close the achievement gap that exists between special education students and general education students.
