Book excerpt: This study examined the attitudes toward abortion in pre-medicine student and what influences, if any, current medical school policies and practices on abortion training have on their decision to apply, or pursue a medical career. It explored the differences between routine (mandatory barring religious or moral objection), and elective (opt out option) training on abortion procedures, and whether or not pre-medicine students plan to participate in either. Participants were taken from James Madison University athletic training, diet, health science, and health services administration pre-medicine concentrations. Willing participants were surveyed on their attitudes toward abortion. It was determined that most students do not base their decision to apply to medical school on the school's current policies on abortion training. This research will provide valuable information regarding abortion training in medical schools and what influences, if any, it has on students' decision to apply.

This book was released on 2018-06-24 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abortion is a legal medical procedure that has been provided to millions of American women. Since the Institute of Medicine first reviewed the health implications of national legalized abortion in 1975, there has been a plethora of related scientific research, including well-designed randomized clinical trials, systematic reviews, and epidemiological studies examining abortion care. This research has focused on examining the relative safety of abortion methods and the appropriateness of methods for different clinical circumstances. With this growing body of research, earlier abortion methods have been refined, discontinued, and new approaches have been developed. The Safety and Quality of Abortion Care in the United States offers a comprehensive review of the current state of the science related to the provision of safe, high-quality abortion services in the United States. This report considers 8 research questions and presents conclusions, including gaps in research.
Book Synopsis Safe Abortion Care by : Tarekegn Asmamaw
Download or read book Safe Abortion Care written by Tarekegn Asmamaw and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unsafe abortion has been recognized as an important public health problem, especially in developing countries, contributing to the high maternal mortality rate. Unsafe abortion accounted for 14% of all maternal deaths in sub-Saharan Africa, where half of the world maternal deaths occurred. According to the World Health Organization, Ethiopia has the fifth largest number of maternal deaths. Women commonly report encountering abusive treatment from health workers who disapprove of their desire for safe abortion. Health professionals' negative attitudes might be one the obstacle for the availability of safe abortion services. The important role of Nurses and other health professionals play an important role to identifying, informing, preparing, and supporting the abortion patient; however, there is little known and scarce study about the personal and professional attitudes and intension especially in health science students. So this book may fill the gap and may be one input for who need research on this issue or help to consider the curriculum in relation to safe abortion issue particularly in nursing field. Besides these, the book can provide information for clinical policy makers

Book Synopsis Do Public Attitudes Toward Abortion Influence Attitudes Toward Family Planning? Findings from a Survey of Americans by :
Download or read book Do Public Attitudes Toward Abortion Influence Attitudes Toward Family Planning? Findings from a Survey of Americans written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1965 the United States has provided funds and technical assistance for voluntary family planning programs overseas. In 1970, a comparable program, Title X of the Public Health Services Act, was created for low-income and disadvantaged women in this country. Relatively noncontroversial in the early years of their existence, these programs in recent years have become linked to the emotionally charged debate over abortion. Our interviews in 1997 with legislative directors suggested that congressional swing voters who were opposed to abortion were less likely to support U.S. government funding for international family planning. These members felt that this view reflected their constituents' attitudes as well. How closely do public attitudes mirror these impressions? To address this question, RAND's Population Matter's program asked a nationally representative sample of 1,500 Americans about their views on family planning and on abortion. The questions were part of a broader survey of public attitudes about global population trends and issues. The survey results suggest that attitudes toward abortion exert only a minor influence in shaping the American public's attitude toward family planning.

Book Synopsis Pro-life Progressivism by : Lauren Gilmore
Download or read book Pro-life Progressivism written by Lauren Gilmore and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an extensive body of literature exploring the way in which a variety of factors affect a person's attitudes towards abortion. There is significantly less research, however, on the way in which a person's attitude towards abortion affects their attitudes towards other issues. At the same time, there is evidence to suggest that a growing number of people are using their "pro-life" stance on abortion to influence their stance on other issues that revolve around the quality and sustenance of life, and that Generation Y may be more liberal than previous generations on most, if not all, issues. This research seeks to explore the extent to which "pro-life progressivism" may have affected Generation Y with two sets of logistic regression analysis. The first analysis looks exclusively at members of Generation Y, and explores the effect of a person's attitudes toward abortion on their attitudes towards government spending on childcare, assistance to the poor, and healthcare. This is to see if there is a difference between pro-life and pro-choice members of Generation Y in the way they approach other issues relating to the quality and sustenance of life. The second analysis compares pro-life members of Generation Y to older cohorts. The results show that attitudes towards abortion among members of Generation Y had no effect on their attitudes towards childcare and healthcare. Furthermore, the attitudes of pro-life members of Generation Y were statistically no different from older cohorts, with the exception of members of the Silent Generation on the issue of government assistance to healthcare. Further research, particularly of the qualitative nature, is suggested to delve more deeply into this research question.

Download or read book Scarlet A written by Katie Watson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the NCTE George Orwell Award for Distinguished Contribution to Honesty and Clarity in Public Language Although Roe v. Wade identified abortion as a constitutional right in1973, it still bears stigma--a proverbial scarlet A. Millions of Americans have participated in or benefited from an abortion, but few want to reveal that they have done so. Approximately one in five pregnancies in the US ends in abortion. Why is something so common, which has been legal so long, still a source of shame and secrecy? Why is it so regularly debated by politicians, and so seldom divulged from friend to friend? This book explores the personal stigma that prevents many from sharing their abortion experiences with friends and family in private conversation, and the structural stigma that keeps it that way. In public discussion, both proponents and opponents of abortion's legality tend to focus on extraordinary cases. This tendency keeps the national debate polarized and contentious, and keeps our focus on the cases that occur the least. Professor Katie Watson focuses instead on the cases that happen the most, which she calls "ordinary abortion." Scarlet A gives the reflective reader a more accurate impression of what the majority of American abortion practice really looks like. It explains how our silence around private experience has distorted public opinion, and how including both ordinary abortion and abortion ethics could make our public exchanges more fruitful. In Scarlet A, Watson wisely and respectfully navigates one of the most divisive topics in contemporary life. This book explains the law of abortion, challenges the toxic politics that make it a public football and private secret, offers tools for more productive private exchanges, and leads the way to a more robust public discussion of abortion ethics. Scarlet A combines storytelling and statistics to bring the story of ordinary abortion out of the shadows, painting a rich, rarely seen picture of how patients and doctors currently think and act, and ultimately inviting readers to tell their own stories and draw their own conclusions. The paperback edition includes a new preface by the author addressing new cultural developments in abortion discourse and new legal threats to reproductive rights, and updated statistics throughout.
