In western society this has been a subject of secrecy and taboo. Throughout our history homosexuals have been persecuted and forced to hide their sexual identity. The effects of this on an individual should be something of concern to professionals in the mental health field. While in the past there has been little knowledge of homosexuality, and no self-expression on the part of homosexuals, there has, in recent years, been growing information and expression. The effect of this change on mental health workers is what this paper will examine. An historical survey will present the forces which shaped the current attitude of the mental health profession about homosexuality. I will present a general examination of the social ideology toward homosexuality in western society. I will also review the history of those homosexuals who have banded together for companionship, reform, and protest. This will be a context against which I will examine the attitudes of a specific group of people who care for the mentally ill--nurses and aides at a state mental hospital. The questionnaire I used to examine their attitudes surveys a broad range of possible attitudes about homosexuality. The responses will demonstrate what changes have occurred in society's attitudes toward homosexuality. It will show, specifically, what the attitudes are of those who care for economically disadvantaged, severely disturbed homosexuals.

Book excerpt: The sexual orientation of lesbians is just one factor in their lives, yet providers of healthcare often assume everyone is heterosexual and counsel their clients accordingly. This book contains a series of scientific investigations by leading authorities in the field into multiple problems lesbians face when seeking healthcare. Should lesbians disclose their sexual orientation? Can it be kept of the record? Where can lesbians go if they feel unable to trust traditional medicine and what is the history of the scientific and medical community towards lesbians? How are lesbians viewed by college students today? Lesbians are treated in this book as women first; their sexual orientation is just one factor in their lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's health, as a field of study, is a developing discipline. Health theories in general have been based on studies of men. However, in recent years, more attention has shifted to women's health, realizing the disparities between men and women in relation to their health. During the last two decades, a similar shift has occurred for a group of womenâ€"lesbian womenâ€"to further identify and specify their health needs. Over the past decade, lesbians have organized to call for attention to the health issues of this community, resulting in several federally funded research initiatives. This book offers a comprehensive view of what is known about lesbian health needs and what questions need further investigation, including: How do we define who is lesbian? Are there unique health issues for lesbians? Are lesbians at higher or lower risk for such health problems as AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, breast cancer, mental disorders, and substance abuse? How does homophobia affect lesbian health and the funding of research on lesbian health? How do lesbian health needs fit into the health care system and the larger society? What risk and protective factors shape the physical and mental health of lesbians? The book discusses how to determine which questions to ask about sexual orientation, the need to obtain information without violating privacy, the importance of considering racial and ethnic diversity in the study of lesbians, strategies for exchanging information among researchers and disseminating findings to the public, and mechanisms for supporting greater numbers of researchers. Lesbian Health takes a frank look at the political pressures, community attitudes, and professional concerns uniquely affecting the study of lesbian health issues. The book explores many other issues including the potential for transferring findings in this field to other population groups, including other rare populations and women in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get a full understanding of lesbian mental health concerns! Mental Health Issues for Sexual Minority Women: Redefining Women's Mental Health presents much-needed research on sexual orientation and sexual minority populations missing from most mental health studies. This unique book identifies three areas of concern voiced in a 1999 Institute of Medicine report on lesbian health: whether lesbians are at a higher risk of mental health problems; the need for a better understanding of lesbian orientation and diversity in the lesbian population; and the need to eliminate barriers to mental health care services for lesbians. Mental Health Issues for Sexual Minority Women addresses those concerns with theoretical and empirical work that represents a broad range of disciplines and cultures. Mental Health Issues for Sexual Minority Women covers a unique and diverse range of topics missing from most books on lesbian health. The book includes original research on issues such as: body image and attitudes toward eating and dieting relationship satisfaction and conflicts substance use and sexual victimization risk factors for psychological distress among African-American lesbians and much more! Mental Health Issues for Sexual Minority Women also includes reviews of literature on traumatic victimization, internalized homophobia, and mental health issues for lesbians with physical disabilities. This groundbreaking book is a unique resource for health researchers, clinicians, academics, and students in any health profession, including nursing, medicine, public health, social work, psychology, and sociology.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study is (1) to obtain objective measures of nurses' empathy levels and their attitude toward lesbianism; and (2) to correlate nurses' empathy scores with their attitudes toward lesbianism. The rational for conducting this study is based on the need for study of attitudes of professionals toward homosexuality and its relationship to generalized empathy. This investigation surveyed twenty-five non-psychiatric registered nurses in a 250 bed non-profit community-hospital. Two questionnaires were used: (1) La Monica's Empathy Construct Scale to measure empathy toward clients in general, and (2) Attitudes toward Homosexuality-Scale-Female, to measure attitudes toward lesbianism. Statistical analysis of the data obtained from the two questionnaires was performed using Pearson's coefficient of correlation. The results found no correlation between empathy and attitudes toward lesbianism. The results were r=.381 and p=-.199. In analysis of variance, insignificant correlation was found between empathy and attitude toward lesbianism in any of the variables tested. Given the lack of randomization in the selection of the subjects, the use of a volunteer sample, and the small sample size from only one hospital, the results cannot be generalized beyond the sample. It is recommended that a larger sample be used in future studies, that subjects be randomly selected, and that data collection be conducted in more than one hospital. Recommendations for future studies are: (1) Investigate if a workshop on female homosexuality would alter or change nurses' empathy or attitude scores toward lesbianism, (2.) investigate the correlation between sex-roles and attitudes toward lesbianism and empathy in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental to understanding human sexual expression is reliable and valid measurement and assessment. Many instruments have been developed to measure a myriad of sexuality-related states, traits, behaviors, and outcomes. Few are easily accessible and the information is limited concerning appropriate use and psychometric properties. In Handbook of Sexuality-Related Measures, more than 200 instruments are reproduced, accompanied by the necessary information for their use in research, as well as educational and clinical settings. Measures relating to more than 50 topics are included. Examples are abortion, aging, arousal, general and specific attitudes and behavior, contraception, dysfunctions, education, experience, gender identity, homosexuality, ideology, jealousy, knowledge, masturbation, orgasm, rape, and sexually transmitted diseases. Each chapter describes the development and appropriate use of each instrument, giving information on timing, scoring, and interpretation. Reliability and validity data are, summarized and completely referenced. Nearly all articles include the entire instrument; others provide illustrative content from the instrument and give all necessary information to obtain the instrument.
