Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to investigate the prevalence of mathematics anxiety among freshman Algebra I students in an urban, Midwestern high school, and (b) to find out if a pre-quiz and quiz intervention could reduce mathematics anxiety in one specific class. The Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale for Adolescents (MARS-A) was the primary quantitative data collection instrument. Qualitative data were collected using the Mathematicsitude Survey, student reflections, and interviews. Findings from the MARS-A showed that 50% of students experienced a significant amount of mathematics anxiety, particularly associated with test-taking. However, there was a large amount of variation among scores. In the treatment class, a strategy of pre-quiz followed by the same or similar quiz the following day was used to build student confidence and thereby lessen anxiety. The strategy did not meet this objective as many students reported greater anxiety levels after the intervention than before. Qualitative probing did show that in some isolated cases the strategy worked very well.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT : In every stage of life, people need to use mathematics in daily life situations, in work areas or to contribute to the development of other sciences. Therefore, the quality of mathematics education process is very important for students to learn enough mathematics. However, students face with learning difficulties and low achievement results due to psychological variables such as attitudes and anxiety towards mathematics, during this process. The present study was conducted in order to find out the eighth grade middle school students' nature of attitudes towards mathematics and their levels of mathematics anxiety in urban and rural schools of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Statistical analyses were performed to investigate if there were any significant relationships among the students' attitudes and mathematical achievement, the students' anxiety levels and achievement, and the students' attitudes and anxiety levels. Moreover, the effects of gender and school location differences on these relationships were explored. In addition, the students' attitudes, anxiety levels, and mathematical achievements were compared with respect to gender and school location in order to figure out any significant differences between these variables. Finally, a regression analysis was performed in order to figure out if the attitudes and anxiety of students towards mathematics were significant predictors of mathematical achievement when gender and school location are controlled. The study was carried out in an urban middle school in the Famagusta district and a rural school in the Yeni Iskele district, in the TRNC. A quantitative research design with correlational and comparative research methods was used. In order to collect data, a personal information questionnaire and two scales (Mathematics Attitude Scale and Mathematics Anxiety Scale) were administered to each participant. The total number of participants was 188 for the study. Bivariate correlation results indicated significant relationships between the students' attitudes and achievement, anxiety levels and achievement, and attitudes and anxiety levels with respect to gender and the location of schools. On the other hand, t-test results revealed significant differences in students' attitudes, and mathematical achievements with respect to gender and school location. However, no significant differences were found between the students' anxiety levels with respect to gender and school location; and the students' attitudes, anxiety levels and mathematical achievement with respect to gender in both urban and rural schools. By controlling the effects of gender and school location, it is found that attitudes towards mathematics and mathematics anxiety are significant predictors of mathematical achievement.

Book excerpt: Algebra classes are traditionally taught in ways that emphasize on skill and drill and limit student interaction. This problem this study addresses is the decline in student attitudes and mathematical ability that occurs as students approach algebra. The purpose of this study is to explore how students explain and demonstrate their reasons for struggling in math, as a result of the researcher listening to their lived experiences with algebra in the past, as well as during their time in the researcher's social constructivist math classroom over a school year. The research questions guiding the study were: 1) What are the lived experiences of students in a constructivist algebra classroom?, 2) What meaning do the students make of their experiences in a social constructivist algebra classroom?, and 3) What strategies do students feel are most beneficial to them while learning algebra? In order to answer these three questions, the study was designed using a phenomenological framework and relied on qualitative research as the basis for the methodology. In addition, constructivism with the use of Activity Theory and Hannula's (2002) definition of attitude comprised of the lens through which the researcher analyzed students' experiences in a social constructivist algebra classroom. The primary finding of the study showed students entered the researcher's Algebra 2 Strategies class emotionally damaged with strong negative attitudes towards mathematics. At the end of the school year students showed a shift in their attitudes feeling more capable of succeeding in an algebra class. Findings showed students lived experiences within a math class are composed of student emotions, student actions, and the interactions with their teacher. With the use of care and compassion, the teacher acts as a bridge between student emotions and student actions within an algebra classroom. This research calls for teachers to utilize a Pedagogy of Care within their classrooms and presents a Final Action Plan for algebra teachers to follow.

There is a perception among school systems that encouraging eighth graders to enroll in higher level math classes beginning with Algebra 1 in middle school will help with this issue. The purpose of this study was to determine how attitude toward mathematics correlates with success for middle school students taking Algebra 1. Rarely are attitudes and feelings addressed in a mathematics classroom. Typically, the focus is on the cognitive aspect, and little attention is given to the affective domain. -- This study used a quantitative design. The participants in this study were 257 students enrolled in Algebra 1 in eighth grade during the 2010-2011 school year. Five middle schools from three school systems located in the western region of North Carolina were selected. Data for this research included two instruments: the Attitudes toward Mathematics Inventory (ATMI) and the North Carolina end-of-course Algebra 1 test. -- Findings from this study examined all students as well as looked at gender and the three Local Education Authorities (LEA). A positive relationship existed between not only attitude and math scores, but all subscales (self-confidence, enjoyment, motivation, and value). The subscale of value of mathematics consistently showed the lowest correlation. Some individual differences were found between LEAs. -- This study suggests that attitude including the subscales from the inventory be addressed when teachers plan their curriculum. Whether using current programs available or model teachers, schools need to be willing to incorporate the affective domain into the mathematics classroom. The connection between the cognitive and the affective domains will bring the success our schools are seeking for their math students.
