This book was released on 1999 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book a study is presented on the attitudes of 12- to 20-year-old youngsters towards social limits, imposed by their social and educational environment by means of laws, rules, values, norms or expectations. The study is part of a research programme on the course and treatment of juvenile delinquency, which started at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen during the eighties. Young people's attitudes towards social limits are assessed by the 'Standard Reaction Instrument'. A critical incident technique is used to elicit young people's knowledge, behavioral intentions and motivations in ten hypothetical situations including social limits. The instrument was administered from youngsters in secondary schools and from same-aged detained youngsters who have committed at least one criminal offence which has been recorded by police or judicial authorities. The responses of both groups are compared in order to test the validity of the instrument. Further, the relationship is tested between the youngsters' attitudes towards social limits and self-reported delinquent and aggressive behavior. Finally, a comparison is made between the responses of Flemish and Dutch youngsters. Starting point of the empirical study is a social psychological view on juvenile delinquency. In this view, which is based on the self-presentation paradigm developed by the sociologist Ervin Goffman and the early symbolic interactionists, juvenile delinquency is considered as a means of social communication towards significant others (parents, teachers, peers, society). Special attention is paid to the development, maintenance and management of social reputation by the juvenile delinquent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attitudes have been a central topic in social psychology from its early beginnings. But what exactly are attitudes, where do they come from, and how can they be modified? The overall aim of Attitudes and Attitude Change is to provide students with a comprehensive and accessible introduction to these basic issues in the psychological study of attitudes. In four parts, readers learn about how attitudes can be measured, how attitudes are shaped in the course of life, how they are changed by other people, and finally, how attitudes in turn affect our thoughts and behavior. This completely revised and updated second edition covers many recent developments and reports cutting-edge research while also addressing the classic findings and theories that advanced the field. In addition to integrating the newly emerged topics of implicit attitudes and recent models regarding the coexistence of explicit and implicit attitudes, this edition also adds chapters on social influence and resistance to persuasion. This comprehensive and user-friendly book carefully balances theoretical underpinnings and empirical findings with applied examples to enable readers to use the insights of attitude research for practical applications. Critical discussions also instigate readers to develop their own thinking on key topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reasons why people do not always act in accord with their attitudes has been the focus of much social psychological research, as have the factors that account for why people change their attitudes and are persuaded by such influences as the media. There is strong support for the view that attitude-behavior consistency and persuasion cannot be well understood without reference to the wider social context in which we live. Although attitudes are held by individuals, they are social products to the extent that they are influenced by social norms and the expectations of others. This book brings together an international group of researchers discussing private and public selves and their interaction through attitudes and behavior. The effects of the social context on attitude-behavior relations and persuasion is the central theme of this book, which--in its combination of theoretical exposition, critique, and empirical research--should be of interest to both basic and applied social psychologists.

Classic studies are interwoven with important recent findings to provide a scholarly overview of this exciting area of social psychology′ - Professor Mark Conner, University of Leeds ′Maio and Haddock provide an excellent up-to-date summary of the key findings in the field in their very readable new text′ - Richard E. Petty, Ohio State University People spontaneously evaluate things. We form opinions on topics such as war and climate change, on other people such as our work colleagues and celebrities, and on behaviours such as sexual activity and waste recycling. At times, these attitudes can be the focus of bitter debate, and as humans we naturally crave to understand attitudes and how to change them. In four sections and 11 chapters, Greg Maio and Geoffrey Haddock describe how scientific methods have been used to better understand attitudes and how they change. The first section looks at what attitudes are and why they are important. The second section examines the ability of attitudes to predict behaviour. From there, the authors consider how attitudes are formed and changed. Finally, they present a variety of major issues for understanding internal (such as, neurological) and external (such as, culture) influences on attitude, along with unresolved questions. With the aid of a few helpful metaphors, the text provides readers with a grasp of the fundamental concepts for understanding attitudes and an appreciation of the scientific challenges that lie ahead. The Psychology of Attitudes and Attitude Change is for students in psychology, health psychology, communication, business and political science. It is a core text for courses in the psychology of attitudes, persuasion, and social influence and a key resource for modules in social cognition and introductory social psychology

It will help you control your anxiety and overcome other emotional problems"--Albert Ellis, Ph.D. The founder of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Albert Ellis, was voted the second-most influential psychologist of all time by the American Psychological Association (APA). Dr. Ellis devoted a chapter to Attitude Is All You Need! in his book How to Control Your Anxiety Before It Controls You.To be concise, the book is about Attitude Power (AP). From reading it, you will discover how to increase your Attitude Power, and how to decrease your attitude weaknesses and deficiencies. Don't you think the time and energy spent on improving your mental health is worth the benefits to your relationships and career?FEATURE #1: Attitude Power helps you to become more aware of your attitudes and the effects your attitudes have on you, your competence, relationships, and stress.BENEFIT #1: Your awareness of your attitudes allows you to switch from ineffective or damaging attitudes to effective or helpful attitudes. Attitude Power can be used to lower your stress by helping you to choose a less stressful attitude.FEATURE #2: Attitude Power helps you to become responsible for your attitudes and stress. Responsibility regains control lost to victimhood.BENEFIT #2: Your responsibility for your attitudes allows you to regain your personal power and to take charge of your attitudes. When you are feeling stress, you are more likely to look for internal methods of dealing with the stress than to blame uncontrollable external sources; hence, you are better able to lower your stress.FEATURE #3: Attitude Power helps you to choose the most effective attitude for the situation. You learn also to choose to choose again after testing the results of your attitude choices.BENEFIT #3: You can cope more effectively because your attitude not only does not get in the way of your coping--your attitude helps you deal effectively with the situation. Your stress is lower as you are more effective. You achieve more of what you want to achieve by choosing the attitude that will help you the most.FEATURE #4: Attitude Power teaches the practice of acceptance when you cannot change things for the better. Acceptance overcomes stress.BENEFIT #4: You are free of bad stress. You do not let bad stress get worked out on your body, which leads to medical problems. You allow good stress to get things done. You switch from bad stress to prevent apathy, burnout, conflicts, cynicism, disease, fights, and illness. The author's works offer 6 different approaches to self-help. (1) In Breathe, you discover methods for congruence, self-relaxation, self-calming, and self-centering. (2) In Garden, you discover methods for sorting out what thoughts work for you and what thoughts work against you. You also learn how to increase your productive thoughts and to decrease your unproductive thoughts. (3) In Not, you discover methods to stop using the number one mistake that underlies failure. You also learn how to be a more effective parent or leader. (4) In Ego, you discover methods to reduce your devotion to and dependence on ego. You also learn how to be free, happy, and more creative. (5) In Attitude Is All You Need!, you discover methods to sort out what attitudes are working for you and what attitudes are working against you. You also learn how to increase your productive attitudes and how to decrease your unproductive attitudes. (6) In the four books Something For Nothing, Anything Goes, Acid Test, and 3D: Daily Dose of Discernment: 2005 you are given sayings and aphorism to use for introspection, contemplation, and meditation. Please experiment until you find the one or two approaches that work best for you. Worry not if the approaches are the best for anyone else.
