Part 4 is devoted to hydrodynamic stability theory which aims at predicting the conditions under which the laminar state of a flow turns into a turbulent state. The phenomenon of laminar-turbulent transition remains one of the main challenges of modern physics. The resolution of this problem is important not only from a theoretical viewpoint but also for practical applications. For instance, in the flow past a passenger aircraft wing, the laminar-turbulent transition causes a fivefold increase in the viscous drag. The book starts with the classical results of the theory which include the global stability analysis followed by the derivation of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation. The properties of this equation are discussed using, as examples, plane Poiseuille flow and the Blasius boundary layer. In addition, we discuss 'inviscid flow' instability governed by the Rayleigh equation, Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, crossflow instability, and centrifugal instability, taking the form of Taylor-Görtler vortices. However, in this presentation our main attention regards recent developments in the theory. These include linear and nonlinear critical layer theory, the theory of receptivity of the boundary layer to external perturbations, weakly nonlinear stability theory of Landau and Stuart, and vortex-wave interaction theory. The latter allows us to describe self-sustaining nonlinear perturbations within a viscous fluid.

The book presents all the fundamental results on linear averaging dynamics, proposing a unified and updated viewpoint of many models and convergence results scattered in the literature. Starting from the classical evolution of the powers of a fixed stochastic matrix, the text then considers more general evolutions of products of a sequence of stochastic matrices, either deterministic or randomized. The theory needed for a full understanding of the models is constructed without assuming any knowledge of Markov chains or Perron–Frobenius theory. Jointly with their analysis of the convergence of averaging dynamics, the authors derive the properties of stochastic matrices. These properties are related to the topological structure of the associated graph, which, in the book’s perspective, represents the communication between agents. Special attention is paid to how these properties scale as the network grows in size. Finally, the understanding of stochastic matrices is applied to the study of other problems in multi-agent coordination: averaging with stubborn agents and estimation from relative measurements. The dynamics described in the book find application in the study of opinion dynamics in social networks, of information fusion in sensor networks, and of the collective motion of animal groups and teams of unmanned vehicles. It is used in this book to refer to a set of phenomena associated with the dynamical evo lution of quantum systems of the simplest kind that involve rigorous mathematical structures associated with infinitely many degrees of freedom. The dynamics of such a system is represented by a one-parameter group of automorphisms of a non commutative algebra of observables, and we focus primarily on the most concrete case in which that algebra consists of all bounded operators on a Hilbert space. If one introduces a natural causal structure into such a dynamical system, then a pair of one-parameter semigroups of endomorphisms emerges, and it is useful to think of this pair as representing the past and future with respect to the given causality. These are both Eo-semigroups, and to a great extent the problem of understanding such causal dynamical systems reduces to the problem of under standing Eo-semigroups. The nature of these connections is discussed at length in Chapter 1.
