Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experiments in Controlling Corn Ear Pests in Puerto Rico Ears were harvested and examined at roasting-ear stage of develop ment. All ears were harvested at the roasting-ear stage and immediately examined for extent Of filling of the ear as well as for the presence of insect larvae. Separate records were taken for each ear, the presence or absence of both species Of earworms or the small, corn-silk fly larvae being recorded. It is difficult to distinguish the larvae of the corn earworm from those Of the fall armyworm; since both are known to be present in the island and since they caused the same kind Of damage no attempt was made to separate them, and both types are mentioned together. The presence Of a single larva Of any one of the three ear pests was sufficient for an ear to be classified as infested. Protecting silks for period prior to pollination resulted in poorly filled. Ears. The filling of the ears was unsatisfactory even when the silks were exposed for 168 hours. Only 10. 4 percent Of the ears were well filled following the 4-hour exposure, 53 percent as a result Of the 24-hour exposure, and only 61 percent after 168 hours' exposure. A summary of the results Of the insect infestation counts are shown by treatments in table 1. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruce E. Tabashnik and Richard T. Roush Pesticide resistance is an increasingly urgent worldwide problem. Resistance to one or more pesticides has been documented in more than 440 species of insects and mites. Resistance in vectors of human dise8se, particularly malaria-transmit ting mosquitoes, is a serious threat to public health in many nations. Agricultural productivity is jeopardized because of widespread resistance in crop and livestock pests. Serious resistance problems are also evident in pests of the urban environ ment, most notably cockroaches. Better understanding of pesticide resistance is needed to devise techniques for managing resistance (Le. , slowing, preventing, or reversing development of resistance in pests and promoting it in beneficial natural enemies). At the same time, resistance is a dramatic example of evolution. Knowledge of resistance can thus provide fundamental insights into evolution, genetics, physiology, and ecology. Resistance management can help to reduce the harmful effects of pesticides by decreasing rates of pesticide use and prolonging the efficacy of environmentally safe pesticides. In response to resistance problems, the concentration or frequency of pesticide applications is often increased. Effective resistance management would reduce this type of increased pesticide use. Improved monitoring of resis tance would also decrease the number of ineffective pesticide applications that are made when a resistance problem exists but has not been diagnosed. Resistance often leads to replacement of one pesticide with another that is more expensive and less compatible with alternative controls.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our objective in compiling a series of chapters on the chemical ecology of insects has been to delineate the major concepts of this discipline. The fine line between presenting a few topics in great detail or many topics in veneer has been carefully drawn, such that the book contains sufficient diversity to cover the field and a few topics in some depth. After the reader has penetrated the crust of what has been learned about chemical ecology of insects, the deficiencies in our understanding of this field should become evident. These deficiencies, to which no chapter topic is immune, indicate the youthful state of chemical ecology and the need for further investigations, especially those with potential for integrating elements that are presently isolated from each other. At the outset of this volume it becomes evident that, although we are beginning to decipher how receptor cells work, virtually nothing is known of how sensory information is coded to become relevant to the insect and to control the behavior of the insect. This problem is exacerbated by the state of our knowledge of how chemicals are distributed in nature, especially in complex habitats. And finally, we have been unable to understand the significance of orientation pathways of insects, in part because of the two previous problems: orientation seems to depend on patterns of distri bution of chemicals, the coding of these patterns by the central nervous system, and the generation of motor output based on the resulting motor commands.

Book excerpt: This report is aimed at private sector involvement in the production phase of sterile insects for use in pest control. It is a guideline or tool to support the development of more specific business plans that will need to be prepared on a case by case basis, taking into account the species to be reared and the location of the facility. It provides the international perspective on a number of issues of importance for a sterile insect production facility. While some of the points raised will be well known by everybody working in the sector and are included to inform potential investors, other findings present new challenges to production facility managers, whether in private industry or government organizations.
