Research on attachment theory suggests that secure adult attachment is important for general functioning and development in life. However, Hispanics seeking mental health care are often underrepresented in such research. The current study examined the predictive value of acculturation level and attachment style on self-reported mental health in a Hispanic college sample (N = 145). Participants completed questionnaires of acculturation, attachment style and symptoms of mental health. Results indicated that (a) lower levels of acculturation predicted somatization symptoms, and (b) insecure attachment predicted symptoms of depression and anxiety. These findings suggest that attachment and acculturation can be used to predict certain aspects of mental health, with notable clinical implications for the treatment of Hispanic clients.

Book excerpt: Previous research has explored the influence of attachment on the preference for particular conflict resolution styles. Research suggests that conflictual interactions are one of the situations that can activate attachment systems. Although the relationship of attachment to preference for conflict resolution behaviors has been explored, the role of acculturation has received very little attention. Previous research has found acculturation to be highly predictive of certain health-risk behaviors in adolescents, and research has also found that acculturation affects a variety of interactions and plays a role in the relationships people develop outside of the family. The current study sought to explore the relationship between adult acculturation style, attachment styles, and conflict resolution styles in romantic relationships using Rusbult's Exit, Voice, Loyalty, Neglect typology. Participants were eighty-seven students currently involved in romantic relationships. Participants completed questionnaires measuring attachment style, conflict resolution behaviors, and acculturation. Participants also completed questionnaires measuring investment, satisfaction, and commitment in romantic relationships. Results founds that males that assimilated to American culture utilized exit behaviors significantly more often that females that integrated cultures and females that assimilated to American culture. Overall, participants that assimilated utilized exit behaviors significantly more often than participants that integrated cultures. Securely attached adults utilized voice behaviors significantly more often than anxious adults. No significant difference was found for the utilization of voice, neglect, or loyalty for any of the attachment styles (secure, anxious, and avoidant) or for the acculturation variables (integration and assimilation).

Book excerpt: The current study sought to explore the ways in which attachment style and acculturation may impact one’s perception of a meaningful life. When someone has a secure attachment style, they are more likely to explore their surroundings, express a range of positive and negative emotions, and are more likely to develop healthy relationships and assume leadership positions through nominations from their peers (Siegel, 2001; Sroufe, et al., 2005). Individuals with secure attachment style are less likely to have mental health problems than their insecurely attached peers (Siegel, 2001; Sroufe, et al., 2005). Individuals reporting living a meaningful life are more likely to report overall wellbeing as well. The mental health results of acculturation are more varied (Lawton, et al., 2018; Schwartz, et al., 2010). The present study conducted a multivariate analysis to find whether individuals with a secure attachment style are more likely to report an increased sense of belonging, purpose, transcendence, and therapeutic storytelling; the four variables Emily Esfahani Smith (2017) refers to as the “four pillars for a meaningful life.” The study also consisted of multivariate analyses to determine whether individuals highly acculturated in general, and specifically to Deaf culture, reported an increased sense of a meaningful life compared to their less highly acculturated peers. Results indicated that high acculturation to Hearing culture had a significant association with perceiving life as meaningful. Participants reporting greater Deaf acculturation endorsed significantly higher scores on transcendence. A multivariate analysis found secure attachment style had a significant association with participants’ perceptions of a meaningful life. -- Abstract.
