Book Synopsis Atonement: A Guide for the Perplexed by : Adam J. Johnson
Download or read book Atonement: A Guide for the Perplexed written by Adam J. Johnson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-21 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians agree that they are saved through the death and resurrection of Christ. But how is the atonement achieved in these events? This book offers an introduction to the doctrine of the atonement focused on the unity and diversity of the work of Christ. Johnson reorients current patterns of thought concerning Christ's work by giving the reader a unifying vision of the immensely rich and diverse doctrine of the atonement, offering a sampling of its treasures, and cultivating the desire to further understand and apply these riches to everyday life. Where introductions to the atonement typically favor one aspect of the work of Christ, or work with a set number of themes, aspects or theories, this book takes the opposite approach, developing the foundation for the multi-faceted nature of Christ's work within the being of God himself. It offers a grand unifying vision of Christ's manifold work. Specific elaborations of different theories of the atonement, biblical themes, and the work of different theologians find their place within this larger rubric.

Book excerpt: No, Jesus did not die to purchase forgiveness from God or so that God could love you once again. God has always loved and always forgiven you for all your sins. By reading this book, you will learn why Jesus died, and what His death means. In the process, you will learn to see God, Scripture, yourself, and humanity in a whole new light. The ten areas that you will understand in a whole new way are: 1. The Life of Jesus Christ 2. God 3. Scripture 4. Sacrifice 5. Humanity 6. Sin 7. Forgiveness 8. Justice 9. Violence 10. Download or read book Christus Victor written by Gustaf Aulen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-09-05 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gustaf Aulen's classic work, 'Christus Victor', has long been a standard text on the atonement. Aulen applies history of ideas' methodology to historical theology in tracing the development of three views of the atonement. Aulen asserts that in traditional histories of the doctrine of the atonement only two views have usually been presented, the objective/Anselmian and the subjective/Aberlardian views. According to Aulen, however, there is another type of atonement doctrine in which Christ overcomes the hostile powers that hold humanity in subjection, at the same time that God in Christ reconciles the world to Himself. This view he calls the "classic" idea of the atonement. Because of its predominance in the New Testament, in patristic writings, and in the theology of Luther, Aulen holds that the classic type may be called the distinctively Christian idea of the atonement.

It’s a horrible feeling that you don’t quite match up, that you’re forever falling short, that you’ll never live up to others’ expectations. We’ve all faced it, whether it’s being last-pick for the softball team at school, being overlooked for a promotion at work, or being excluded from a group of friends. Sometimes the rejection runs even deeper. Feelings of loneliness and inadequacy are hard to handle. The good news is there’s a remedy. It’s in Jesus Christ, who faced the ultimate rejection and therefore knows how it feels. In bearing our sins, He was rejected by the Father and by us, His own creation, as well. He knows how it hurts. Because He faced that pain, we no longer need to. He’s planned another life for us, a life of acceptance in His family and freedom from rejection. Let go of the shame and enjoy the Father’s embrace today.
