Book excerpt: Atom transfer radical polymerizations (ATRP) of methyl acrylate (MA), methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St) were conducted by continuous feeding of Cu(I)X/Ligand activators. Typically, the monomer, the initiator, and a certain amount of deactivator, Cu(II)X2/Ligand, were placed in a Schlenk flask deoxygenized by bubbling with N2. The activator, Cu(I)X/Ligand, was placed in a gas-tight syringe and was added at a constant rate to the Schlenk flask using a syringe pump. In ATRP, the Cu(I) catalyst would undergo many oxidation/reduction cycles when the propagation of polymer chains is taking place. However, some of the Cu(I) would finally be oxidized to Cu(II) irreversibly. According to the principle of halogen conservation, the end-group loss equals the amount of Cu(I) that is permanently oxidized to Cu(II). Thus, by reducing the amount of Cu(I) added to the reaction, ATRP by continuous feeding of activators sets an upper limit of the potential end-group loss. The end-group fidelity information is readily known at the beginning of the reaction.

Book excerpt: Synthesis of poly (methyl methacrylate) by activators regenerated by electron transfer (ARGET) atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was extensively studied. It was observed that when the target molecular weight is higher, side reactions and terminations becomes more prominent. In this study, a facile method was used to synthesize high molecular weight PMMA by ARGET ATRP.The effect of solvent, catalyst and ligand were discussed systematically. Low molecular weight polyethylene glycol (PEG) (600 g/mol) as solvent significantly increased the reaction rate and provides molecular weight as high as 96 kDa within 2h reaction, Ð as low as 1.2. PEG can stabilize the catalyst by complexing to avoid the side reactions such as the reactions between catalyst and chain end. The terminal hydroxyl group could potentially increase the reaction rate. It was also observed that the results have PEG molecular weight dependence. As PEG molecular weight increased, viscosity increased which resulted in poor polymer chain diffusion. However PEG-metal stability constant increased when PEG molecular weight increased which provided better control. These factors competitively affected the polymerization kinetics. Optimum solvent was observed using PEG (600 Da). The comparison between two copper based catalysts CuBr2 and CuCl2 showed that shorter bond length of Cu-Br leaded to a faster reaction rate. For the comparison of ligands, N,N,N',N',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as a tridentate ligand had weaker reducing ability but stronger coordination ability compared to tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) as bidentate ligand.Synthesized PMMA was used as macroinitiator to synthesize poly (methyl methacrylate)-block-polystyrene (PMMA-PS) block copolymer by bulk ARGET ATRP. With the increasing amount of styrene, PMMA diffusion became better and prematurely termination was reduced. PMMA-PS with molecular weight of 770 kDa and Ð of 1.32 was successfully synthesized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) which utilizes transition metal based catalysts is a versatile methodology for the synthesis of a wide spectrum of polymers with controlled architectures. However, high concentrations of soluble catalyst required in an ATRP process makes the final polymer colored and toxic. Thus, the catalyst removal/reduction/recycling remains a challenge in the field of ATRP. Supported catalysts on insoluble solids such as silica gel, polystyrene beads, etc. have been used in ATRP to facilitate the catalyst recovery and recycling. However, the ability of the supported catalysts to mediate a polymerization is substantially reduced due to their reduced mobility and leaching problems. In this thesis, we report a series of novel and recyclable physisorbed CuBr2/N, N, N', N'' -pentamethyldiethylene-triamine supported catalytic systems operating in conjunction with hydration. Supported aqueous-phase catalysis (SAPC) for ATRP was evaluated for different inorganic (Na-clay, silica and zeolite) and organic (polysaccharides) supports. The hydrated physisorbed supported catalysts were used for the polymerization of benzyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate using an activator generated electron transfer ATRP process. The catalyst was effectively retained on the surface of supports through hydration as was verified by UV-Vis measurements. The supported catalyst was easily removed from the polymerization by simple filtration process affording a colorless polymer solution. The polymerizations produced high conversion and colorless polymers with moderately narrow polydispersity indices (PDI). The catalyst maintained high activity during the recycling experiments. We also investigated the kinetic and mechanistic behavior of these solid supported polymerization systems. Based on split kinetics experiments and UV-Vis studies it was believed that the activation and deactivation processes took place at the diffused hydrated interface between the solid support and organic phase. The branched (stars and graft) polymers were also synthesized using Na-clay supported catalyst. The produced polymers had narrow PDI and good initiator efficiencies. The functionality of the star polymers was confirmed using 1H NMR and dilute solution properties. The synthesis of graft-copolymer was confirmed by 1H NMR and atomic force microscopy. This thesis demonstrates the successful use of SAPC for ATRP to produce contamination free linear and branched polymers with moderately narrow PDI and high recycling efficiency.

Book excerpt: In this work, methylmethacrylate, MMA was polymerized by ATRP method to obtain low molecular weight living polymers. The initiator was p-toluenesulfonylchloride and catalyst ligand complex system were CuCl-4,4’ dimethyl 2,2’bipyridine. Polymers with controlled molecular weight were obtained. The polymer chains were shown by NMR investigation to be mostly syndiotactic. The molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of some polymer samples were measured by GPC method. The K and a constants in [h]=K Ma equation were measured as 9.13x10-5 and 0.74, respectively. FT-IR and X-Ray results showed regularity in polymer chains. The molecular weight-Tg relations were verified from results of molecular weight-DSC results.

The results showed the characteristic features of living polymerization up to Mn (80,000, e.g. constant concentration of propagating species, a linear relation between conversion and molecular weight and narrow polydispersities (Mw/Mn (1.2). As an initiation system, 2- bromomethyl propionate and CuBr complexed by 4,4'-Di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine DThipy or 4,4'-di-(5-nonyl)-2,2'-bipyridine DNbipy were employed. Kinetic studies showed that the propagation rate is first order in relation to the monomer and initiator. For the homogeneous catalyst system (copper(I)/dNbipy), the propagation rate is first order with respect to the initial concentration of catalyst and inverse first order with respect to the initial concentration of Cu(II)Br2. The propagation rate in non-homogeneous system (copper(I)/dTbipy) less depends on the on the initial concentration of catalyst and Cu(II)Br2. These results can be explained by the reversible formation of growing polyacrylate radicals by the reaction of dormant bromo-terminated chains with copper halide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is the most utilized controlled free-radical polymerization technique. Synthetic polymers can be prepared with predefined molecular weight, low dispersity, precisely selected end groups, and even different shapes via ATRP. In conventional ATRP, thermal stimulation is used to activate the reaction. Light stimulation is more effective and convenient than thermally driven techniques. In addition, transition metal catalysts (most commonly Cu(I)) in the ATRP system limit the potential use in biological and microelectronic applications which are sensitive to metal ion contamination. As a result, the trend in future research and exploration is the metal-free photoinduced ATRP system, in which organic photocatalyst is used. The goal of my research is to find a new photocatalyst. Typically, the catalyst needs to meet the following requirements: strong visible light absorption, high rate of ISC/ high triplet quantum yield, and sufficiently long lifetime for electron transfer to occur. Following these rules, we chose Coumarin 343 and verified whether it can be used as a photocatalyst for photoinduced metal-free ATRP. The first step in this research was the polymerization of methyl methacrylate catalyzed by Coumarin 343. The second step is the chain extension experiment. We used PMMA, which was synthesized in the first step, as a macroinitiator to initiate different monomers. The structure of polymers was studied by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and the molecular weights of polymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The characterization results prove that we have successfully synthesized PMMA and extended the polymer chains. In addition, we found that coumarin 343 can be used not only as a photocatalyst, but also as a photoinitiator, and we hypothesized its mechanism.

Book excerpt: The results of quantitative studies of the rates of free radical polymerizations of vinyl ferrocene indicate that the latter has polymerization characteristics similar to those for styrene. The rates of homopolymerization of these two monomers in benzene at 70 C. were measured using azo-bis-isobutyronitrile as the catalyst. Small amounts of vinyl ferrocene and styrene have similar effects on the rates of polymerizations of methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate and on the molecular weights of the resulting polymer. Polystyrene and poly vinyl ferrocene with similar molecular weights are isolated from polymerizations carried out under identical conditions. The rates of copolymerization of vinyl ferrocene-methyl methacrylate vinyl ferrocene-styrene, and styrene-methyl methacrylate were determined by following the disappearance of monomers using gas chromatographic analyses. The relative reactivity ratio for vinyl ferrocene is slightly lower than that for styrene. (Author).
