Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vertical structures of tropospheric temperature and moisture over the oceans have not been well observed to date. The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) aboard NASA2s Aqua satellite offers the opportunity to provide observed soundings of these variables. This thesis focuses on the validation and application of AIRS soundings in the tropical troposphere over the Atlantic Ocean, with emphasis on the Saharan Air Layer (SAL). SAL outbreaks occur every few days, producing a warm air mass that is particularly dry at the middle levels. These westward-propagating plumes inhibit convection and are thereby thought to possess a detrimental effect on African easterly waves and tropical cyclones (TCs). First, AIRS soundings are compared with concurrent Global Positioning System (GPS) dropwindsonde data released from NOAA2s Gulfstream-IV jet aircraft, for three TC cases. In SAL environments, temperature soundings from both instruments are usually consistent. Additionally, AIRS is able to capture the very dry air in the middle levels, but it generally underestimates the moisture in the boundary layer and often misses the sharp vertical moisture gradient at the SAL base (~850 hPa). In the moist tropical boundary layer, AIRS also exhibits a dry bias. Cloud cover also prevents AIRS from accurately sampling the low-level moisture. Next, total precipitable water is derived from AIRS soundings and averaged over daily, monthly and seasonal timescales. The significant monthly and interannual variability of the moisture distribution is found to be consistent with expectations. A peak in the probability density function of mixing ratio corresponding to dry air is observed in the lower-mid troposphere in early summer, consistent with the increased frequency of SAL outbreaks during this period. Finally, the relationship between dry air derived from AIRS and TC intensity is explored. As the amount of dry air increases, particularly in the southeast and northeast quadrants of the TC, the TC becomes more likely to weaken. In the presence of high wind shear or low sea surface temperature, the likelihood of weakening increases further. While these results highlight some shortcomings of the AIRS data, their importance and uniqueness are emphasized via new applications of AIRS soundings over data sparse regions.

Book excerpt: The atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), a sensor aboard NASA's Aqua satellite, has been collecting temperatures, water vapor mass-mixing ratios, and cloud fractions at various atmosphere pressure levels since its launch in mid-2002. The AIRS level 3 Quantization (L3Q) product summarizes atmospheric data in each 5X5 latitude-longitude grid box during a time period by a set of representative vectors and their associated weights, which can be treated as an empirical distribution. A study on the empirical distribution of AIRS L3Q data might be useful in terms of summarizing the local climate pattern. This study provides insights on how statistical methods may extract more information from the AIRS L3Q data than from the simple sample average summary in each grid box.

While satellites provide suitable global datasets for comparing with cloud properties derived from models, satellite retrievals are inferences of cloud properties, rather than direct measurements, and therefore have errors. Therefore, it is important to evaluate satellite cloud products and gain advanced understanding of the products to accurately interpret the observations. This study investigates Aqua AIRS version 6 Level 2 cloud thermodynamic phase, ice cloud optical thickness, and ice cloud effective diameter, which released in April, 2013 and are available for all 13 years of the AIRS record. A filtering and gridding algorithm is used to create customized globally gridded datasets to evaluate the effects of satellite's viewing zenith angle, effective cloud fraction, cloud layers, cloud top temperature, time of the year, and geographic region. Viewing zenith angle does not strongly affect AIRS ice-phase, but higher viewing zenith angles lead to more water and fewer unknown pixels; the viewing zenith angle dependence is not strongly affected by the time of the year. Higher effective cloud fraction yields more ice- and water-phase, and less unknown-phase retrievals. Also, higher effective cloud fractions lead to greater values of ice cloud optical thickness. In addition, especially in high latitudes, ice-phase frequency is greater for two-layer clouds than single-layer clouds. On the other hand, water- and unknown-phase frequencies are greater for single layer clouds. Also, higher viewing zenith angles slightly decrease upper cloud top temperature. Approximately 90% of ice-phase cases have upper cloud top temperature values between 210 K and 235 K, ~80% of water-phase cases are found at 243-273 K upper cloud top temperature interval, and ~80% of the unknown cases have upper cloud top temperature values between 230 and 264 K. For ice cloud optical thickness and ice cloud effective diameter, no strong effects of satellite viewing zenith angle or cloud layering are observed. Book excerpt: The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) satellite has been taking measurements since 2002 across the entire Earth. The main variables the AIRS satellite in observing are water vapor and temperature profiles. Given the long orbiting time of the satellite, the data provided is of utmost importance in understanding the climatic changes on Earth. This science is necessary because it helps us understand Earth's climatic and cyclic events more thoroughly. These cyclic climatic events can be accentuated in a fragile environment, such as the Arctic. In the Arctic, it is difficult to observe certain characteristics of the climate due to extreme temperatures, harsh weather, consistent cloud coverage, and a limited number of ground stations. While many papers use these ground-based observations to verify satellite data, there have been few studies that validates the AIRS satellite to the ground observations. In this study, the near surface temperature obtained from AIRS satellite is evaluated against a ground-based station in Barrow, Alaska, which can lead to a better understanding of the Arctic climate in reacting to our warming climate worldwide. There is a statistically significant strong positive trend for the temperatures and their monthly anomalies. The results indicate that AIRS has a high level of accurate near surface temperatures by comparing to the Barrow Observatory as the ground truth data.
