Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two main nonlinear propagation problems encountered by high power CO2 laser radiation in the atmosphere are gas breakdown and thermal blooming. The influence of particulate matter on gas breakdown and also on thermal blooming was investigated. Typical atmospheric conditions contain approximately 1000 particles/cc. The presence of these particles in the air path of a high power laser beam can dramatically influence the propagation of the beam. This is illustrated by a photograph which shows particles being vaporized and ionized by a high power pulsed CO2 laser beam. The plasma balls generated not only attenuate the laser radiation, but they also act as scattering centers with completely different scattering characteristics than the original particles. The hot vapor can also act as a thermal source which could cause self-induced thermal distortion of subsequent laser pulses.

Book excerpt: Power spectral density estimates of Mie backscatter efficiency factors computed over a range of size parameters from 0.1 to 100 in increments of 0.1 for the refractive index of 1.33 are presented. The power spectral densities are interpreted in terms of geometrical rays. It is concluded that the backscattering is dominated by surface waves which can explain much of the low- and high-frequency Fourier terms. Important implications as applied to the problem of predicting atmospheric transmission and atmospheric false targets from backscattered laser energy are presented. Modification of the SRI Mark VI Lidar for the purpose of transmitting and receiving two-wavelength (0.53 and 1.06 micrometers) energy is described. As a preliminary step, recorded lidar signatures of the output from the two independent receivers in 1.06-micrometers configuration are compared.

The distinctive feature of the experimental campaign referred to here as the Coherent Multi-Beam Atmospheric Transceiver (COMBAT) experiments is that the measurements of the atmospheric-turbulence induced laser beam intensity scintillations at the receiver telescope aperture were obtained simultaneously using three laser sources (laser beacons) with different wavelengths. The presented experimental results on intensity scintillation characteristics reveal complexity of the observed phenomena that cannot be fully explained based on the existing atmospheric turbulence models.

Book excerpt: In the context of Tactical Missile Defense (TMD), an Airborne (High- Energy) Laser (ABL) is investigated for its possible utility for boost-phase kill of a tactical ballistic missile, at a range of 100-1,000 km. Here we examine the effects of clouds and atmospheric turbulence, including possible compensation by Adaptive Optics (AO) techniques, which can interfere with the functioning of this concept. To avoid the effect of clouds, the aircraft carrying the laser should fly as high as possible, preferably above the tropopause. At 15 km (49 kft) there will be no problem at mid-and high latitudes, but in the tropics conventional aircraft cannot fly high enough to avoid possible interference from towering cumulonimbus, which have been found upon occasion as high as 20 km. Regarding the effects of atmospheric turbulence on beam propagation, if the airplane flies high enough that the optical viewing path avoids cloud, there would probably be no major problems with turbulence at ranges of not more than 100 km. However, for longer ranges, there may be significant effects of phase coherence, beam wander, and beam broadening that could require compensation by AO. There are critical uncertainties in models of atmospheric turbulence, suggesting that more data are needed. Work at USAF/ Phillips Laboratory and at MIT/Lincoln Laboratory is attacking the problems of appropriate compensation for atmospheric turbulence by AO techniques, but the current level of effort is not adequate to support deployment of an ABL system for TMD on a near-term basis.
