Book excerpt: The emergence of network technologies paves the way for the merging of voice and data over a common infrastructure - a feat that promises to usher in serious changes in today's public networks and in the communications industry in general. ATM for Public Networks delivers all the comparative data and insights that communications engineers, telecommunications leaders, and Internet Service Providers need to make critical go/no-go decisions about ATM technology. Not just for enthusiasts or the presold, ATM for Public Networks empowers you to make the most cost-, quality-, and time-effective technology choices for your network - based on an in-depth understanding of the tradeoffs. And with its full discussions of TCP bandwidth management ... detailed comparisons of IP over ATM vs. IP over SONET ... and voice over IP vs. voice over ATM ... this book has plenty to give to those with greater interest in other technologies.

Book excerpt: The modern telecommunications world is a complicated place, overloaded with jargon and bewilderingly full of different technical options and opportunities. Many experts are only experts of small domains and within limited geographies. For newcomers it is often difficult to gain a grasp on the basic principles and even harder to unravel the mysterious technical paradoxes and the apparent contradictions of many modern technologies. My greatest hope in writing this book is that you, the reader, will find help and insight amongst its pages. I wish for no greater commendation than your thoughts that you find the subject of A TM presented here in an accessible and readable form. I hope also that the comprehensive glossary will remain with you, as your wayfinder through all that jargon! Martin P. Clark Frankfurt, Germany 20 December 1995 Acknowledgements No book on Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) could fail to recognize the invaluable contribution to this technology and to world standardization as a whole made by the International Telecommunications Union and the ATM Forum, and you will find references to their work throughout the text. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks are widely considered to be the new generation of high speed communication systems both for broadband public information highways and for local and wide area private networks. ATM is designed to integrate existing and future voice, audio, image and data services. Moreover, ATM aims to simplify the complexity of switching and buffer management, to optimise intermediate node processing and buffering and to limit transmission delays. However, to support such diverse services on one integrated communication network, it is most essential, through careful engineering, to achieve a fruitful balance amongst the conflicting requirements of different quality of service constraints ensuring that one service does not have adverse implications on another. Over recent years there has been a great deal of progress in research and development of ATM technology, but there are still many interesting and important problems to be resolved such as traffic characterisation and control, routing and optimisation, ATM switching techniques and the provision of quality of service. This book presents thirty-two research papers, both from industry and academia, reflecting latest original achievements in the theory and practice of performance modelling of ATM networks worldwide. These papers were selected, subject to peer review, from those submitted as extended and revised versions out of fifty-nine shorter papers presented at the Second IFIP Workshop on "Performance Modelling and Evaluation of ATM Networks" July 4-7, 1994, Bradford University. At least three referees from the scientific committee and externally were involved in the selection of each paper.

Book excerpt: Information Highways are widely considered as the next generation of high speed communication systems. These highways will be based on emerging Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks (B-ISDN), which - at least in principle - are envisioned to support not only all the kinds of networking applications known today but also future applications which are not as yet understood fully or even anticipated. Thus, B-ISDNs release networking processes from the limitations which the communications medium has imposed historically. The operational generality stems from the versatility of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) which is the transfer mode adopted by ITU-T for broadband public ISDN as well as wide area private ISDN. A transfer mode which provides the transmission, multiplexing and switching core that lies at the foundations of a communication network. ATM is designed to integrate existing and future voice, audio, image and data services. Moreover, ATM aims to minimise the complexity of switching and buffer management, to optimise intermediate node processing and buffering and to bound transmission delays. These design objectives are met at high transmission speeds by keeping the basic unit of ATM transmission - the ATM cell - short and of fixed length.

Book excerpt: Multi-media networks based on ATM LAN technology can provide integrated transmission of voice, data and visual information direct to the workstation. Such networks are of strategic importance to organisations which depend upon electronic transactions. The smooth operation of these networks is therefore of critical importance. The aim of this special theme is to investigate the state of corporate networks and provide a view of how emerging new technology will improve communications efficiency. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ATM Network Performance describes a unified approach to ATM network management. The focus is on satisfying quality-of-service requirements for individual B-ISDN connections. For an ATM network of output-buffer switches, the author describes how the basic network resources (switch buffer memory and link transmission bandwidth) should be allocated to achieve the required quality-of-service connections. The performance of proposed bandwidth scheduling policies is evaluated. Both single node and end-to-end performance results are given. In particular, these results are applied to resource provisioning problems for prerecorded (stored) video and video teleconferencing. The flow control problem for available bit rate traffic is also described. This book is intended for a one-term course in performance of Broadband Integrated-Services Digital Networks (B-ISDNs) based on a type of packet-switched communication network called Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). The level of presentation is at the first year of graduate studies and for professionals working in the field, but it may be accessible to senior undergraduates as well. Some familiarity with ATM standards is assumed as such standards are only briefly outlined. All of the required background in discrete-time queueing theory is supplied. Exercises are given at the end of chapters. Solutions and/or hints to selected exercises are given in an Appendix.

Book excerpt: Multimedia data streams will form a major part of the new generation of applications in high-speed networks. Continuous media streams, however, require transmission with guaranteed performance. In addition, many multimedia applications will require peer-to-multipeer communication. Guaranteed performance can only be provided with resource reservation in the network, and efficient multipeer communication must be based on multicast support in the lower layers of the network. Architecture and Protocols for High-Speed Networks focuses on techniques for building the networks that will meet the needs of these multimedia applications. In particular two areas of current research interest in such communication systems are covered in depth. These are the protocol related aspects, such as switched networks, ATM, MAC layer, network and transport layer; and the services and applications. Architecture and Protocols for High-Speed Networks contains contributions from leading world experts, giving the most up-to-date research available. It is an essential reference for all professionals, engineers and researchers working in the area of high-speed networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ATM is regarded as the next high speed multimedia networking paradigm. Mobile computing, which is a confluence of mobile communications, computing and networks, is changing the way people work. Wireless ATM combines wireless and ATM technologies to provide mobility support and multimedia services to mobile users. Wireless ATM and Ad-Hoc Networks: Protocols and Architectures, a consolidated reference work, presents the state of the art in wireless ATM technology. It encompasses the protocol and architectural aspects of Wireless ATM networks. The topics covered in this book include: mobile communications and computing, fundamentals of ATM and Wireless ATM, mobile routing and switch discovery, handover protocol design and implementation, mobile quality of service, unifying handover strategy for both unicast and multicast mobile connections, and roaming between Wireless ATM LANs. A novel routing protocol for ad-hoc mobile networks (also known as Cambridge Ad-hoc) is also presented in this book along with information about ETSI HIPERLAN, the RACE Mobile Broadband System, and SUPERNET. This timely book is a valuable reference source for researchers, scientists, consultants, engineers, professors and graduate students working in this new and exciting field.
