Book excerpt: Excerpt from Athletics, Vol. 1: Or, Physical Exercise and Recreation Importance of subject to national welfare - Athletics underrated - Overrated - True function - Individual - Social - Influence on character - Self-control - Fairness - Unselfishness - Good fellowship - Summary. In the motto so happily adopted for the International Health Exhibition, the right end and object of athletics, which we may define as physical exercise and recreation, is tersely and truly expressed. It would be hard to say how much that concerns intimately not only the happiness and usefulness of individual life, but also the good of society, and the future of the race, is involved in the right appreciation of the truth contained in this little form of sound words. They commend that which is as often overlooked by the enthusiastic advocate of intellectual progress as it is neglected by the thoughtless worshipper of physical prowess. They are a standing rebuke to those who would take one side only of human nature under their care, and leave the other to take care of itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Athletic Trainer In the multitude of physical culture counsels derived from all parts of the world, the author believes that none surpass or even equal the old-fashioned English training methods which once stood for our unassailable supremacy in the field of athletics. The American coaches, supposedly gifted with supernatural powers, freely admit that the foundation-stone of their reflected successes in recent years was laid by the teachings of the old school of England's professional athletes. These imply an adherence to simple and therefore natural health rules combined with a nice technical understanding. Nowadays, elementary details are mostly neglected or overlooked, for the reason that most of the qualified track trainers have gone out of business. They and their kind have had to seek other occupations. Some have gone to America, and many are to be found tending to the professional football teams up and down the country. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Power and Health Through Progressive Exercise It must not be thought, however, that this book deals wholly with heavy gymnastics, weight-lifting, and feats of strength. Many light exercises are given as being valuable to promote elasticity and suppleness; and, in addi tion to these, - as an apprenticeship of mode rate exercises is absolutely necessary in order that one may become capable of the simplest exhibition of force, - many intermediate exer cises are carefully described, and their effects discussed. The effects of common indoor and outdoor athletic sports and exercises are gone into. All which, it is hoped, will make this volume a complete manual of physical culture, suitable alike for those boys and girls, men and women, who may wish, without the aid of a teacher, to make the best of their bodies. Book Synopsis Training for Sports (Classic Reprint) by : Walter Camp
Download or read book Training for Sports (Classic Reprint) written by Walter Camp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter Camp's 1921 Training for Sports was intended to be a guide for physical education teachers, coaches, and athletes on how best to prepare their bodies for physical activity. In this sense, it may be best viewed as a guidebook rather than a step by step instruction manual. The book is divided into chapters, which focus on general physical conditioning, mental conditioning, the importance of sleep and diet, as well as specific chapters on the popular sports of the day, such as football, baseball, and track and field. It goes without saying that exercise science has progressed immensely in the nearly one hundred years that have passed since the original publication of Training for Sports. Noserious coach, trainer, or physical educator would be advised to use this book as a reference today. Techniques for both general physical conditioning and sport specific movements have evolved significantly since 1921. Today's game of football is vastly different than that of 1921. The value of Camp's book is thus the historical snapshot it provides. In 1921, training for sports was as much a preparation for a potential war effort than it was for leisure. Camp acknowledges as much in the section on general physical conditioning, stating, "The word training essentially implies a preparation; whether it be for severe physical effort as any athletic competition or military service in time of war, or merely for the ordinary conduct of life." It is clear however that Camp was an expert on the subject matter at the time of writing, and surely would be today were he still alive. He demonstrates remarkable understanding of practices that would come to be known as periodization and specialization, and discourages trainers from promoting a single-sport approach too early in a young athlete's life. Many coaches today would be wise to heed his advice. Training for Sports is recommended for anybody curious about the history of physical conditioning, particularly in the period of this book's initial publication.
