Book excerpt: This paper focusses on the comparative cost of electricity generation in Canada & selected regions of the United States to obtain an indication of enhanced inter-utility co-operation & development opportunities among Canada's electric utilities which would lead to increased economic, reliability, & security benefits for those utilities and for Canada as a whole. Two fundamental elements are assessed: the life cycle cost of generation & associated transmission facilities to bring the power to market within each province & selected US states who might be potential buyers of Canadian electricity; and the estimated annual capacity requirements in each province & selected state to meet the annual growth in demand. Selected provinces & states are grouped to form natural development regions. Within each region, unit energy costs & capacity requirements associated with generating facilities were then used to determine the comparative economic advantage between systems in the region with regard to interprovincial & international trade. From these comparisons, general observations are drawn about the relative economic potential for & possible barriers to increased inter-utility co-operation & development opportunities in North America.

Book excerpt: This report documents the methodology, data, & results of an independent cost-benefit analysis of the financial costs and health & environmental damages associated with four electricity generation scenarios that cover a range of alternatives for replacing the electricity produced by Ontario's coal-fired generation facilities. The scenarios were: base case (continue operating the coal-fired facilities within the current regulatory regime); produce all the replacement electricity through gas-fired generation facilities constructed for this purpose alone; produce all replacement electricity through a combination of refurbished nuclear & new gas generation; and continue operating the coal-fired facilities but with new emission control technology. The steps of the analysis included estimation of the capital, operating, maintenance, & fuel costs of each scenario; air quality modelling using projected emission profiles for each scenario; estimation of health & environmental impacts and their corresponding monetary value; and summing the financial costs & monetary health & environmental damages to arrive at the total cost of generation for each scenario. The net benefit for each scenario relative to the base case was calculated by taking the difference in the total cost of generation.

Book excerpt: This report examines the performance and economics of building-scale alternative energy for five technologies and audiences. The technologies are photovoltaic and wind electricity generation; solar air and water heating; and ground source heat pumps. The audiences are homeowners, large businesses or corporations, small businesses, institutions, and investors. The performance examination tests output variation across Ontario and between the system types. The economic analysis explores the relevant costs, commodity prices and government incentives. An economic model is developed to test the returns, payback period, sensitivity and uncertainty. Analysis with this model for Toronto indicates that ground source heat pumps provide the most energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) savings, and economic returns for most audiences. Solar air and water heating generally provide the least amount of energy and GHG savings but provide good returns for the non-homeowner audiences due to available incentives. Generally, the lowest returns are for wind and PV systems.
