Seven-year-old Parvati's perfect world came crashing down the night the bomb fell on her house and she lost her mother and grandmother. Her father, an army officer deployed in Kashmir during the '71 war, also went missing that night. Orphaned overnight, Parvati left Ambala Cantt to live with her aunt's family. Now, twenty years later, she has returned to 169, The Mall to exorcize the ghosts of the past. While trying to find out what happened on that fateful night Parvati experiences the familiarity and warmth of life in a small cantonment-impromptu picnics, polo matches, husbands' nights. But she also uncovers deep secrets and a web of lies that will forever alter the course of her life. In The House on Mall Road Mohyna Srinivasan gives us a unique glimpse of life in the army-the hospitality of the people, their kindness and affection, the quaint yet charming traditions that uphold authority and valour while always maintaining respect and camaraderie. Dramatic and riveting, The House on Mall Road is a spellbinding debut novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A teenager’s indiscretion becomes a family tragedy and threatens to become a national scandal in this Pakistan-set drama. Gul is the 15-year-old son of poor people who work for Sardar Timur, a wealthy and powerful man in Hayatabad, Pakistan. He’s suddenly pulled into a brief sexual encounter with Timur’s daughter, Farah, on whom he has had a longtime crush, and the two are discovered in an unlucky moment that has extraordinary reverberations. Furious at what he feels is his mortification, Timur calls for a Panchayat, an “informal justice system” that empowers a council of locals to mete out determinations of guilt and innocence. Author Sakhia astutely captures the nature of these easily corruptible proceedings, which are officially illegal but largely ignored by the police. For Gul and his family, the stakes couldn’t be higher; he could be castrated or killed, and his relations could also suffer gruesome fates. Meanwhile, French journalist Arlette Baudis, who has accused the prime minister of Pakistan of sexual harassment, attempts to make the Panchayat fiasco into an issue of international interest—not only to highlight the nation’s corruption but also to challenge its sexist view of women. Over the course of this novel, the author presents a tale that is sinewy and rich, deftly depicting a traditional system of justice as a thinly disguised one of oppression. Sakhia’s sparse, straightforward prose is quietly moving, as when Baudis, in a fit of exasperated anger about the prime minister’s popular election, rages, “How stupid are you people? Where the damn hell is the moral compass?” Sakhia also manages, with great authorial restraint, to refrain from sacrificing the artistic elements of the story to a sententious lesson. Editorial Reviews: "A captivating drama in pursuit of dramatic truth." - Kirkus Reviews "This intense novel of power ... reveals urgent truths and will keep readers turning the pages." - Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: Started in 1958, Sanathana Sarathi is a monthly magazine devoted to Sathya (Truth), Dharma (Righteousness), Shanti (Peace) and Prema (Love) - the four cardinal principles of Bhagawan Baba's philosophy. It is published from Prasanthi Nilayam (the Abode of Highest Peace) and acts as a mouthpiece of Baba's Ashram as it speaks of the important events that take place in His sacred Abode, besides carrying Divine Messages conveyed through Divine Discourses of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The word meaning of Sanathana Sarathi is the 'Eternal Charioteer'. It signifies the presence of the Lord in every being as the atma guiding their lives like a charioteer. It implies that he who places his life, the body being likened to a chariot, in an attitude of surrender in the hands of the Lord, will be taken care of by the Lord even as a charioteer would take the occupant of his chariot safely to its destination. The magazine is an instrument to disseminate spiritual knowledge for the moral, physical and mental uplift of humanity without any discrimination as the subject matter discussed therein is always of common interest and of universal appeal. The fifteen Vahinis - streams of sacredness - known as the Vahini Series comprising annotation and interpretation of the Upanishads and other scriptures, Itihasas like the Ramayana, the Bhagavatha and the Mahabharata, and authentic explanations on Dhyana, Dharma, Prema, etc., have been serially published in this magazine as and when they emanated from the Divine pen of Bhagawan Baba. This magazine is published in almost all Indian languages, English and Telugu from Prasanthi Nilayam and others from respective regions. Every year Sanathana Sarathi comes out with a special issue in November commemorating the Divine Birthday. The English and Telugu magazines are posted on the 10th and 23rd respectively, of every month, from Prasanthi Nilayam. This magazine has wide, ever increasing circulation in India as well as abroad, as the study of it brings the reader closer to the philosophy of the Avatar in simple understandable language THUS SPAKE SAI... Discoursing during the launch of Sanathana Sarathi... From this day, our Sanathana Sarathi will lead to victory the cohorts of truth - the Vedas, the Sastras and similar scriptures of all faiths, against the forces of the ego such as injustice, falsehood, immorality and cruelty. This is the reason why it has emerged. This Sarathi will fight in order to establish world prosperity. It is bound to sound the paean of triumph when universal Ananda is achieved.

Book excerpt: Sir Mark Tully is one of the world's leading writers and broadcasters on India, and the presenter of the much loved radio programme 'Something Understood'. In this fascinating and timely work, he reveals the profound impact India has had on his life and beliefs, and what we can all learn from this rapidly changing nation. Through interviews and anecdotes, he embarks on a journey that takes in the many faces of India, from the untouchables of Uttar Pradesh to the skyscrapers of Gurgaon, from the religious riots of Ayodhya to the calm of a university campus. He explores how successfully India reconciles opposites, marries the sensual with the sacred, finds harmony in discord, and treats certainty with suspicion.

Book excerpt: Rational thinking is a process that involves using reason and logic to think with facts and data, and to draw sensible conclusions. It's a systematic and objective way of thinking that's based on evidence, rather than emotions or biases. The goal of rational thinking is to produce reasonable solutions or reasons. By analyzing archaeological remnants discovered in India (inscriptions, stone slabs, forts, holy sites, civilization-culture), social people from all states, and continual observation in my life, I gradually began to see a glimpse of reality. If you observe and examine the genuine truth of society in the proper way, you will undoubtedly come closer to the truth. After examining all of the data, I had the urge to write everything down, so I began putting everything into words one by one, and as a result, my above thoughts are now available to you in the shape of a book. Regardless, for the time being, I shall consider my efforts to be incomplete. In truth, my efforts will be judged effective only if each individual experiences all of these things firsthand.

Book excerpt: A long-forgotten threat becomes a deadly new danger. What should have been a routine arrest near Geneva turns into a bloody shoot-out. Four terrorists and four policeman are left dead, with Paul Richter on the run from a murder charge. Back in the UK, a tramp is viciously murdered on the Isle of Sheppey. Then a surveillance operation in Stuttgart goes badly wrong when a mole tips off the terrorists. As Richter hunts for the connection between these widely separated events, he discovers a chilling plot: to use the world’s largest ever non-nuclear explosion to devastate the City of London, and leave thousands dead. The fifth Paul Richter novel showcases James Barrington as an elite thriller writer at the very height of his powers. With twists and turns aplenty, Timebomb is perfect for fans of Robert Ludlum, Frederick Forsyth and Brad Thor.
