Book excerpt: A Reference Grammar of Modern Standard Arabic is a comprehensive handbook on the structure of Arabic. Keeping technical terminology to a minimum, it provides a detailed yet accessible overview of Modern Standard Arabic in which the essential aspects of its phonology, morphology and syntax can be readily looked up and understood. Accompanied by extensive carefully-chosen examples, it will prove invaluable as a practical guide for supporting students' textbooks, classroom work or self-study, and will also be a useful resource for scholars and professionals wishing to develop an understanding of the key features of the language. Grammar notes are numbered for ease of reference, and a section is included on how to use an Arabic dictionary, as well as helpful glossaries of Arabic and English linguistic terms and a useful bibliography. Clearly structured and systematically organised, this book is set to become the standard guide to the grammar of contemporary Arabic.

Book excerpt: The study concentrates on the origins, developments and current directions of the discipline called Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL) within the Arab world and partially outside of it during the last sixty years, namely between 1958 and 2018. The most influential scholars, authors, educators and those significant works that contributed to the development of the discipline are taken into account. In addition, special attention is paid to the TAFL institutes, which are considered as epicenters of the activities and that hosted important meetings, allowing scholars to gather around the same table and discuss approaches, trends and methods used in the field of TAFL. All these aspects converge in one comprehensive research, which is enriched by the narration of the main socio-political changes that affected the Middle Eastern region recent history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integrative approach to Jewish and Muslim philosophy in al-Andalus Al-Andalus, the Iberian territory ruled by Islam from the eighth to the fifteenth centuries, was home to a flourishing philosophical culture among Muslims and the Jews who lived in their midst. Andalusians spoke proudly of the region's excellence, and indeed it engendered celebrated thinkers such as Maimonides and Averroes. Sarah Stroumsa offers an integrative new approach to Jewish and Muslim philosophy in al-Andalus, where the cultural commonality of the Islamicate world allowed scholars from diverse religious backgrounds to engage in the same philosophical pursuits. Stroumsa traces the development of philosophy in Muslim Iberia from its introduction to the region to the diverse forms it took over time, from Aristotelianism and Neoplatonism to rational theology and mystical philosophy. She sheds light on the way the politics of the day, including the struggles with the Christians to the north of the peninsula and the Fāṭimids in North Africa, influenced philosophy in al-Andalus yet affected its development among the two religious communities in different ways. While acknowledging the dissimilar social status of Muslims and members of the religious minorities, Andalus and Sefarad highlights the common ground that united philosophers, providing new perspective on the development of philosophy in Islamic Spain.

Book excerpt: Michael G. Carter's Sibawyhi's Principles: Arabic Grammar and Law in Early Islamic Thought is a corrected version, with considerable Addenda, of his 1968 Oxford doctoral thesis, "Sibawayhi's Principles of Grammatical Analysis." It systematically argues that the science of Arabic grammar owes its origins to a special application of a set of methods and criteria developed independently to form the Islamic legal system, not to Greek or other foreign influence. These methods and criteria were then adapted to create a grammatical system brought to perfection by Sibawayhi in the late second/eighth century. It describes the intimate contacts between early jurists and scholars of language out of which the new science of grammar evolved, and makes detailed comparisons between the technical terms of law and grammar to show how the vocabulary of the law was applied to the speech of the Arabs. It also sheds light on Sibawayhi's method in producing his magisterial Kitab.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers are not often associated with passion or culture, yet the use of information technology still has a surprisingly emotional effect on many people, including teachers and learners. This emotion may be anything from excitement and enthusiasm to anger or a sense of threat. Often, this strongly emotional response can prevent us from learning how to use IT effectively as a tool for learning. This book explores how IT can make a real difference to the quality of learning. Its approach takes account of some of the cultural, sociological and psychological factors, which influence how IT is used. The chapters are arranged in three parts. Part One explores the potential of IT as one of many tools which can influence the quality and experience of learning. Part Two looks at how teachers' professional development can help them to use IT effectively in the classroom. Part Three examines strategies for co-ordinating and managing IT development across a whole school or department. Whether you class yourself as technophile or technophobe, this book will show you how you can use IT more effectively in teaching and learning.
