Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firearms violence is as American as apple pie in a country where the right to bear arms is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. Yet, our forefathers could not have imagined armor-piercing bullets, automatic assault rifles in the hands of criminals and suspects using such weapons to kill concert attendees, church-goers and school children. Dr. Rahn Bailey and his coauthors take a hard look at firearm violence from the seat of a medical professional, the issues behind such violence and, finally, how the medical community should be responding to such issues. There is a notion by some, pushed by the National Rifle Association that the only way to stop a "bad guy with a gun is a gun is a good guy with a gun." Dr. Bailey and his colleagues take on that notion head on. His has seen firearm violence up close as a physician and what it does to the victim and everyone around him or her. As an African-American psychiatrist, Dr. Bailey has something to say on the subject that is authoritative, noteworthy and one many should hear. There is a prevailing feeling among some that bringing more guns into a situation will actually make an area or situation safer. That simply is not true. Dr. Bailey's book will examine the impact of suicide and guns, active shooters, how guns are used interpersonally. Many are dying needlessly simply because guns have been introduced into a situation. That does not mean fist fights do not lead to deaths, or conflicts with knives, bats, rocks, etc. will leave people dead. When someone can take a weapons that can fire off hundreds of rounds of ammunition in minutes - even seconds - victims have little chance to survive much less fight back. Gun violence is a health care issue and must be acknowledged as such, researched and treated in such a manner. Dr. Bailey and his colleagues will make that case in the following pages.

They tell how it feels to hold a rebellious child, to wait too long for a too late lover and to miss tomorrow that is already gone. They tell what it is to love at gunpoint."--Page 4 of cover.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Nominated for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work Named a Best Book of the Year by The Root Chosen by Emma Straub as a Best New Celebrity Memoir “A book of essays as raw and honest as anyone has ever produced.” — Lena Dunham, Lenny Letter In the spirit of Amy Poehler’s Yes Please, Lena Dunham’s Not That Kind of Girl, and Roxane Gay's Bad Feminist, a powerful collection of essays about gender, sexuality, race, beauty, Hollywood, and what it means to be a modern woman. One month before the release of the highly anticipated film The Birth of a Nation, actress Gabrielle Union shook the world with a vulnerable and impassioned editorial in which she urged our society to have compassion for victims of sexual violence. In the wake of rape allegations made against director and actor Nate Parker, Union—a forty-four-year-old actress who launched her career with roles in iconic ’90s movies—instantly became the insightful, outspoken actress that Hollywood has been desperately awaiting. With honesty and heartbreaking wisdom, she revealed her own trauma as a victim of sexual assault: "It is for you that I am speaking. This is real. We are real." In this moving collection of thought provoking essays infused with her unique wisdom and deep humor, Union uses that same fearlessness to tell astonishingly personal and true stories about power, color, gender, feminism, and fame. Union tackles a range of experiences, including bullying, beauty standards, and competition between women in Hollywood, growing up in white California suburbia and then spending summers with her black relatives in Nebraska, coping with crushes, puberty, and the divorce of her parents. Genuine and perceptive, Union bravely lays herself bare, uncovering a complex and courageous life of self-doubt and self-discovery with incredible poise and brutal honesty. Throughout, she compels us to be ethical and empathetic, and reminds us of the importance of confidence, self-awareness, and the power of sharing truth, laughter, and support.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peregrinate: To travel or wander around from place to place. The land of the United States is defined by vast distances encouraging human movement and migration on a grand scale. Consequently, American stories are filled with descriptions of human bodies walking through the land. In Peregrinations, Amy T. Hamilton examines stories told by and about Indigenous American, Euroamerican, and Mexican walkers. Walking as a central experience that ties these texts together—never simply a metaphor or allegory—offers storytellers and authors an elastic figure through which to engage diverse cultural practices and beliefs including Puritan and Catholic teachings, Diné and Anishinaabe oral traditions, Chicanx histories, and European literary traditions. Hamilton argues that walking bodies alert readers to the ways the physical world—more-than-human animals, trees, rocks, wind, sunlight, and human bodies—has a hand in creating experience and meaning. Through material ecocriticism, a reading practice attentive to historical and ongoing oppressions, exclusions, and displacements, she reveals complex layerings of narrative and materiality in stories of walking human bodies. This powerful and pioneering methodology for understanding place and identity, clarifies the wide variety of American stories about human relationships with the land and the ethical implications of the embeddedness of humans in the more-than-human world.

Book excerpt: Not since student turmoil and unrest wreaked havoc on the nation's campuses three decades ago has American higher education been the subject of so much controversy and popular criticism. Countless indictments compete for the public's attention as critics explore vital issues confronting today's institutions of higher learning: curricular fragmentation, declining academic standards, the apparent erosion of liberal learning within academe, widespread neglect of undergraduate education in favour of academic research and unprecedented financial woes. Confusion over fundamental priorities and purposes, the author argues, lies at the heart of the dilemma facing end-of-the-century higher education. Thoughtful and timely, Crisis in the Academy offers a wide-ranging analysis of contemporary higher education while making an important contribution to the ongoing public debate over the future of America's beleaguered and diverse institutions of higher learning.

Book excerpt: "On a raw February morning in 1977, Indianapolis police radio frequencies crackle with the first acts of what was to become a bizarre and frightening, three-day-long psychodrama. A man named Tony Kiritsis had wired a shotgun to the back of Richard Hall's head. In a type of manic march, Kiritsis nudged a shoved Hall from his downtown Indianapolis office over piles of snow on midtown streets. Kiritsis was belligerent. hall's throat was bound and it appeared as through the harness device strapped to the shotgun might choke him. Kirtisis fingered the trigger with his right hand as he held the barrel in his left, prodding Hall. It was cold. Both men were in shirtsleeves. Citizens and police were simply stunned by what they saw. The cursing and screaming Kirtisis commandeered a police car and sped off to the west. Something was about to change in American media coverage, and forever in the life of Richard Hall. For three days his angry, ranting captor threatened to kill him as radio, television, wire service and newspaper reporters covered every turn of event. We have waited for decades to hear more of the story Richard Hall now shares his singular experience of being the victim of an historic act of terror that seized the world's attention and ushered the media into an unpredictable new world"--Back cover.

Book excerpt: Game theory is central to understanding human behavior and relevant to all of the behavioral sciences—from biology and economics, to anthropology and political science. However, as The Bounds of Reason demonstrates, game theory alone cannot fully explain human behavior and should instead complement other key concepts championed by the behavioral disciplines. Herbert Gintis shows that just as game theory without broader social theory is merely technical bravado, so social theory without game theory is a handicapped enterprise. This edition has been thoroughly revised and updated. Reinvigorating game theory, The Bounds of Reason offers innovative thinking for the behavioral sciences.

There are four main characters: Frau Grete Sommer, a beautiful single lady in her forties; Walter, a young Mormon missionary; Zsolt and Csaba, refugees from Hungary. The middle-aged lady and the soldier of God fall in love, but their cloudless happiness doesn't last long. Zsolt was twelve years old when he lost his parents. He grew up in a state orphanage until he could escape from communist Hungary five years later. In Vienna, he finds a roommate, who becomes his father, brother and best friend in one person. The caprice of fate brought together these four characters. Their story tells about love, care, joy and pain. As I put this bouquet of human feelings onto paper, sometimes I used poetry to make my readers inhale the fragrance of it. I hope, even if the plot of my novel fades away in their minds some day, the feelings they feel as they read it will remain with them in their hearts and brains forever, like the sweet scent of violets.

Alex Morrow is not new to the police force -- or to crime -- but there is nothing familiar about the call she has just received. On a still night in a quiet suburb of Glasgow, Scotland, three armed men have slipped from a van into a house, demanding a man who is not, and has never been, inside the front door. In the confusion that ensues, one family member is shot and another kidnapped, the assailants demanding an impossible ransom. Is this the amateur crime gone horribly wrong that it seems, or something much more unexpected?
