Book excerpt: Represents a self-contained account of a new promising and generally applicable approach to a large class of one-sided testing problems, where the alternative is restricted by at least two linear inequalities. It highlights the geometrical structure of these problems. It gives guidance in the construction of a so-called Circular Likelihood Ratio (CLR) test, which is obtained if the linear inequalities, or polyhedral cone, are replaced by one suitable angular inequality, or circular cone. Such a test will often constitute a nice and easy-to-use compromise between the LR-test and a suitable linear test against the original alternative. The book treats both theory and practice of CLR-tests. For cases with up to 13 linear inequalities, it evaluates the power of CLR-tests, derives the most stringent CLR-test, and provides tables of critical values. It is of interest both to the specialist in order- restricted inference and to the statistical consultant in need of simple and powerful one-sided tests. Many examples are worked out for ANOVA, goodness-of-fit, and contingency table problems. Case studies are devoted to Mokken's one- dimensional scaling model, one-sided treatment comparison in a two-period crossover trial, and some real data ANOVA- layouts (biology and educational psychology).

Book excerpt: Sri Gopal Mohanty has made pioneering contributions to lattice path counting and its applications to probability and statistics. This is clearly evident from his lifetime publications list and the numerous citations his publications have received over the past three decades. My association with him began in 1982 when I came to McMaster Univer sity. Since then, I have been associated with him on many different issues at professional as well as cultural levels; I have benefited greatly from him on both these grounds. I have enjoyed very much being his colleague in the statistics group here at McMaster University and also as his friend. While I admire him for his honesty, sincerity and dedication, I appreciate very much his kindness, modesty and broad-mindedness. Aside from our common interest in mathematics and statistics, we both have great love for Indian classical music and dance. We have spent numerous many different subjects associated with the Indian music and hours discussing dance. I still remember fondly the long drive (to Amherst, Massachusetts) I had a few years ago with him and his wife, Shantimayee, and all the hearty discussions we had during that journey. Combinatorics and applications of combinatorial methods in probability and statistics has become a very active and fertile area of research in the recent past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An up-to-date approach to understanding statistical inference Statistical inference is finding useful applications in numerous fields, from sociology and econometrics to biostatistics. This volume enables professionals in these and related fields to master the concepts of statistical inference under inequality constraints and to apply the theory to problems in a variety of areas. Constrained Statistical Inference: Order, Inequality, and Shape Constraints provides a unified and up-to-date treatment of the methodology. It clearly illustrates concepts with practical examples from a variety of fields, focusing on sociology, econometrics, and biostatistics. The authors also discuss a broad range of other inequality-constrained inference problems that do not fit well in the contemplated unified framework, providing a meaningful way for readers to comprehend methodological resolutions. Chapter coverage includes: Population means and isotonic regression Inequality-constrained tests on normal means Tests in general parametric models Likelihood and alternatives Analysis of categorical data Inference on monotone density function, unimodal density function, shape constraints, and DMRL functions Bayesian perspectives, including Stein’s Paradox, shrinkage estimation, and decision theory

Book excerpt: This book presents up-to-date theory and methods of statistical hypothesis testing based on measure theory. The so-called statistical space is a measurable space adding a family of probability measures. Most topics in the book will be developed based on this term. The book includes some typical data sets, such as the relation between race and the death penalty verdict, the behavior of food intake of two kinds of Zucker rats, and the per capita income and expenditure in China during the 1978-2002 period. Emphasis is given to the process of finding appropriate statistical techniques and methods of evaluating these techniques.

It is especially conceived for graduate students and scientists who are interested in the applications of statistical methods to plasma physics. Thus it provides also concise information on experimental aspects of fusion-oriented plasma physics. In view of the first three basic chapters it can be fruitfully used by students majoring in probability theory and statistics. The first part deals with the mathematical foundation and framework of the subject. Some attention is given to the historical background. Exercises are added to help readers understand the underlying concepts. In the second part, two major case studies are presented which exemplify the areas of discriminant analysis and multivariate profile analysis, respectively. To introduce these case studies, an outline is provided of the context of magnetic plasma fusion research. In the third part an overview is given of statistical software; separate attention is devoted to SAS and S-PLUS. The final chapter presents several datasets and gives a description of their physical setting. Most of these datasets were assembled at the ASDEX Upgrade Tokamak. All of them are accompanied by exercises in form of guided (minor) case studies. The book concludes with translations of key concepts into several languages.
