Book excerpt: Asymptotic Methods in the Theory of Plates with MixedBoundary Conditions comprehensively covers the theoreticalbackground of asymptotic approaches and their use in solvingmechanical engineering-oriented problems of structural members, primarily plates (statics and dynamics) with mixed boundary conditions. The first part of this book introduces the theory and applicationof asymptotic methods and includes a series of approaches that havebeen omitted or not rigorously treated in the existing literature. These lesser known approaches include the method of summation andconstruction of the asymptotically equivalent functions, methods ofsmall and large delta, and the homotopy perturbations method. The second part of the book contains original results devoted tothe solution of the mixed problems of the theory of plates, including statics, dynamics and stability of the studied objects. In addition, the applicability of the approaches presented to otherrelated linear or nonlinear problems is addressed. Key features: • Includes analytical solving of mixed boundary valueproblems • Introduces modern asymptotic and summationprocedures • Presents asymptotic approaches for nonlinear dynamics ofrods, beams and plates • Covers statics, dynamics and stability of plates withmixed boundary conditions • Explains links between the Adomian and homotopyperturbation approaches Asymptotic Methods in the Theory of Plates with MixedBoundary Conditions is a comprehensive reference forresearchers and practitioners working in the field of Mechanics ofSolids and Mechanical Engineering, and is also a valuable resourcefor graduate and postgraduate students from Civil and MechanicalEngineering.

Book excerpt: Asymptotic methods are of great importance for practical applications, especially in dealing with boundary value problems for small stochastic perturbations. This book deals with nonlinear dynamical systems perturbed by noise. It addresses problems in which noise leads to qualitative changes, escape from the attraction domain, or extinction in population dynamics. The most likely exit point and expected escape time are determined with singular perturbation methods for the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation. The authors indicate how their techniques relate to the Itô calculus applied to the Langevin equation. The book will be useful to researchers and graduate students.

Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to recent advances in nonlinear dynamics of continuous elastic systems. A major part of the book is dedicated to the analysis of non-homogeneous continua, e.g. plates and shells characterized by sudden changes in their thickness, possessing holes in their bodies or/and edges, made from different materials with diverse dynamical characteristics and complicated boundary conditions. New theoretical and numerical approaches for analyzing the dynamics of such continua are presented, such as the method of added masses and the method of proper orthogonal decomposition. The presented hybrid approach leads to results that cannot be obtained by other standard theories in the field. The demonstrated methods are illustrated by numerous examples of application.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many dynamical systems are described by differential equations that can be separated into one part, containing linear terms with constant coefficients, and a second part, relatively small compared with the first, containing nonlinear terms. Such a system is said to be weakly nonlinear. The small terms rendering the system nonlinear are referred to as perturbations. A weakly nonlinear system is called quasi-linear and is governed by quasi-linear differential equations. We will be interested in systems that reduce to harmonic oscillators in the absence of perturbations. This book is devoted primarily to applied asymptotic methods in nonlinear oscillations which are associated with the names of N. M. Krylov, N. N. Bogoli ubov and Yu. A. Mitropolskii. The advantages of the present methods are their simplicity, especially for computing higher approximations, and their applicability to a large class of quasi-linear problems. In this book, we confine ourselves basi cally to the scheme proposed by Krylov, Bogoliubov as stated in the monographs [6,211. We use these methods, and also develop and improve them for solving new problems and new classes of nonlinear differential equations. Although these methods have many applications in Mechanics, Physics and Technique, we will illustrate them only with examples which clearly show their strength and which are themselves of great interest. A certain amount of more advanced material has also been included, making the book suitable for a senior elective or a beginning graduate course on nonlinear oscillations.

Book excerpt: Asymptotic Methods in Resonance Analytical Dynamics presents new asymptotic methods for the analysis and construction of solutions (mainly periodic and quasiperiodic) of differential equations with small parameters. Along with some background material and theory behind these methods, the authors also consider a variety of problems and applications in nonlinear mechanics and oscillation theory. The methods examined are based on two types: the generalized averaging technique of Krylov-Bogolubov and the numeric-analytical iterations of Lyapunov-Poincaré. This text provides a useful source of reference for postgraduates and researchers working in this area of applied mathematics.

Book excerpt: This book presents and extend different known methods to solve different types of strong nonlinearities encountered by engineering systems. A better knowledge of the classical methods presented in the first part lead to a better choice of the so-called “base functions”. These are absolutely necessary to obtain the auxiliary functions involved in the optimal approaches which are presented in the second part. Every chapter introduces a distinct approximate method applicable to nonlinear dynamical systems. Each approximate analytical approach is accompanied by representative examples related to nonlinear dynamical systems from to various fields of engineering.

This book was released on 2014-01-23 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a hybrid approach to the mechanics of thin bodies. Classical theories of rods, plates and shells with constrained shear are based on asymptotic splitting of the equations and boundary conditions of three-dimensional elasticity. The asymptotic solutions become accurate as the thickness decreases, and the three-dimensional fields of stresses and displacements can be determined. The analysis includes practically important effects of electromechanical coupling and material inhomogeneity. The extension to the geometrically nonlinear range uses the direct approach based on the principle of virtual work. Vibrations and buckling of pre-stressed structures are studied with the help of linearized incremental formulations, and direct tensor calculus rounds out the list of analytical techniques used throughout the book. A novel theory of thin-walled rods of open profile is subsequently developed from the models of rods and shells, and traditionally applied equations are proven to be asymptotically exact. The influence of pre-stresses on the torsional stiffness is shown to be crucial for buckling analysis. Novel finite element schemes for classical rod and shell structures are presented with a comprehensive discussion regarding the theoretical basis, computational aspects and implementation details. Analytical conclusions and closed-form solutions of particular problems are validated against numerical results. The majority of the simulations were performed in the Wolfram Mathematica environment, and the compact source code is provided as a substantial and integral part of the book.
