Book excerpt: All his life, Dr. Peter Northcott has been plagued by disturbing dreamsapocalyptic scenes of angels and demons and visions of fire and blood. Concentrating on his scholarly life in Rome, Peter is approaching his thirty-third birthday when he is accosted by a mysterious priest. Father Renauld claims to have important information regarding Peters destiny. He spins a tale of secret societies and ancient texts and enemies who not only threaten Peter himself but the whole of creation. Peter retreats to his adopted parents home in England. Even there, he is haunted by dreams of Armageddon. His parents beg him to listen to the priests story. Can these intelligent people really believe in a war of cosmic proportions? What was the true motivation behind Peters adoption? Reluctantly, Peter visits a subterranean cavern, situated deep in the bowels of the Pyrenees Mountains, to retrieve an ancient scroll. Records of fire, murder, and secrets echo Peters visions, but can he really be the divine star, the savior of the world? The idea is unthinkable, but what if it is true? What if he is the Astrum Divinus?

Book Synopsis The Etymologies of Isidore of Seville by :
Download or read book The Etymologies of Isidore of Seville written by and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-06-08 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a complete English translation of the Latin Etymologies of Isidore, Bishop of Seville (c.560–636). Isidore compiled the work between c.615 and the early 630s and it takes the form of an encyclopedia, arranged by subject matter. It contains much lore of the late classical world beginning with the Seven Liberal Arts, including Rhetoric, and touches on thousands of topics ranging from the names of God, the terminology of the Law, the technologies of fabrics, ships and agriculture to the names of cities and rivers, the theatrical arts, and cooking utensils. Isidore provides etymologies for most of the terms he explains, finding in the causes of words the underlying key to their meaning. This book offers a highly readable translation of the twenty books of the Etymologies, one of the most widely known texts for a thousand years from Isidore's time.
Book Synopsis Teachers, Students, and Schools of Greek in the Renaissance by : Federica Ciccolella
Download or read book Teachers, Students, and Schools of Greek in the Renaissance written by Federica Ciccolella and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beginning of the Greek revival in the West is generally attributed to the teaching of the Byzantine scholar Manuel Chrysoloras in Florence between 1397 and 1400. Causes, aspects, and consequences of this important cultural phenomenon still need to be analyzed in depth. The essays collected in this volume examine the development of the study of Greek from the fifteenth to the early sixteenth century, reconstructing its spread and impact on early modern literatures, philosophy, and visual arts. An analysis of the methods and tools used to teach and learn Greek sheds light on the complex cultural relationships between Byzantium and the West and enlarges the traditional picture of the Greek revival in early modern Europe. Contributors are: Lilia Campana, Federica Ciccolella, Mariarosa Cortesi, Francesco G. Giannachi, Fevronia Nousia, Kalle Lundahl, Erika Nuti, Denis Robichaud, Antonio Rollo, Luigi Silvano, David Speranzi, and Paola Tomé.

Book Synopsis De Sphaera of Johannes de Sacrobosco in the Early Modern Period by : Matteo Valleriani
Download or read book De Sphaera of Johannes de Sacrobosco in the Early Modern Period written by Matteo Valleriani and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book explores commentaries on an influential text of pre-Copernican astronomy in Europe. It features essays that take a close look at key intellectuals and how they engaged with the main ideas of this qualitative introduction to geocentric cosmology. Johannes de Sacrobosco compiled his Tractatus de sphaera during the thirteenth century in the frame of his teaching activities at the then recently founded University of Paris. It soon became a mandatory text all over Europe. As a result, a tradition of commentaries to the text was soon established and flourished until the second half of the 17th century. Here, readers will find an informative overview of these commentaries complete with a rich context. The essays explore the educational and social backgrounds of the writers. They also detail how their careers developed after the publication of their commentaries, the institutions and patrons they were affiliated with, what their agenda was, and whether and how they actually accomplished it. The editor of this collection considers these scientific commentaries as genuine scientific works. The contributors investigate them here not only in reference to the work on which it comments but also, and especially, as independent scientific contributions that are socially, institutionally, and intellectually contextualized around their authors.
