Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Association of Plant Hairs and Insect Resistance: An Annotated Bibliography In general, the bibliography includes publications that appeared after Painter's (1951) book. However, a few that appeared before 1951 and that were not discussed by Painter are listed in this bibliography. In addition, those publications listed only by title at the end of Painter's book, are in cluded herein. Painter's book is the second entry; it is categorized as Gen eral. Other publications are listed alphabetically under the plant in the study. The annotations do not necessarily reflect the main point of the article cited in the publication, but they do reflect the information about plant pubescence contained in each. Reports concerning the genetics of plant pubescence were not included unless both insect resistance and plant pubescence were dis cussed; however, many of the publications are concerned with the inheritance of plant hairs. Because plant pubescence is associated with resistance and susceptibility to insects in at least 18 genera, the list will be Of value to scientists working in host-plant resistance and in teaching. Book Synopsis Techniques for Evaluating Insect Resistance in Crop Plants by : Charles M. Smith
Download or read book Techniques for Evaluating Insect Resistance in Crop Plants written by Charles M. Smith and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-12-17 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book is the first illustrated volume to provide detailed discussions of all plant genera regarding techniques developed to evaluate plant resistance to insects. Many of the book's references have never before appeared in a volume on this subject. The authors systematically discuss techniques used to evaluate different types of insect behavior and plant morphological and phytochemical factors responsible for plant resistance and susceptibility to insects.

Download or read book Global Plant Genetic Resources for Insect-Resistant Crops written by Stephen L. Clement and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An excellent reference book for plant breeders and entomologists, Global Plant Genetic Resources for Insect-Resistant Crops combines germplasm preservation with use in insect-resistant crop development and basic research. The contributions of the authors represent the efforts, cooperation, and understanding of world leaders in the conservation and use of global plant genetic resources for sustainable agricultural production. Concepts addressed include dependency of modern agriculture on chemical pest control and applications of biotechnology in use of natural plant genes for insect-resistant crops. Book Synopsis Commentaries in Plant Science by : Harry Smith
Download or read book Commentaries in Plant Science written by Harry Smith and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commentaries in Plant Science, Volume 2 is a collection of papers that reviews developments in the pure and applied science of plants. One paper discusses the role of supercooling in the winter survival mechanism of and ecological distribution of many plant communities. Another paper evaluates the Cholodny-Went theory of shoot geotropism that there is strong evidence in auxin redistribution occurring in a rapid manner to cause geotropic curvature. The magnitude of auxin redistribution is too rare to cause differential growth. Some insect pests have specific nutritional requirements and well-developed mechanisms for selecting their plant host. One paper enumerates the benefits of using insect-resistant host plant varieties, such as the non-incurrence of extra costs, these are environmentally safe, and are compatible with most other methods of pest control. Another paper discusses the nature and possible genetic manipulation of a complex bacteria, the actinomycetes, as well as its role as antibiotic producer. Another paper examines the nature of seed storage proteins and of the cellular processes that are related in their synthesis and deposition especially in cereals and legume. This collection is suitable for botanists, genecologists, taxonomists, biologists, and investigators whose works involve cell membrane research.
Book Synopsis Induced Responses to Herbivory by : Richard Karban
Download or read book Induced Responses to Herbivory written by Richard Karban and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants face a daunting array of creatures that eat them, bore into them, and otherwise use virtually every plant part for food, shelter, or both. But although plants cannot flee from their attackers, they are far from defenseless. In addition to adaptations like thorns, which may be produced in response to attack, plants actively alter their chemistry and physiology in response to damage. For instance, young potato plant leaves being eaten by potato beetles respond by producing chemicals that inhibit beetle digestive enzymes. Over the past fifteen years, research on these induced responses to herbivory has flourished, and here Richard Karban and Ian T. Baldwin present the first comprehensive evaluation and synthesis of this rapidly developing field. They provide state-of-the-discipline reviews and highlight areas where new research will be most productive. Their comprehensive overview will be welcomed by a wide variety of theoretical and applied researchers in ecology, evolutionary biology, plant biology, entomology, and agriculture.
