De 1990 a 1997, une base de donnees d'humidite de surface representative du bassin versant de l'orgeval est constituee. On montre qu'a l'echelle d'un petit bassin agricole, un indice relie a l'etat hydrique superficiel du sol peut etre defini a partir de donnees de teledetection radar ers/sar. L'estimation de l'humidite moyenne du sol est effectuee en selectionnant des types d'occupation du sol sur lesquels il est possible de corriger le signal des effets de vegetation et de negliger, en mesures relatives, les effets de rugosite pour acceder a un signal dependant de l'etat hydrique des surfaces retrodiffusantes. Le modele hydrologique grhum utilise dans cette etude fournit des simulations de debit en bon accord avec les observations. Par contre, le calage du modele sur des mesures de debit de 1991 a 1994 ne conduit pas a des humidites simulees physiques. On montre que la mesure d'humidite est reliee a plusieurs variables d'etat du modele. Deux approches sont alors envisagees afin d'assimiler les observations d'humidite. La premiere se fonde sur une methode d'assimilation variationnelle des humidites et des debits. L'humidite globale mesuree est assimilee en utilisant des relations entre etats et permet de restituer le modele dans de meilleures conditions previsionnelles. La deuxieme approche se fonde sur une assimilation sequentielle des humidites superficielles suivant le filtre de kalman et necessite une reformulation du modele afin d'obtenir des humidites simulees plus physiques. Les derives du modele sont alors corrigees au cours du temps en ajustant les humidites simulees lorsqu'une mesure est disponible. Les ajustements, calcules en fonction des erreurs du modele et des mesures, conduisent a une augmentation des performances du modele en simulation de crues.

Sa prise en compte dans la modélisation de la relation pluie-débit a déjà été abordée à partir de mesures ponctuelles in situ. Elle est à repenser dans l'optique de l'utilisation de données issues de nouvelles techniques de télédétection offrant des perspectives intéressantes pour le suivi spatio-temporel de cette variable a l'échelle de régions entières. L'objectif poursuivi est de mettre au point un modèle hydrologique conceptuel capable de simuler à la fois des débits journaliers et l'état hydrique du sol d'un bassin versant dans un but ultime d'amélioration de la prévision des ressources en eau superficielle grâce à l'observation spatiale. Le modèle hydrologique a été construit à partir d'un couplage entre le modèle conceptuel GR3J, simulant des débits, et le modèle physique bi-couches inspiré du schéma de Deardorff, simulant l'évolution de l'humidité des couches de sol superficielle et globale. Le couplage de ces deux modèles a été réalisé en testant 72 procédures rassemblées en trois grands groupes se distinguant par la gestion de la pluie. En l'absence de données suffisantes d'humidité du sol obtenues par télédétection, ces différentes versions ont été testées sur le bassin expérimental et représentatif de l'Orgeval disposant de longues chroniques d'état hydrique du sol mesure in situ. Le modèle couple retenu Grhum a été valide à la fois sur l'Orgeval et sur 36 bassins versants situes en Bretagne, cadre du projet de télédétection Ers-1. Les résultats obtenus sur l'Orgeval montrent que le modèle Grhum simule les débits et les humidités de la couche globale de manière satisfaisante et que les humidités de la couche de surface sont mieux reproduites en tenant compte de l'occupation du sol. Sur les bassins bretons, en l'absence de données d'humidité du sol, seule la bonne qualité globale de la simulation des débits a pu être vérifiée. Ce modèle peut fonctionner selon deux modes: simulation lorsque les données d'humidité du sol ne sont pas disponibles et assimilation lorsqu'elles le sont. Ce dernier mode de fonctionnement, encore à perfectionner, permettra de tirer parti de l'information spatiale sur l'état hydrique du sol
