Chatwin and published by British Columbia, Ministry of Forests Research Program. This book was released on 2001 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small fish-bearing streams that are classified into class S4 under the British Columbia Forest Practices Code are not required to have a riparian reserve zone immediately adjacent to both sides of the stream, but are required to have an outer riparian management zone. This report describes a survey that assessed the condition of S4 streams in interior British Columbia to determine the effects of riparian forest harvest practices implemented under the Code. The purpose of the survey was to determine: the frequency of implementation of different types of streamside harvesting practices; whether those different practices meet the objectives of the Riparian Management Area Guidebook; and whether those practices result in apparent impacts to fish habitat. The survey investigated the extent of forest harvesting potentially affecting S4 streams, the prevalent riparian silvicultural treatments & levels of tree retention, the evidence for post-harvest stream channel disturbance, and the extent of windthrow & windthrow-related impacts to the stream. Results are presented & discussed for a review of 2,989 cutblocks harvested between 1997 & 1998 in six forest districts in the central interior plateau.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Columbia Forest Practices Code specifies planning and operational guidelines for each phase of timber harvesting operations around streams, lakes, and wetlands. This guide describes suitable practices to meet the objectives of the riparian management regulations within the Code, specifically the requirement to correctly identify streams on the basis of fish presence in order to ensure the protection of fish populations and habitats during all phases of forest harvesting. The guide defines the classes of streams distinguished for aquatic ecosystem and riparian zone management, identifies fish species that define a stream as fish-bearing under the Code, and describes factors influencing fish-stream identification such as stream reach, gradient, stream size, natural barriers, and fisheries sensitive zones. The guide concludes with methods for identifying fish streams, including measurement, sampling, data recording, and mapping procedures.

Book excerpt: This report describes & presents results of an audit of intact & deactivated crossings on fish-bearing streams in the Port McNeill and Prince George forest districts in British Columbia. At each crossing, impacts to fish habitat were recorded, including loss of stream habitat due to encroachment, loss of benthic habitat due to sediment inundation or non-embedded pipes, loss of riparian habitat due to the crossing structure or road, and loss of upstream habitat due to a crossing impassable by fish. The audit was conducted to determine whether no net loss of fish habitat is being achieved by the forest sector when applying the Forest Practices Code of British Columbia Act regulatory standards to intact & deactivated forest road crossings of fish-bearing streams. Based on the results, recommendations are made to improve protection of fish habitat.

Book excerpt: Forests cover approximately 26% of the world's land surface area and represent a distinct biotic community. They interact with water and soil in a variety of ways, providing canopy surfaces which trap precipitation and allow evaporation back into the atmosphere, thus regulating how much water reaches the forest floor as through fall, as well as pull water from the soil for transpiration. The discipline "forest hydrology" has been developed throughout the 20th century. During that time human intervention in natural landscapes has increased, and land use and management practices have intensified. The book will be useful for graduate students, professionals, land managers, practitioners, and researchers with a good understanding of the basic principles of hydrology and hydrologic processes.

The summary is based on literature reviews, case histories, and interviews. Information for the literature review was obtained primarily from scientific journals, and includes reviews and original studies. The disease-causing organisms Giardia lamblia (causing giardiasis) and Cryptosporidium parvum (causing cryptosporidiosis) are emphasized because of their importance in British Columbia.

Book excerpt: Residents in the East Blackpool area near Clearwater, British Columbia, were concerned that forestry activities above their properties would affect their domestic water supply. This report presents an investigation of various assertions made about those activities and their effects on water quality. Findings are presented & discussed regarding: whether the forest licensee (Weyerhaeuser) was legally required to act as though the area was a community watershed; whether the harvested area was too large for a community watershed; the development of cutblocks on potentially unstable terrain; opportunities for public review & comment on the licensee's forest development plan; the planned location of an access road; and compliance with Forest Practices Code requirements related to riparian management, green-up, and cutblock size.
